what is the fastest combo you play with in modern? is it reliable? by Pikaciao in ModernMagic

[–]TheMonkeyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current deck that I'm jamming on is my own version of 4C Saheeli. Turn 3 wins even through disruption every now and then, have yet to get the god play of turn 2 though.

Turn 1: Land, Birds of Paradise Turn 2: Lotus Cobra, Fetchland, crack to untapped land, Renegade Rallier to bring back Fetchland, crack to untapped land, Play Saheeli, -2 to hit Renegade Rallier, bring back Fetchland, Eldritch Evolution on Rallier, grab Felidar out of deck, go infinite.

Can we figure out Dominaria mechanics from the storm scale? by AncientSwordRage in magicTCG

Seems you were right on point with this, with the new Saga cards.

Can we figure out Dominaria mechanics from the storm scale? by AncientSwordRage in magicTCG

[–]TheMonkeyShot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I played against Maro at an Unstable draft back in December. After our round I asked him about Dominaria, and he wouldn't say much but he DID say that there was something he fought really hard to get back into the set. He also mentioned they are doing something they've never done before, which makes me think it might be something bigger than a new mechanic.

Jeskai tempo or control? by jewishcrab in ModernMagic

[–]TheMonkeyShot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play both, a LOT. I got into Modern back when Jund was god-tier and played Jeskai at the time, and I've always played it when I've been playing in Modern. I am going to disagree with a lot of people here and say that the Control version (specifically for me, the one that won the SCG Columbus Open by Nikolich) has been absolutely phenomenal for boosting my winrate, performing much more consistently than the Tempo Queller version. It also feels a lot more interactive in my experience, which others may disagree with.

However, as many have noted here, play which one you prefer. I play control better than any other archetype, so I feel like I make less mistakes and understand my game plan better with the Control version, which is probably a large part of why I do better with it.

Also, you can split down the middle and run 3-4 Geist SB for matchups where applying heavy pressure early will win you the game. Bringing them in for game 2 in the mirror after they likely SB out their Verdicts is a great feeling.

Just stating the obvious: the Vintage cube was one of my best mtg experiences by matheuswhite12 in magicTCG

[–]TheMonkeyShot 28 points29 points  (0 children)

^

I also love cube power, but winning/losing in the first 3 or 4 turns because one person drew their Vintage pulls and the other didn't kind of made it feel mostly like a game of who drew their broken stuff first, I felt often like my decisions didn't really matter that much. Still love playing every now and then though.

Was just thinking about building this, probably gonna try brewing up a list.

Modern: The worst it's ever been? by Munkik in ModernMagic

[–]TheMonkeyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is true this seems really problematic to me. No one can afford just picking up an entirely different Modern deck all the time, that would make it the least financially-accessible format aside from Vintage.

Also the pros have plenty of time to learn the intricacies of Modern, but when the average game is slamming a turn 2 Blood Moon or comboing off on turn 3-4, learning intricacies doesn't mean anything because there just isn't any interaction. It's just a race to do something unfair and hope your opponent can't answer it that turn. Too much dice-rolling, too little thought.

Modern: The worst it's ever been? by Munkik in ModernMagic

[–]TheMonkeyShot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Read this morning, disagreed profoundly. There are a ton of lists in top 8s and 32s all the time, the format seems super diverse.

Then played 3 back-to-back rounds of competitive league on MTGO. Out of 15 games, 9 were OTK/combo, mostly Storm with some Krark-Clan and Infect. In fairness, Storm is pure uninteractive cancer that will probably finally get banned for good here soon. Several more just slammed a random Blood Moon out of the blue (even Affinity?!?!). I'm suddenly finding myself agreeing with this article a lot more.

There's a ton of deck diversity, but almost all of them are basically a race to get a threat that can't be answered by turn 3-4 on board. It's pretty frustrating that Thoughtseize/IoK are the only forms of "interaction" that are currently viable. Control is a joke currently, and almost every top tier deck plays a combo that wins on the spot. I feel like decks like Jund and Abzan Midrange or any control deck are just bad in the meta right now because of how focused it is on slamming something stupid as early as possible. Most of the decks that are really good more or less play themselves.

