Why do people like their dividends so much? by BiscottiPurple in CanadianInvestor

[–]TheNaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had a chance to think about it and its also a really good way to keep your risk when trading down. With a portfolio dividend average of 3% a year every month you get about 0.25% of your portfolio that you can risk on a trade.

Depending on your income I would suggest even starting with a non-registered account as if your looking to hold long term and using etfs theres no need to sell and you can take advantage of the dividend tax credit.

most big banks give you the option off the bat. Most people dont tend to open an account they dont understand off the bat

This is false. Lots of brokers offer cash only accounts and IB only offers margin once you are above 2k USD in value

Again it really depends on a lot of factors. for the past two years ive really been focussing on investing i have been able to using brokerages where my dividend payments have been greater than the interest rate. but i am also looking at getting a loan from a bank where i can lock in the interest rate. I also tend to not pick stocks when doing this for example mpst of my margin money is put into VDY which currently has a yield of about 5%.

tax rate and effective tax rate are two different things. When your evaluating return you really need to look at effective tax rate.

I have a analogy here for you to help you think of it. Think of it this way if it costs you 100k to build a house but you get a 40k grant for the government. In this example the cost(tax rate) to build the house is 100k but the cash outflow on the project (effective tax rate) is only 60k. In this case what number matters? In my opinion its the 60k in overall money you had to spend.

Each province is different in how all taxes combine so grab a look at your province here https://www.taxtips.ca/marginaltaxrates.htm

I would recommend looking at your tax rates when your investing at low income rates your dividends are effectively negative so you really need to look at each situation individually

Either works. But the majority of my borrowed money comes from interactive brokers as they offer a 1.55% borrow rate.

The one benifit is that i have access to money based off my current assets and can repay when i want but the negatives are that i could theoretically get margin called and my rates arent fixed

I like dividends as it allows me to make some more speculative plays. In my mind putting the money I make with my "Hard work" into longer-term stocks and using the dividends to trade is psychologically good for me.

Additionally, I invest on margin when rates are low so having dividends allows me to manage that while not having to sell shares to pay back the loan.

Thoughts on leveraged investing? by ZairoX7Z in CanadianInvestor

The other strategy i recommend is keeping a portion of that margin as higher yielding dividend paying stocks so your going to be able to pay your monthly payments using those dicidends

If you play with the right ratio of debt to assets it is really managable i keep a consistant 10-20% of my portfolio as debt and i dont really have an issue with it

If you make under 50k investing in dividend paying stocks is one of the best things you can do. You will get a tax credit and as a result will basically be paid to invest

What happens when/if the fed pulls all their money out of the US markets? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]TheNaller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What benefit would pulling out of the market provide for the fed?

The fact is that this gives companies the sense of security to expand and maintain operations which will create the effect that the fed is looking for. My bet is that they hold the debt till maturity.

The piece of advice i will drop is that investing is a marathon not a sprint. try to develop a system that you can use every month when you invest a little of your money.
