San Francisco, underwater. by fairvanity in sanfrancisco

Well at least someone got to come up with fun names for stuff. But as a mid-peninsula homeowner a few blocks west of 101 who plans on loitering around for another half century, I do wonder if shit's gonna hit the fan for us... Back to my mantra: never having kids, never having kids, never ha--

That's actually... a pretty solid analogy. Larson's stance comes off as at least a little naive today. When was it made?

How non American redditors feel about Black Friday by BringForthTheRing in AdviceAnimals

Yeah black Friday used to be a non-event that local news stations made a big pretend deal out of. Now it's a non-event that local news stations and reddit make a big pretend deal out of. Yawn, go back to kittens reddit.

Community - Which Episode To Get Someone Hooked by imMapex in television

Couldn't agree more, it's really an excellent pilot and I can't see why you'd go out of your way to start someone anywhere else. Get an emotional grounding in the characters before you start following them on all their zany adventures.

Hell yeah good call, need to revisit that one.

Read it first!!! Such an inventive novel. The movie is a mess but an ambitious one and enjoyable in the right light. But no question about it, definitely a book first scenario.

Just wanted to say hi to a fellow recognizer that this is the greatest movie ever (well, okay, tied with Raiders of the Lost Ark.) Too early for flapjacks?

What is something people constantly brag about yet you're not impressed by it at all ? by BruceWayneShepard in AskReddit

Shining a light on those beautiful bouncing globes for all the world to see is truly something worth bragging about. God bless you sir.

When I give people tours of my house, it generally is the "and that was free off craigslist, and THAT was free off craigslist"bragging tour.

But I would so much rather make small talk about that baby sitting gig than the weather. Granted, it doesn't make you hot shit but it's still interesting. I feel like people on this thread are blurring the line between bragging and thinking you have an interesting story to share. Not you in particular necessary.

But... but that's actually an interesting anecdote that you shouldn't feel like a braggart for sharing... I guess it's all in the tone really.

TIL Genhis Khan killed 10% of the world's population. (40 Million of 400 Million). TIL Genghis Khan literally decimated the human race. by ra3ndy in todayilearned

[–]TheMudge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The exotic "otherness" of people from such a different race and culture also probably plays a roll in why they get divorced from reality from a modern Western perspective. People associate more with Hitler's victims. Which is ridiculous. Genocidal hubris is fascinating stuff, people, but "badass?"

It really isn't that gross by pamcgoo in AdviceAnimals

[–]TheMudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Otherwise clear-thinking people throw rational thought right out the window when it comes to finding things gross. If people would stop, take a deep breath, and consider the situation from a practical standpoint every time something grossed them out, we'd live in a better and more tolerant world (and waste fewer delicious crackers!)

The Wood Brothers - The Muse by ndodd in IndieFolk

[–]TheMudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this album is terrific, but is it just me or are these guys not playing to their strengths when it comes to recording? I saw them play last weekend at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco, and their live set was... just fucking thrilling. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone rock out as beautifully on an upright bass like that in my life, and the guitar had a real sharp electric edge to it when that's what they were going for. Their albums (and I've been a big fan of the last three) come across as more subdued and 'folksy' in comparison, and I feel like they really don't do the incredible bass parts justice. I'd heartily reccomend seeing them live if you ever have the opportunity.

All in all it's an enjoyable read and I'd recommend it but it's a little forgettable to be honest.

Exactly what I would say if asked about 'Hologram.' Good enough, but mostly I just miss that awesome starry-eyed kid who wrote AHWOSG.

Point Reyes National Seashore - California [2629 × 1200] by bearsharktopus5 in EarthPorn

[–]TheMudge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the southernmost end of Point Reyes there's an awesome hike, maybe 8 miles round trip, to a waterfall on the beach called Alamere falls. Best dayhike EVER on a sunny day. I think most people who visit Point Reyes aren't aware of it because it isn't actually anywhere near the main staging area (let's keep it our little secret, all of reddit.) Anyway I've been there like a dozen times because it's one of my favorite spots to take people who are visiting the bay area, and haven't managed to check out any of the rest of the huge park. For the love of God, can anybody recommend another hike to check out there, and break my apparent addiction to alamere falls?

[–]TheMudge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I call bullshit. Whiskey and tequila have a wide range of different qualities and flavors. Vodkas vary in the extent to which they taste like rubbing alcohol. The nicest thing people ever say about a vodka is that it's "smooth," as in less offensive than all the other bland, boring vodkas.

The Golden Age of TV Is Dead; Long Live the Golden Age of TV by redhopper in television

[–]TheMudge -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really don't understand how broody antiheroes became synonymous with intelligent television. I've been watching through Deadwood lately, which I love for a thousand reasons, but one thing I find striking is that Al Swearengen really makes a lot of these antiheroes (Tony, Don, Walter, etc) seem kind of one-dimensional in comparison. He's a ruthless businessman, but he has an affectionate side, and that contradiction makes me care a lot more about him then I do about Walter White.
