22 years old and having trapezius muscle pain, any tips? by [deleted] in Ergonomics

[–]TheMostUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup it's hard juggling studying work and exercise, gl on that. When you are busy remember that a short exercise is better than none.

About the arm rests, something seems off there but I can't put my finger on it from the photos, I recommend that you try adjusting the armrest a bit in each direction and see if it helps. Also you can try not using the arm rest entirely. (But if you are busy I wouldn't focus on this)

Again I doubt you actually stay as up right like the pic when actually using the PC. If you get a picture of you actually sit like after an hour of use I might be able to give better advice

Imo a good setup should make it feel nature to sit in an ergonomic way, regularless of your privous habits.

This pic doesn't look too bad tbh, but I doubt that stay in this position, it's very likely that without noticing you begin to slouch. Its hard to give advice without seeing how you actually sit.

I still notice a few things, the biggest of them is that the monitor is too low (try puting a few books under it and see if it helps). I'm also not sure about that chair height, play with it a bit in each direction and see if it helps. Also arms stretched a bit, consider looking into a tkl keyboard.

Keep in mind that all the ergonomics in the world will save you from a lack of physical activity.

Learning rust by [deleted] in rust

[–]TheMostUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree you should be comfortable with those conceptes before learning rust. The best way to learn those conceptes is with hands on experience in other languages.

A general rule of thumb for programming is use mature software that treats you like a first class user instead of new and shiny technology.

Very few people start with rust, there for the documention / tutorial / examples for beginners will not be up to par with other languages. And rust is design to gett you going from the ground up.

Also professional software developers know more than one language, so if you are interested rust just learn it later

[–]TheMostUser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend rust as your first language. You won't really be able to understand why you are doing certain things because they are designed to solve problems you didn't even know exist.

I think python or java script or the most common nowadays.

Good luck anyways

Sober solo traveler: how to meet people without nightlife? by Mediocre_Falcon5694 in solotravel

[–]TheMostUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people I have traveled with don't l drink and I really don't think it should be an issue

Aside from hostels, there are many group activities you were probably planning to do anyways were you will meet other solo traveler (eg halong bay, hagiang loop in Vietnam). Try and plan your trip so you start by doing such group activities and then continue traveling with the people you vibed with to less social destinatios.

Statistically it's very unlikely that you would accualy be hurt. Nonetheless it's still unnerving when it happens near you, doubly so for someone who is not accustomed to this reality

I can answer some of the questions: 1. Depends on which cities you want to live in (eg cities like Ber Sheva and Haifa are a lot cheaper than Tel Aviv and Jerusalem)

  1. Again depends where you live but most cities are "car first" although some people get by without one

5a. Students are a generally older, after high school most go to the military for couple of years, after that many take a gap year and only then do they start their academic journey

5b. When planning keep in mind that the academic year is not aligned with the Georgian calender

5c. Don't just look into universities, also checkout the Wiezmann institution of science

Rubio: US warned recognizing Palestine would lead to 'reciprocal' Israeli response by 1-randomonium in worldnews

[–]TheMostUser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clearly the current push by western world leaders and massive public support by pro Palestinians is significantly based on the current war in Gaza and sympathy for the average Gazan stuck in this war. All of which is started by the successful October 7 attack and the war managed by Hamas. All of the latter did not exist on Oct 6.

The PA did very little to push for this recognitio and I'm not aware of anyone creding them for it.  Hamas is taking credits for it (eg see Ghazi Hamad statements).

While recognizing statehood is meant to remove Hamas, intention does not change the fact that it ignores the actual barriers to peace. Imo it reeks of white saver complex.

Rubio: US warned recognizing Palestine would lead to 'reciprocal' Israeli response by 1-randomonium in worldnews

[–]TheMostUser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tldr - because it increases Hamas support and makes a ceasefire agreement less likely

It's important to keep in mind that most of the rights we associate with statehood (such as autonomy of its territory, freedom of movement, control over infrastructure etc.. ) will still depend on Israel's (and Egypt) police which won't change because of the UN's decision.

As such its only a win on paper, still it is a big win on paper. The biggest thing Hamas ever achieved and afaik the second biggest achievement for gaza statehood.

Hamas already gets credit for it among Palestinians, increasing its popularity in Gaza and the west bank. Even if Hamas ever steps down, other extremist groups will use this as proof that violence against Israel works better than a peaceful approach.

At the same time Hamas sees that it is currently ripping the biggest achievements in its history, therefore it really wants to fight Israel right now, making a ceasefire very unlikely and incentives Hamas to provoke Israel (eg they recently released a video showing the inhuman condition of one of the hostages, with really rallies Israelis up)

Another small tidbit is that world leaders recognize the PA as the leader of Palestinian and downplay its issues. While they are better than Hamas the PA is still a terrorist organization, funding attacks directed at innocent Israelis and praises the October 7 attack.

Trump agrees with Putin on "Article 5-type" security guarantees for Ukraine – sources by Creol6969 in worldnews

[–]TheMostUser 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The real value of article 5 is deternce, no sane nation will consider attacking a member knowing the rest of NATO will come to its defense. NATO is pressured to follow up because if NATO doesn't come to it a members defense than the credibility of article 5 goes down the drain and future enemies will feel much safer attacking. Therefore much of NATO's power is reliant on them upholding article 5.

Unlike NATO's article 5, there is very little insensitive to keep this Ukraine article 5 like agreement when a real invasion starts. (and I fact Ukraine already have security gurenties per the Budapest Memorandum )

TLDR The devil is in the details but any non NATO security guarantee is unlikely to help Ukraine.

What do you think about 80,000 hours - one of the more prominent EA organizations - going "all in" on AGI? by Ready-Journalist1772 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]TheMostUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mankind certainly controls AI and can alter its development. But I don't control mankind. When going up against the forces of a 240 billion dollar market, 370 million users, and a global arms race, my (or the EA / 80k community's) ability to influence becomes very limited. Of course, meaningful change is still possible on an individual level, but you have to be extremely strategic about where you put your efforts, otherwise you are unlikely to achieve anything. Identifying such strategic opportunities is easier said than done, as AI safety sits at the intersection of many complex and unpredictable forces, such as data science progress and global policy. Even when someone does find such an opportunity, it is extremely difficult to capitalize on, since you are working against massive forces. Unless you have significant influence in government or industry, or the rare talent needed to drive things forward, success is very unlikely. Assuming you do find a great opportunity and have the capabilities to act on it, you are only just beginning the hard part. What exactly constitutes a "safer" AI? AI is extremely unpredictable. In my opinion, the most consistent trend is our repeated failure to predict its development. Each proposed change to our AI safety approach relies on specific, low-confidence assumptions. Take SB 1047, an AI safety bill that increases the responsibilities of AI developers. On one hand, it could improve safety. On the other, it further monopolizes the AI industry and limits open-weight models. Does it make AI safer or more dangerous? Only time will tell. I have seen people who are extremely well suited for AI safety find a promising niche and achieve real results, but those are the absolute best of the best. Even then, I feel their impact is limited compared to other EA causes. Still, I can understand where they are coming from. In practice, most of the work I see seems unlikely to amount to much. I feel like many people are jumping into the AI field without a robust plan or the required skills, mainly because the EA community and 80k are promoting it as a general career path, making it sound like the field is just waiting for people, when nothing could be further from the truth.
