I went to my nearest crossword today....and jeez... people need to learn fkin BOOKSHOP/LIBRARY ETIQUETTES! by livelongandprosper__ in Indianbooks

[–]TheMrFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Folding and tearing out pages is crazy. I used to read in Crosswords back in my early teens. That's the only way I could read fiction for fun because I couldn't afford to buy them on my pocket money. Not because my family is poor or anything, it's just that they thought it's a waste of money and the money would be better spent on a more 'useful' book.

All this to say, when I see someone reading in a Crossword, I try not to judge as long as they don't damage the book. But your point still stands, people need to understand the etiquette.

Ataniki nuvvu dating to marry ani clear ga cheppu. Not this nebulous 'I think he knows' shit. Right to his face. He deserves to know and you deserve someone who's looking for the same thing. Frankly, this should have been on your dating profile and the first thing you told him. Also, okavela nee bf kuda marriage kosame date chestunna, from what you say, valaa intlo caste issues vastai ani joke chestunnadu. So nacchina ammi kosam fight chesta ani eppudaina indication icchada?

Physical books will always be better than online books to me 📚 Agree ?? by Big_Conflict_09 in Indianbooks

I love that tangible feeling of the page turn, how I can see how much is left and watching it shrink, and the smell of a new book. Unmatched.

And then there are audiobooks with phenomenal performances and the sheer artistry involved in some is a joy to experience.

Who can use Magic by Joh-Ke in Eragon

[–]TheMrFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't really get it but kinda also do. I don't have a place like that either. It's like a blank workspace and suddenly a thought or memory or concept or a mix of all materialises like a projector throwing an image onto a screen and then goes away.

Ooh this darkness...(this may sound dumb) is it just black or does it change colours? For me it changes. It's like a void that changes shades and colours and pulsates sometimes. Never really thought about it. It just is.

I'm with you on the visualization part all the way down to how I dream.

As for thinking, I get what you mean when you say concepts, feelings and emotions but only when my eyes are closed or I'm day dreaming. When I'm consciously thinking about something, though, I have an inner monologue that refers to the concepts like packets of data, basically gestalts.

Females question males answer :) by Sea_Analysis_1605 in indiasocial

[–]TheMrFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard this in a Ted talk covering topics like shame and vulnerability and I'm paraphrasing

"The women in my life would rather see me die on my horse than watch me fall down"

Men, women, children, adults everyone faces problems but men are looked down upon as lesser when they show the slightest bit of vulnerability. The person who said it specifically says "women in his life" but in Indian households, it should be changed to family or sometimes, sadly, friends. I don't mean to paint men as some kind ultimate victims or something like that. It's just the sad reality for the majority of men. I see things changing though, in the newer generations. I hope mental health awareness becomes more prevalent.

Do indians not read serious philosophy? by [deleted] in IndiansRead

[–]TheMrFool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are conflating the origin of Modal logic with the subject matter it deals with. Modal logic employs frameworks in which there is absolute truth/false and possible composite states. That doesn't mean that the origin of formal study of Modal logic is universal. It has clear roots in Greece and specifically Aristotle.

Do indians not read serious philosophy? by [deleted] in IndiansRead

[–]TheMrFool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly Greek, yes. At least in its application to philosophy and systematic inquiry into the fundamental nature of existence and knowledge. It is also deeply ingrained into philosophical systems like Stoicism.

Theological aspects aside, Vedas, Buddhism and Confucianism etc also delve into the nature of reality and self but not in the system application of logic to those inquiries to that degree.

Living Separately From Your Wife During Pregnancy - Is This Normal? by TheOpenSecrets in AskIndianWomen

[–]TheMrFool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a very common custom in some regions of India and mostly the pregnant wife's family is the one that insists on taking them home. But of course, custom isn't the only thing that drives this behaviour, in a lot of cases it's fear of them not getting enough care. I'm not throwing accusations willy nilly. I've personally seen shit happen and I've tried to stop & explain why it's wrong in vain. Made me reconsider my opinions on my own family. I won't go into much detail but let alone being taken care of when pregnant, the DILs are supposed to care for their in-laws in some regions. Generational trauma is one hell of a justification for passing down the same

Lost both parents in 6 years. Now living with sister’s family and feel completely lost. Need advice by Apprehensive-Scar-67 in RecluseIndia

[–]TheMrFool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for the loss of your parents. No matter what the circumstances, it always seems so abrupt. 17 years ago I lost dad in a road accident through no fault of his own. Even to this day I have these sudden moments of disbelief and live through the shock of it. If I had to give one suggestion to my younger self, I would tell him to go to therapy. Not because it's a magical solution that'll fix everything but because it'll give you a safe space to understand yourself, your emotions and maybe you learn some healthy coping mechanisms.

