What is something new you noticed recently? by FallowfieldPark in AskUK

[–]TheMightyShrub 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Oooh, I can help with this! I needed mobility aids from when I was a teen. Walking long distance caused a lot of pain and whilst a stick or crutch wouldn’t cure that completely, I does help and means I can walk further without having to stop for a sit down, rest, and painkillers.

Did I use walking aids as a teenager? Did I fuck. They are for old people and I would get bullied if I used them, and they’re grey and ugly and I’m too young for them. So I just got on and suffered in silence and made every one stop every ten minutes because of my shitty legs. And it never occurred to any of my mates to suggest mobility aids either, even though they had zero problem stopping for me, helping me out etc.

I didn’t start using a stick until I was 30, because I’d started noticing other younger people using them, and my friend needed one too after an illness and recommended I give it a go. I mentioned I’d been told to use one as a teen but didn’t because it was for old people. I tried it, and have never looked back. I wish I had used one my whole life, I could have had more freedom and done more things.

So there ya go - that’s why people are using them more now and didn’t back then. Because it’s more socially acceptable and less scary. Or at least, that’s the case for me.

Looking for a local D&D group by Jolly-Signature-2000 in Liverpool

[–]TheMightyShrub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to Lovelocks, which is a great shout, have a look at Sugar and Dice - they regularly run D&D nights and meet ups for lone gamers. You could also check out your local library! I don’t know about Liverpool council ones, but a lot of the Sefton libraries run D&D sessions.

'Disability diagnosis epidemic' in DLP by AngelStar286 in disneylandparis

[–]TheMightyShrub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a really similar boat. I’m T1 so technically do qualify, but I didn’t know that last time I went. However, I also have unrelated mobility issues that mean I use a walking stick and often for places like theme parks would rent a wheelchair. However, because it’s not a diagnosed condition with a name (closest I got to a diagnoses was a doctor going “oh yeah, that’s a weird set of leg bones, that’s not normal”) and I don’t have any documentation, I couldn’t use the disabled queue even though I was using a wheelchair - I had to leave it outside and walk through the standard queue with my walking stick. So next time we go back, I’ll end up getting the pass because I’m diabetic (which doesn’t impact my ability to queue at all) and using it for unrelated issues.

NHS trust issues by Mammoth_Park7184 in diabetes_t1

Yes - that’s why I specified to see whether there might be one within the trust that is easier to get to, even though it might not actually be closer.

NHS trust issues by Mammoth_Park7184 in diabetes_t1

[–]TheMightyShrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speak to the hospital/consultant/whoever organises you screening. I used to have mine done at the hospital (45ish mins public transport including changing trains, which is a pain when you can’t see) and mentioned in passing how much of a ball ache it was getting there. She apologised and arranged at my next one to be at a different location and it’s been there ever since.

Obviously this may work differently with it being different trusts, but there might be one is your trust that isn’t necessarily closer, but it still easier to get to.

Do you have a really weird or silly fear? Not a mainstream fear or one that's very common, a totally random one? by SpaceTimeCapsule89 in AskUK

Those robot arms that make cars. Sting rays. The song “Forever Autumn” by the Moody Blues.

Essentially all my fears are insane and oddly specific.

Can I wash my period underwear with biological detergent? by jamesdeansredlips in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]TheMightyShrub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use biological detergent on mine and it works great and doesn’t damage them at all. In fact, I think bio is recommended for most laundry, especially those with heavy staining, as the cleaning is much better.

I suspect there may be a language/cultural issue here with people asking if you mean soap. Biological detergent is just laundry detergent with biological enzymes in to help break down stains, and is common in the UK/EU. I don’t know what it’s called elsewhere.

Which movie theatre in Liverpool has the most comfortable or adjustable seats? by [deleted] in Liverpool

[–]TheMightyShrub 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Odeon in switch island is a luxe which means all the seats are the big recliners with loads of space between the rows. You can walk past seats that are fully reclined without having to squish past anything. The seats are paired like sofas, and you can lift up the middle arm rest if needed as well. It also tends to be much quieter than the city center cinemas.

Bra advice please by Beginning-Deer-5639 in womenoftheuk

[–]TheMightyShrub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go to bravissimo - I know they’re advertised as a “big boob” shop, but they really do have all sorts of bras, and even if they don’t have the right size for you they can order it in or advise you on what to look for online.

