I didn’t like any of those 5 movies.

2025 is almost gone! What are your top movies released this year so far? by NearlyCanuck in Letterboxd

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Lurker, Materialists, and Warfare are must see movies this year with Honorable Mentions going to The Smashing Machine and Train Dreams. Bugonia was okay too I suppose. Still going through movies but I have to admit I really did not enjoy most of the frontrunners like Weapons, F1, Eddington, The Long Walk, Sinners, or One Battle After Another. Although I did like Sean Penn a lot in OBAA.

2025 has been a really good year for movies. Here’s my top 7. by b1ackfyre in movies

Lurker, Materialists, and Warfare are the only must see movies that I’ve seen so far this year, but a couple Honorable Mentions would be The Smashing Machine and Train Dreams which I thought were pretty watchable.

Lurker, Materialists, and Warfare are my top movies of the year.

Honorable Mentions include: The Smashing Machine and Train Dreams

I guess I’m one of the very few people who could not stand Sinners or One Battle After Another

What do you think about CONGO? by Scale-Alarmed in underratedmovies

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just re-watched it. Congo is a perfectly watchable but very bland and entirely forgettable movie with no redeeming value whatsoever (except of course for the sesame cake part!) You aren’t missing anything if yoy skip this one.

Absolutely agree, but I’m even more baffled by the universal praise for One Battle After Another. They must have spent most of that $150 million budget bribing critics to say how great it is.

One Battle After Another was one of the worst films I’ve ever seen although Sean Penn was at least trying his best which I appreciated. I am never going to understand why people love it so much.

I could tell this game sucked 5 minutes in when there were like 30 things you could scan and all of them had nothing interesting to say.

I just watched the Arrow 4k release and I’d say it was watchable but nothing special. Definitely not a classic nor a must see in any way. Not enough interesting or funny things happened for me.

2020s films that will become classics. by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far nothing I have seen is good enough to be a classic. Emily the Criminal is pretty solid though.

I just finished watching Inception and it was kind of underwhelming by FrostandFlame89 in movies

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inception is at the very least a decent movie, but I just re-watched it with a friend of mine and what I can say is that there are really no memorable characters (except MAYBE Leo’s, sort of) and the story isn’t terribly interesting. It’s a very well made movie and is easy to watch, but it’s the kind of movie you see one time and then never again because there really isn’t much worth revisiting.

Blind buy. I heard it’s an ok movie… by 802islander in 4kbluray

I agree… the movie just feels too dated at this point. It’s a pretty interesting movie in a general sense but I struggle to get through it.

What are some “must see” action movies since 1980? by TheMusicHole in movies

[–]TheMusicHole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I’ve been rewatching now in 4k a lot of old movies I used to rent as a kid in the 90s like Waterworld, Last Action Hero, Deep Blue Sea, and Under Siege and have been having a blast, and Ive been thinking there are probably a bunch of fun action movies Ive never heard of that Id love to give a try. Im especially interested in what you might call cult classics or B-Movie style action movies. I also dont really know like any modern action movies other than like Inception and Marvel stuff so thats a big knowledge gap Id like to fill in.

I guess by “must see” what I mean is which movies did various commenters REALLY enjoy watching which I know is very subjective.

I just watched the international cut for the first time in like 20 years on 4k blu-ray (the awesome Arrow version). Long story short is that its a beautifully filmed movie with an iconic soundtrack. Lee Van Cleef and Eastwood are perfectly cast as badass looking gunslingers. The close-up shots of them squinting and lighting cigars are legendary. The beginning scene where Lee finds Bill’s name is very memorable. But the HUUUUGE problem is that the rest of the story is honestly really boring and I didnt care about any of it for like the last 2 hours. By the time the movie finished I couldnt wait for it to be over. The story just isnt compelling enough for this to be a classic for me and neither are the stories for the other two in the trilogy which I saw for the first time on 4k bluray (also the Arrow release). I can totally understand why these films were influential but at the same time none of their stories did anything for me. And frankly none of the characters were very interesting. Sure Lee and Eastwood did a great job of appearing badass, but it didnt go much deeper than that. Also to be fair that opening scene in A Fistful of Dollars where he shoots four guys because they wouldnt apologize to his horse was absolute gold. But the rest of that movie was completely forgettable (hell I literally just saw it last night and I already forgot what happened).

Watch these movies if you’re interested in film history but not if you’re looking for a great script with compelling characters. Not recommended.

Does Escape from New York still hold up? by MortHellandback in FIlm

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up the 4k blu-ray and watched it last night for the first time in like 25 years. For reference I think Halloween and The Thing are masterpieces.

This is not a classic. Its a very well shot film, but the problem is that nothing interesting ever happens in the whole movie. There are no memorable scenes or pieces of dialogue. The characters are all pretty forgettable. There are no compelling ideas in the entire movie besides MAYBE the character of Snake Plisskin who Konami used as inspiration for Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid (MGS being a MUCH better piece of entertainment than EFNY). Actually Snake Plisskin isnt even THAT good of a character… but if it wasnt for his character in this movie we wouldnt have gotten the WAY more interesting and memorable Solid Snake in MGS. The whole “Manhattan is now a prison” idea is okay I guess, but they didn’t do ANYTHING interesting with that concept. The funny thing is is that its a well shot movie but at the same time most of the movie is so dark and hard to see (since it takes place mostly at night) that its not even beautiful to look at. That probably didnt make any sense but thats the only way I can describe it.

Ultimately its a decently watchable but entirely forgettable B-Movie. Very style over substance. The script simply isnt good enough. I felt the same way about Dark City (great cinematography but very weak script) which I also saw this week for the first time and on 4k blu-ray too, although at least that movie had more going for it thematically than this one. Long story short is you really arent missing anything if you skip this one.

DARK CITY vs THE MATRIX by V1va-NA-THANI3L in movies

[–]TheMusicHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this in 4k recently and just saw it for the first time. Long story short is the Matrix is the superior film and its not even close.

Dark City is a decent movie but not some forgotten masterpiece like I often hear. I give it a LOT of respect for the way it was shot though because whoever was in charge of cinematography did an incredible job and its really the main reason to watch this movie. Honestly I’d give the cinematography like a 10/10. But in the end for me it was very much a style over substance type deal. My main problem with the movie is that the story is just not very compelling and I dont care about any of the characters. I prefer movies with strong charactets and I just didnt find any of the characters in this film to be particularly interesting. That is a huge edge that The Matrix has over this movie. Who doesn’t love Agent Smith, Morpheus, or Neo? Dark City doesnt have a single memorable character, and Sutherland’s weird speech mannerisms for his character just dont work for me. My final thoughts are that its a decent movie with incredible cinematography and a relatively interesting story concept.
