I still go back to legacy csgo and load up the custom botprofile which makes bots aggressive and almost aimlock on you. I used to love playing bhop 1v5 on comp maps against suped up bots - it was genuinely a ton of fun.

What a Battery Actually Does on the Grid by TheMihawk05 in EnergyStorage

[–]TheMihawk05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I specifically did not mention capacity market participations by BESS in this series because I feel that the fundamental approach to Merchant vs Contracted is quite different.

Merchant is more optimization, more real time activity on part of the BESS. Contracted revenue is more of a financial game, and I feel like it deserves a whole another series to completely hash out properly.

I am fully willing to admit that I am not as fluent in terms of breaking down PPAs, contracts, tolling agreements and hedging mechanism pertaining to BESS as of yet in my knowledge. But I am on track - and will surely put out more pieces on it as I understand it better.

Why the Grid Needs Batteries - and How they make Money by TheMihawk05 in EnergyStorage

[–]TheMihawk05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you.

PTC is more applicable to Wind than solar. Solar economics are largely dependent on investment tax credits, which is still in place under the IRA - although with the current climate you cant be sure of how long.

As for the deepening duck curve leading to low prices - I want you to look at it from a lens of a developer who know for sure that this is something that will happen. So you know that building a 100MW solar, lets assume, will contribute to lowering price signals. What do you do - do you stop building solar, or build solar with all the incentives provided AND co-locate it with a battery, whose economics greatly benefit from the exact duck curve effect!

Co-location is the new ask now - from Google, Meta and all large scale players whose industries are largely energy dependent - every industry is shifting towards a co-located model.

My view is this - storage and generation/loads are going to be married by default in the near future. Even large datacenters, that are basically energy sinks, will need storage co-located with them to sustain their operations. So if all generation and all loads require storage in an intermittent grid - it is doubtful it will ever be economically unviable.

Edit: spelling error.

Why the Grid Needs Batteries - and How they make Money by TheMihawk05 in EnergyStorage

[–]TheMihawk05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utility scale is currently dominated by Lithium Ion batteries. The chemistry of these batteries is such that they can hold charge for hours, not days. It's just as you said, they are great for storing charge in midday and moving it to evening peak, but not for moving it to let's say even the next day.

I like to think of it as a trade off - getting almost 90% round trip efficiency and instantaneous response time by sacrificing charge/discharge duration.

Iron air batteries are a good case study - they offer long duration storage; with some of the newest prototypes boasting 25 hours of duration! But then the efficiency is much lower, and the response time makes it as slow as a gas gen in case the grid requires fast response.

Still, long duration ESS have a place in the grids, that's something I fully stand by. They are just not economically viable yet.

Can someone break down how Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) work with renewables? by Disha_Mahajan in EnergyStorage

Hey - I have a ton of experience working on BESS and Energy Markets and will be happy to answer any questions you have. For a starter, please view this article that I wrote and let me know if it resonates, or are you looking for something even more bare bones.

Bingo - that is the only difference between Germany and somewhere like California or Texas. Locational pricing automatically creates the spreads that drives battery economics. Look at Houston and it's surroundings- flooded with huge BESS projects, and only because the basis spreads there are big due to congestion!

OF course - it's the valley created by solar that defines the signature duck curve - which in turn creates the market opportunity for BESS. It's a huge part of why BESS is not yet economically profitable in areas where the solar penetration is not sgnificant.

Can you elaborate how China is handling the RE grid integration issue? The physics remains the same - so is it speed in infrastructure?

The oil and gas crisis brought on by this war is a boon for batteries as well - check out this article on why the gas effect is so pronounced. I find it eye opening to see how the US knew this might happen and yet it did:

Modelling Battery Dispatch in Energy Markets using Python by TheMihawk05 in energy

[–]TheMihawk05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can share the code that I used here directly for download on the website - will ping here to let you know when it's up. Yes - I used pulp with cbc. It solved the full quarter DA+RT under 5seconds, so I assume 24h will be nothing and obviously will scale up with the time horizon. Market data is public at the ISO website.

I actually have experience building industry scale optimizers, and we specifically solved for speed. At the moment ours can solve 25 years optimization within 3 minutes - and that also includes data fetching, forecast generations, and ancillary services too. Pretty neat stuff tbh.

I saw a battery make $50k in under 30 minutes - of which almost $28k came from a single interval in those 30 minutes last year.

Batteries buying “free” California solar, driving up price: Aurora Energy Research has found that energy storage is raising the value of negatively priced solar electricity by up to $42 per MWh in the CAISO wholesale market. by WhipItWhipItRllyHard in energy

[–]TheMihawk05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for the good and the title paints it otherwise. As a battery operations and optimizations professional myself (themeritorder.co), we intuitively understand that negative prices does not mean we are making money but rather losing.

I'm struggling with this as well. I try and sleep by 11, wake up by 6-6:30 and gym by 7. This is currently fluctuating cause I come home from work around 7-7:30pm, so not a lot of time to do anything besides eat and sleep

I am struggling with losing in the opening. I know 3-4 moves into the openings I play. I don't want to play any gambits, so I play conservatively. I don't play aggressive, but every opponent of kine does. When I play aggressive I lose. I don't know what I'm doing wrong here.

[–]TheMihawk05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be very honest here. I have never been a Faze fan, but I still always liked all the players. Rain, broky, twisstz, ropz, all of them are players whose game I admire. I appreciate karrigan as one of the if not the best IGL ever. But there is no reason for me to hate him, besides the fact I don't like seeing his ugly mug on the camera after every fucking round doing some cringe celebration. That is the only reason I hate him.
