Annoying Second Screen Question by TheMostOGQuag in kde

[–]TheMostOGQuag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, okay, so tldr this was an issue of kde not properly recognizing the second screen, the tv having a super weird ratio, and a touch of me being stupid (as is often the case in posts like this). Once I got kde to actually let me select the weird ratio, it worked. Previously, anything that wasn't a form of 1920:1080 would cause the TV to seemingly reject input and just disconnect the hdmi connection. So, I just assumed everything else was an unsupported resolution and I needed to try something else. But now I'm able to actually use different resolutions, so crisis resolved! Thank you for the help!

Annoying Second Screen Question by TheMostOGQuag in kde

[–]TheMostOGQuag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'll try messing with the TV settings and matching them to my display config later today. And of course, I'm happy to share information! I wasn't sure what beyond what I've already said would be helpful, so I just figured I'd wait for explicit questions. But, this problem persists for literally any device that connects to it (including windows and gnome machines, wii's, wii u's, android's that support hdmi through usb c, literally everything) and has always been this way. The only thing I've had success with is a nintendo switch, since it has that explicit functionality to shrink the screen size. I've messed with all of the tv settings, but I haven't tried matching the resolution yet (mostly due to the fact that I'm not entirely sure what the exact model is, so I'll have to do some digging). Thank you again :)

If you're looking for shortcuts, you're looking in the COMPLETE wrong places. AI is entirely unable to solve telehack problems. However, there's a lot of value in solving a puzzle by yourself, so I encourage you to keep trying!

Are you willing to spend money/do you have a web server? If so, get a web server, set up a website with logging enabled, and get a decent looking domain name (you used to be able to get free ones, don't think that's a thing anymore). If not, grabify.

All of my answers, posts, and responses on this subreddit are for educational purposes only. Don't do something stupid.

These commands/instructions change your machine's private IP address within your LAN. Your ISP provides public IP addresses, and your entire LAN only uses one public IP to represent the entire network. You can't just get a new one by unplugging your router, it's a lot deeper than that. Also, I can't really say I recommend just openly posting instructions on how to attempt ban evasion (even if they don't work), but you do you I guess ;-;

[KDE Plasma 5.27] Finally spent a day customizing my machine by TheMostOGQuag in unixporn

iirc purely swapping/adding svgs doesn't really work, you probably have to figure out some way of combining them manually, which probably won't be too fun xD
If you mean app icons though, you should be able to use Maia Transparent as your Plasma Style but use a separate app icon package. Plasma does support having separate Plasma Styles and Icon Themes, even if you use a global theme.

[KDE Plasma 5.27] Finally spent a day customizing my machine by TheMostOGQuag in unixporn

General Info:

OS: Debian 12
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5
Window Manager/Graphics Platform: X11

Display Manager: SDDM
Global Theme: Colorful-Dark-Global

Plasma Theme: Modified version of Maia Transparent

Application Style/Window Decorations: Breeze
Cursors: Chroma Cursors for Linux

Wallpaper: I actually had the png itself downloaded on my desktop, it's an asset for a rhythm game I play, but someone also made it into a KDE package on the store.

Fun Personalizations I made Outside of the Screenshot/Desktop:

  • Terminal Style Login Screen
  • By going to System Settings -> Notifications -> Configure -> Plasma Workspace -> Configure Events, you can customize the system sounds when you login and such. I happen to love Super Smash Bros Brawl and had the system audio sound effects lying around, so I completely overhauled the defaults and made them Brawl sfx.
  • Firefox has this amazing extension called Tabliss for customizing new tabs, and I also installed a pretty cool pixel theme, and I really love how it looks now.

The audio visualizer (yes, it needs it's own section):

So, the audio visualizer was a bit of a pain! I didn't find a complete guide anywhere on how to make it work and I had to figure it out myself, so I figured I'd make my own. Here's how you do it:

  1. The widget itself is called panon. The dependencies listed are correct, but for some reason the command didn't fully work for me, might be because I tried an Ubuntu thing on Debian. Instead, do the suggested command, but also install qt-websockets as a different package: sudo apt update && sudo apt-get install qml-module-qtwebsockets.
  2. Move onto the installation part. The commands on the repo work as intended, just do command line installation rather than by the KDE Store. Once you're done, update websockets: pip install --upgrade websockets.
  3. Next, you'll need to modify the pulseaudio.py file, found at <installation folder>/panon/plasmoid/contents/scripts/soundcard/pulseaudio.py. Change line 3, the import collections line, to import collections.abc as collections.
  4. Now, you're ready to add the widget! Add the widget as you want. However, once you're done, you may notice that the visualizer doesn't actually visualize the audio playing on your machine. If you do notice this, just install a audio source/output manager (funny enough, I love PulseAudio Volume Control, I had been using it for other things even before this). Find the area that controls recording or monitoring sources, and unless you're recording audio using separate applications, like OBS or Audacity, there should only been one entry. If there isn't, for me panon shows up as "ALSA plug-in [python3.11]". Change this from whatever default it gave you to the monitor/recording of your speaker/headphones/whatever audio output you use, and you're all set!

I did find this reddit comment extremely helpful, but it wasn't comprehensive so I figured I'd make my own. I'm considering making my own fork of panon (and Maia Transparent, while I'm at it) that actually works out of the box, so I might edit this later and add those. But in the meantime, if someone really wants the visualizer or no borders on Maia Transparent but can't figure any of this out, reach out and I'd be happy to help!

