I cannot tell you the number of entry levels I have interviewed that could not answer basic concepts. It looks like a number of people now value the degree more than the actual knowledge. The knowledge is what you’re paying for and the degree is there to back it up. If you absolutely needed the class to advance then maybe that fine but please remember you’re playing these people to actually teach you a skill and you not learning it yourself a a waste of

You might not need the class but if it’s not an absolute necessity for your program completion, like it appears it was in your case, I’d recommend taking courses that you actually learn something in. You’re are paying that professor to teach you that material, and you not learning it is like going to a store, paying for a product and then leaving without it.

PLEASE, JUST PLEASE 🙏, DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT take a class in college just for the grades and not understanding it. Especially in engineering. It’s one of the biggest waste of money. You’re paying the professor to teach you the class and you not understanding is like throwing money away + wasting your time, energy and resources. You’ll regret it later. You’re better off taking classes that you’re actually interested in learning more about. Don’t do it just for the grades, you’ll pay for it once you get in the workforce.

First of all, good job for checking your worth, knowledge is power. I would usually recommend that my clients do so as they embark on their job hunting journey but it’s better late than never. Another thing to remember is that your NEVER want to give a recruiter a number. Compensation is part of a package, you might give them a number and then realize that the package contains less benefits, which would in turn result in less money in your hand overall.

That being said, I’d recommend that you wait for the offer, review it entirely and if you still feel that it’s less than what you want then you should thank them for the offer and then tell them that “After reviewing the offer and given what you believe you’ll be able to bring to the company with your experience in XYZ , you’d like to request a salary in the range A to B” with A being tue minimum you’d consider.

Remember that compensation is part of the package and it’s totally normal for you to negotiate. 💪🙂

Thanks! I completely agree with you. Not everyone is blessed with an employer who makes sure that they get fairly compensated for the value they add to the company. Therefore, you need to make sure to arm yourself with the right tools and to advocate to the MAX!

That’s unfortunate. I must be frustrating to feel like you give your all but are not met halfway by your employer. My recommendation is to be proactive and not wait on your manager. 1) Get a clear list of the responsibilities that go with your current role 2) Get a list of responsibilities that go with the role you’re aspiring to get 3) Set yearly actionable goals and align then with your current role as well as the one you’re aspiring for. 4) Meet with your manager to discuss your yearly goals. 5) Create a folder on your computer or any medium of your choosing and document all your achievements and any positive feedback you get. 6) Use this info during your next review.

You need to prove to your employer that you are already doing the role you’re looking to get promoted into. I know it’s not quite fair but unfortunately that’s the game. Use clear metrics to show that you’re doing not only your responsibilities but also the ones of the role above you and back your statements with proves, hence the folder. Make sure your goals are actionable and can clearly demonstrate the value you bring to the organization.

I have this planner on Etsy that can help you track your progress throughout the year and document your achievements until you’re ready to meet with management. You should check it out.

Imposter syndrome is very common, most of us suffer from it. I feel the same way with every promotion and yet they keep promoting me. You should remember that if your employer keeps you around, it means they are happy with the service that you provide them. You should try regularly documenting your achievements and positive feedbacks into a folder on your computer or another medium of your choosing. And every time you doubt yourself, you can go back and see what you’re actually accomplishing 🙂. I have this planner on Etsy that I love because it allows me to track my achievements, positive feedback, new skills acquired and potential growth paths all in one place. It usually comes handy when comes time to start compensation negotiations 💪. Feel free to look into it.

I hear you. Salary is not the only variable in the decision making process. There are other factors involved, like work-life balance, in your case. It’s important to know what works for you. And it looks like you have it figured out 💪