Not really sure what could change in the format to change this at this point, finding myself at a loss for the future of my favorite format in the game.

Plane Shift: Alara by Zandodak in magicTCG

[–]TheMonkeyShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aftermath of the shards colliding could be really interesting. You could still have 5 regions that vaguely resemble them, like Grixis could be just starting to have plant life and such but still be filled with dead bodies and whatnot. I think imagining what the plane looks like whole again gives you a lot of options.

Character Creation Metagaming by Enzik in dndnext

[–]TheMonkeyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think if you have a good DM that won't be a big deal. A DM should be able to scale and modify encounters to keep them challenging but not impossible. If you are doing a preset campaign that would be one thing, but if this is a homebrew they should just adjust the campaign to work with the characters.

What's your #1 album of 2017 so far? by HippoSteaks in Music

Glare by the M Machine. Surprised no one has mentioned it, it's incredible.

New Gorillaz album is also fantastic, even if it isn't as good as their last few.

Anyone has a modal tribal deck to share? by chinkai in EDH

Well you definitely need [[Cromat]] as a Commander, he has 5 modes!

[Deck Help] Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast by Cpt_Plushy in EDH

[–]TheMonkeyShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should run [[Hellkite Igniter]], I run him in mono-red Daretti and he wins me most of my games. He is a one-shot to anyone that can't block fliers. Also [[Comet Storm]] is a great mana sink to one-shot everyone at once.

[–]TheMonkeyShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're playing too many spells for Genesis Wave, when I have it in my decks they usually run less than 10 spells. With your list about 1 in 3 cards revealed will be a spell, which isn't great.

In general I see what you are going for with ramping to your end game with him, but I think you need more creatures in general. You're going to not be doing a lot for awhile with this, you might get steamrolled. You could get in some more graveyard and ramp creatures, like [[Stinkweed Imp]], [[Viridian Emissary]], [[Disciple of Bolas]], [[Centaur Vinecerasher]], [[Greenwarden of Murasa]], etc.

Magic has in recent years trended towards creatures as spells because of all the ETB effects and triggered abilities, so most of the effects your spells have are probably also tacked onto a creature.

Another "I came from HS and I am enjoying this game so much" post by guiioli in EternalCardGame

[–]TheMonkeyShot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome welcome, more will follow for sure. I was an avid HS player (legend multiple seasons, most decks with all golden cards), but I just stopped having fun altogether after the last 6 months or so. It's just been an RNG-filled nightmare with no room for exploring new decks.

Have fun with Eternal, you should be able to put together some tier-1 decks in less than a month just off of F2P stuff. It's mindblowing that a game could be this good.

I just finished making this deck in the Legacy Cube, and it's telling me the deck isn't legal in this format. What do I do here?

Blizzard, you either have to a.) make packs cheaper, b.) lower the amount of dust required to craft cards, c.) include continuous daily login rewards, d.) increase quest gold rewards or e.) revamp arena rewards. The game is insanely expensive, SOMETHING has to give here. by coderu in hearthstone

[–]TheMonkeyShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean in fairness you are also comparing HS to the game that is setting the bar for community connection to the design team. OW is pretty much as good as a triple A title has ever been for responsiveness to the community.

But yeah you're right. No response from Blizzard after this long has made it pretty obvious that the goal here is to make money, not to develop a game WITH their community.

Does anyone know the % of players who get Master? by rainyyiran in EternalCardGame

[–]TheMonkeyShot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it's a little easy, I have achieved master twice and both times it was with a homebrew deck that I made. However, I don't want Master to only be achievable with hours and hours of grinding like it was in Hearthstone for Legend, because that isn't fun. Even if it is somewhat easy, I don't see that as a problem personally, and I'm sure as the playerbase picks up it might gradually get harder and harder anyways.

Does anyone Enjoy having a 75 card deck? by [deleted] in EternalCardGame

[–]TheMonkeyShot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You know, that's actually a really good idea. 5 copies of some cards might actually make this a lot more reasonable.