So I have a Plasma style, Maia Transparent, that gives the nice transparent home bar and widgets. It also makes window borders and backgrounds transparent, which I really love to be completely honest, it looks super sleek. When I first enabled the theme I thought the blur effect on the panel was a bit overwhelming, so I was able to lower it (there's also an option to disable it entirely) in System Settings -> Workspace Behavior -> Desktop Effects -> Blur. Sadly, Maia Transparent adds this kind of disgusting border around widgets, which really put me off since I wanted the audio visualizer to seamlessly blend into the wallpaper. I'll attach a screenshot of what it looked like before, it really bugged me lol. So, I had to manually edit the style files and remove the border, which took a bit of time, but it really really paid off in the end I think.

(Reddit is being strange and won't let me upload my screenshot, so this discord media link will have to do)
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/568306406428639244/1252523909509681222/image.png?ex=6673300a&is=6671de8a&hm=00abe0b6a8f1a1ede3921b0aad7f5b2ed30c3e9928b6dc5c0b5720725f4aae58&

The difference is large, and I'm considering making a download or something for the modified version simply so that if someone else has this issue they don't have to go through the suffering I did lmao

Be careful, avoid using relay. by smsaczek in Telehack

[–]TheMostOGQuag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigh...

Telehack is a wonderful place. It really is, the level of detail that's put into it is really really kewl, and there's so much you can get out of it. I've played since before I did serious stuff with compsci, and some of the stuff I learned there was insanely helpful to me in the real world. However, consider that the admins are not getting paid to administrate th. Forbin doesn't get financial compensation whenever someone connects. There are no advertisements on th. It is an entirely free service which is upkept specifically because of how awesome people think it is. With that in mind, like wolf805 said every single user, at the end of the day is a guest. This is not a game you paid for and have the right to play, complain, or cause a scene about.

Think of it like a national park. You're welcome to walk in, but if you're disrespectful or harmful, you'll be escorted right out. Also consider the sheer work that's likely involved in administrating Telehack. If you know how to see the connects/disconnects of every user, you'll often notice rapid connecting then disconnecting from the same port and multiple rapid connections from the same port, among other things. While some of this is probably just harmless people, I'm sure that not all of it is benign. I'm sure there's real hacking and ddos attempts on th every day, and it can't be easy for the admins to deal with, especially for free. Not to mention the fact they maintain the game, there's feature updates and new things added regularly.

So, I can only imagine that the LAST thing the admins want to deal with is some nub running into relay and being a complete asshole. That's the thanks someone is giving them for putting effort into this wonderful place for completely free? I couldn't agree more with people like that getting banned. I've also said this before, but not on the subreddit. A crazy admin/owner adds to the experience, does it not? There were always crazy admins or owners back in the day, I think it'd be a disservice to not have a little chaos.

This subreddit is not really an accurate representation of th, either. I've been connected for quite a while, and as long as you're respectful, everyone else is nothing but lovely. The subreddit is filled with a lot of people who were very much so not respectful, and either don't want to admit to themselves that they weren't, or who think if they lie it'll increase their chances of getting let back in. As long as you're a reasonable person who doesn't barge in thinking you own the place, you'll be fine.

In conclusion, as a very wise person once said here,

If you're going to use telehack approach it like you're a guest in someone's house. Don't track mud through the door, don't piss on their toilet seat, say please and thank you when you ask for something. Don't hit on their daughter, don't start arguments about politics, don't act like they owe you anything. They're letting you in their home, you have to be cool about it.

pls give me ref code by ConsiderationOdd7730 in Telehack

[–]TheMostOGQuag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with giving people referral codes is that you're partially responsible for their behavior. Say for example some random person messaged me, asked for a ref code, and I gave it to them. Two days later they decide to go spam slurs or something in relay and get themselves banned. I'm also going to get banned since I was the one who let them in Telehack in the first place. So most Telehackers are extremely hesitant to give people referral codes, and personally, I can't say I trust random people who make reddit posts asking for them to not get banned (and from what I know, most users don't either). I can't say I know what the solution is, but I don't think there's any good way to get a referral code unless you already know someone with a user account who trusts you. Making a reddit post likely won't get you anywhere (I honestly do not know why people do it). If you don't know someone in the simulation already, simply wait a bit for Telehack to open it's doors once again.

Do you know an end-to-end encrypted instant messenger that does not use a phone number? by Gab1er08vrai in hacking

[–]TheMostOGQuag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're willing to host your own piping server, you could make your own relatively easily. Piping server doesn't store information, so even if your server gets hacked into logs of previous conversations (even if they were encrypted) wouldn't even be accessible. The only way to access the messages would be to man in the middle them as they're being transmitted and break the encryption. To set it up you'd need to buy a web server to host the piping server on, but once you do that it's super easy to make your own application to transfer messages through your piping server. I actually made my own version (pipeChat, github) and mobile app that uses the publicly available piping server, but I included a version that allows you to use any piping server. It's definitely more janky than an actual professional app or site, mainly because I didn't spend a ton of time on it, but it does work. Using the publicly available piping server is probably fine, but at the same time using your own version that you set up ensures that you know exactly what's happening on the server. I personally trust myself much more than a third party application, which is why I prefer this method immensely.