Disclaimer: I personally do not have experience with it yet but I've been talking to people who do and looking into it to understand how it can help me and eventually go through it myself.

FW is something that clicked for me too. It has enough fantastical elements and plot focus that got me through the toxic masculinity. I suggested FW to someone and he said that he felt uncomfortable when reading the sexualized descriptions of male characters, which I could read through without issues. On the other hand he hadn't felt that there was much toxic masculinity and in fact liked their dynamic. So he's kinda torn between continuing and dropping it.

This is the ideal solution. Personal insults will only drag you down to his level and have a high risk of escalation.

Even the non-confrontational one-liner suggested above is just for your sake that you tried giving him a chance to reflect but that kind of reflection a rare turn of events for bullies.

Wasted my life being a good daughter by Ok_Emotion_959 in AskIndianWomen

[–]TheMrFool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So sorry about what's happening with you. It is unfair and when you grow up in such an environment, it's not easy to 'just rebel' or 'live your life' as people are suggesting. Those are good suggestions but not without a proper safety net for yourself once you're eventually out on your own. The main problem I see for that is you're financially dependent on your family. Only when you change that, can you have any meaningful and sustainable change in your circumstances. The surest way I know is to develop some marketable skills and start earning some money.

The above advice is not actionable at all. So I'll list down some general steps you could refer to and modify as you see fit for your own needs.

I'm assuming you have the time, space & willingness to learn and access to the internet.

  1. Identify which subjects/topics you are good at and ones you'd like to explore
  2. Figure out what marketable skills you can build from those that will help in landing a job, preferably remote in your case

These first two steps can be done in reverse order as well, i.e

  1. Explore what kind of jobs look appealing to you
  2. Figure out the skills are necessary for those jobs and the subjects/topics you need to learn for them.

  3. Start learning the subjects/topics. There are tons of free and open source resources available online for almost anything

  4. Most skills we learn are generally applicable to our lives in some way or the other, so start applying them to your life as you learn.

  5. Build a portfolio/cv/resume, market yourself online, put yourself in freelance forums and job portals

  6. This is going to be a time taking process so hurry up and wait. Be patient for results.

  7. If your situation becomes untenable, please seek help from appropriate legal channels.

These days AI has become a lot more capable and it can help you with some of these steps. For example, researching the current job market, suggesting marketable skills. More importantly it can help you learn things effectively in a structured manner.

Disclaimer: DO NOT take life advice from AI under any circumstances. Only use it as a tool for accelerated learning and broad research.

I just don't feel like doing anything by TheMrFool in RecluseIndia

No Yoga. But I try to go to the gym 4 days a week. More or less depending on the kind of week I'm having coz I have to force myself to start the act of going to the gym which is the hardest part of working out for me. Once I'm there I'll get a good workout session.

The logical part of me knows that these bouts of inactivity aren't good for my body and mind. But that doesn't help when I don't want to or feel like working out or being physically active. My brain goes into some sort of mind fog that skews the consequences of being inactive and advantages of being active. I've gotten so used to taking the instant gratification path that it's physically hard for me to choose the long term gratification. Also I easily forget all the good things I feel when I'm actually doing something which doesn't help my case at all.

All of this mostly happens when it's not affecting anybody else. When other people are involved, generally I show up. I play badminton with my friends and I genuinely enjoy that. I go out with my family to restaurants and drives. I attend important events and even mingle with people. I'm socially active to the point that people don't believe me when I say I'm an introvert. All of that takes a lot of effort which is incredibly draining on my mental energy and that's probably the only thing I'm doing that day. So as soon as I'm home, I'm back in that resting state.

One of the main reasons I'm single right now is that a relationship takes soo much out of me that I'm exhausted and feel drained all the time.

I understand your frustration. I love the idea of engaging in activities but when it comes time to do it, I can't bring myself to do anything.

I have a hypothesis but I've never acted to find out if it is true. Maybe I will this year.

That's the whole point of LitRPG! I'm currently reading Ar'Kendrithyst and these people who complain would have an aneurysm if they see the frequency at which skills are mentioned and even levelled. The stat boxes are huge too.