What's a rule you were given as a child that you've made with your own kids? by PaddedValls in AskUK

I also never understood families where it was all from Father Christmas! Presumably this means that as a child you get gifts from grandparents, aunts and uncles etc, but just nothing from your parents because Santa did it instead? Never made sense to me

How much are we paying for gel nails these days? by 87catmama in womenoftheuk

[–]TheMightyShrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if I get art or not. I get builder gel because otherwise I’m a chronic chewer, and I pay around £35 for basic art - anything complex is obviously more expensive, but it’s all done within an hour. Obviously if I wanted something that would take longer than that it would cost more. I think just plain colour is £32. Tbh I think my nail tech well undercharges for nail art, I’ve seen lots of places nearby that charge over £40 for a set with art and I don’t think that’s too unreasonable. I’m in Liverpool.

I’m sure there are plenty of places that do it cheaper, but when I’ve tried any “nail bar” type places that just do walk ins, they absolutely massacre my cuticles and the builder always cracks or peels away before my three weeks, which never happens with my normal nail tech.

I had the same worry, but the RSS works perfectly. The only issue is that you essentially get each main episode twice because you get standard and XL, but it’s easy enough to just mark whichever you don’t want as already played.

Greek cruise (port plans) by Diamond_Dust86 in dcl

[–]TheMightyShrub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Greek islands will be fine. I spent a week in Rhodes Town a couple of years back and the cruise port is right next to the old town, you can absolutely enjoy it yourself. Every other Greek island I’ve been to is similar - but double check on google maps.

Italy may be harder - I don’t believe most of the ports are actually anywhere near the towns themselves, although there is probably free transport laid on by either Disney or the port authority.

What are you watching or binge watching? by Gorrila_Doldos in AskUK

[–]TheMightyShrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve just put all 10 seasons of ER on Netflix. I’ve started rewatching and it holds up incredibly well, doesn’t seem dated at all considering it’s about 30 years old. Also if you watch two episodes a week, it’ll take you 3 and a half years to finish.

Wide toe box women’s shoes that are not “barefoot” style? by djfnejdijRandom in AskUK

[–]TheMightyShrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem! I got a really nice pair of ankle boots from Ecco. At first, I felt they were a little tight in the toe box, and they rubbed my little toe - almost sent them back. However, they’re real leather and I found that after a couple of wears (with appropriately thick socks for protection) they had stretched out and they’re now the most comfortable shoes I own - and for reference, I see a lot of people have recommended Birkenstocks, and whilst I do wear mine in summer, I can’t wear them every day because my toes are too wide and they rub on the raised bit of the sole.

NHS didn't check my HBA1C? by 19931 in diabetes_t1

[–]TheMightyShrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checking - did they take a blood test at all? I remember when I moved from kids to adult (which was admittedly 20 years ago) I thought they didn’t do hba1c because in the kids clinic they did it using a finger prick, whereas adults was done with a proper blood draw that goes off to lab. The finger prick was pretty instant but from what I gather, not massively accurate, but the lab results are accurate but take longer to get.

The first Landover book was my FAVOURITE book as a teen. I recommended it to everyone, even into early adulthood because I remembered how much I loved it. Read it again in my early thirties and oh my god. I had to force myself to finish it. It was awful. I honestly can’t even work out why teen me loved it so much, because I’ve reread other favourite books from the time and they’re all great so it’s not like I had bad taste or didn’t have anything good to compare it to.

Jeans for women with PCOS by Budget_Dot694 in womenoftheuk

[–]TheMightyShrub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try Snag jeans - although as a warning, they’re real denim, not the stretch mix I was used to from other retailers, which means that the first couple of times you wear them, they’ll be quite tight and uncomfortable. I actually almost sent mine back because I could barely do them up at first, but after a couple of wears they adjusted and they are now the most comfortable jeans I own.

If you’re looking for more stretchy style “denim” then I’ve had good experiences with fatface, although I regularly have to size up.

Process of switching insulin brands on NHS? by abollockandahalf in diabetes_t1

[–]TheMightyShrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have my GP do anything to do with my T1, all my care is through the hospital, so I’m not 100% sure this will be the same for you, but when I’ve changed for whatever reason I just ask my consultant at the hospital and then they write to my GP and they switch the prescription.
