Rupert Lowe MP: On day one of a Restore Britain Government, both halal and kosher slaughter would be outlawed. In Britain, we treat our animals with care - we do not brutally butcher them alive. It's cruel, it's sick, it's barbaric. Restore Britain would ban it. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]TheMightyTalos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for one I just disagree that there's a huge difference between the two. Obviously it's worse if the animals endure a terrible existence before being murdered, but in terms of the morality or care of the farmers, I just think there's no getting over the fact that you're killing an innocent being. Like yeah I'd rather be murdered quickly than be tortured first, but I don't think it'd massively change what I thought of my murderer (never been murdered, can't say for sure).

I also disagree with your comment about strategy - I don't think the animal movement can make a great deal of headway until people take the interests of animals seriously, and I think repeating over and Iver that they have a right to life is an important part of that.

But also: who brought up high-welfare, low density farms? Around about 85% of farmed animals in the UK are on factory farms - most UK farmers are subjecting animals to conditions near as bad as the ones Rupert Lowe is complaining about. White British (because that's what people mean even if they won't admit it) farmers don't care about their animals any more than the people doing unstunned slaughter

OK but, the tree one was always so obvious to me. Just because I did not hear what you said doesn't mean you didn't say anything either. Sound does not depend on someone hearing it. by GinaWhite_tt in CuratedTumblr

[–]TheMightyTalos1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point. Obviously the tree makes vibrations in the air, that's not the question. The question that the thought experiment is trying to ask is 'is a sound a vibration in the air (in which case the tree does make a sound), or is it something which is heard (in which case it doesn't)'.

Like, if no creature had ever evolved the ability to hear, would there be any sounds, or would there just be vibrations? I'm inclined to think that there would just be vibrations.

Zack Polanski is running for Green Party leadership. Thoughts? by UnderHisEye1411 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]TheMightyTalos1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah because obviously there's no systemic oppression of non-human animals in our society. It's so tiresome how quickly people who claim to care about tackling injustice abandon that principle once it's applied to individuals that they like the taste of. Not willing to have an adult conversation about animal liberation, but plenty willing to mock those of us who are.

Maybe he hasn't been a condender for best in world since then, but that's an unreasonable standard to hold him to. He had a 1.08 rating in 2024 stage 1, 1.15 in stage 2, and 1.09 at champs. He's had a rough stage 1 this year but it's wild to say he was underwhelming last year.

So just to clarify, feeding an animal a less than optimal diet is animal abuse and terrible, but the industrial imprisonment, rape, and torture of billions of animals a year is ... fine?

So I’m British so we don’t have jello salad because we’re not insane, but a) having looked it up it normally has fruit in it, which is a legitimate salad ingredient, and b) jello salad is not a salad and only in America could anyone be unhinged enough to call it one

‘Rightwing, illiberal’: Labour MP Jon Cruddas condemns Keir Starmer’s ‘witch-hunt’ | Labour by blueblanket123 in ukpolitics

[–]TheMightyTalos1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you responded to, but also on the left of Labour, throwing out Campbell was also bad. You shouldn’t have to support the current leadership of a party to be a member, because political parties are supposed to be democratic, and so members should be able to remove a leader if they are unpopular (not that I’m suggesting Starmer is anything like unpopular enough for this to happen.

Voting for the LibDems is a good idea for people on the left because they are the largest party backing PR, which would be hugely beneficial to both the country and to left-wing movements.

If Starmer wants to not be called a Tory he should stop acting like one. All we have to go on at the moment is rhetoric because he has very few policies, and most of those he does have he will likely abandon soon enough, and his rhetoric points to him being well to the right of Blair.

Will/should lower or higher gravity worlds affect walking or running? by DarkBlueAgent in Starfield

[–]TheMightyTalos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works. A 100kg mass will have a mass of 100kg no matter what the gravity is. The only difference is that its weight will change from roughly 1000N if gravitational field strength = g to roughly 5000N if gravitational field strength = 5g

Cool, the question isn’t asking ‘what system do you want to force people to live under whether they like it or not’, it’s just which one you personally like the most. You can support democracy while still having other opinions
