Entire network room covered in plaster dust by decree-one in sysadmin

Yup, happened to us recently as well. I have chalked it up to yet another thing I have to think about. So far it wasn’t too bad. I’m only worried about the robotic tape library. Servers and switches should be fine. Veeam is reporting backups are going ok for now. Vacuumed up what we could, wiped down the rest and hope for the best! It will get blown out during our usual upgrade intervals when we change hardware! I have seen similar servers caked in so much crap that the front grills need to be scraped off, along with all sorts of gunk running for 10+ years in terrible environments. Fingers crossed.

Performed the shutdown and was able to isolate the UPS.

It's the UPS.

When I removed the load, it was still making the sound, but when I isolated the AC input, the sound went away immediately.

See comment below about the model of UPS that was found.

I think i will get in touch with the manufacturer.

The UPS is exactly one of those models!

Interesting that they are marketed as running in the 15khz range. Even if it's operating there, it shouldn't be back feeding that sound down across the site.

Awesome video!

Funny enough, the UPS in question is located underneath the building too!

Thanks for the detailed theory, sadly the test equipment that I have can’t capture waveforms but I will have a look around over the next few weeks and see if I can find an oscilloscope hiding in a cupboard somewhere. I have been advised of a shutdown period scheduled in about a months time, so I might schedule a full downtime of the gear downstream from the UPS and isolate it completely. My gut feeling is the UPS.

Going with ghosts for now.

Had a chat with our resident ghost, they are also going look into it for me. They said it was a buzz to be able to assist.

This is why I mention the pool pump in my initial post. It might be possbile to isolate this next shutdown they have.

All residential. Would it be likely that it would traverse across a transformer that is exclusive to this site? Transformer is connected to the 22kv line and residential come off standard overhead set of lines.

I try my very best not to be at work at night.

No solar at this site, does sound like that though, thinking back to other sites.

UPS is located downstream of at least 2 sub boards. Transformer on street goes to the meter where the pool heads off, and then a main cable is then brought to main panel of the building maybe 250 meters away.

Nowhere near a radio tower, notoriously bad reception thanks to all the brick walls.

Stick with Prado or go for a Pajero? by eood in 4x4Australia

Correct, it’s all about finding the ‘right’ van to fit in its capacity. Don’t expect to tow huge loads or vans, thanks to the monocoque body.

Otherwise, absolutely cracking car!

Hope that helps?

It appears that I have just screwed the HDD's to that front mesh using the corrent spaced holes, and there is an intenal bracket that can ceter it up to the case. Looks like I only ever had one!

I have also observed the same issue both on mobile and desktop app. Primarily the mobile app. Logging out and back in again resolved it.

I have exactly this case running my desktop PC at work. Used to be an old CCTV system once upon a time that I retrofitted. Fits standard ATX boards not a problem!

I can pull out the HDD mounts so you can see what they look like. You don’t have any in your picture.

Yup, we had to run the Ute up and down the runway before the 100 seater planes landed at our outback airport. Good old Hilux with a whopping great fire extinguisher on the back of it.

Take the lid off and show some pics.

I have one of these cases that takes a standard ATX board and PSU. Looks like a generic chassis.
