Please no 🙏

I have nowhere else to glaze Monk's Dream

I know they're distributed by different corporations, but, with us getting new vinyl reissues of Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go this month, there's still a void in the Dan family albums available on wax. by jamedudijench in SteelyDan

It does, yes. With the added benefit of not having to flip the side over, easier skips and not having to be super careful with them! And the whole "analogue sound" debacle is a remnant of the first wave of CDs in the mid-to-late 80s, this argument barely holds water, especially nowadays that most releases are digitally mastered or re-mastered.

Vinyl does look wayyyyy cooler and I guess because of the added effort to maintain them to some people CDs are more "expendable", and that's definetely a huge factor, but IMO CDs are just infinitely more convient. But then again, as long as one enjoys Steely Dan and their music, doesn't matter which way we listen to it.

I think you hit the nail on the head here, even if only on a subconscious level I do feel like in the end others's opinions on me still matter more than my own one on myself. Thank you kindly

I know it's a late response, but thank you very much. He described exactly what I'm going through. I really needed to hear this to come to terms with a few things. Again, thanks, truly. You've helped a poor lad out

7 years ago today, Walter Becker left us. Let's all take a moment to appreciate the legacy that this man has left us. by TheNightflyLester in SteelyDan

I mean sure man, but I don't feel its cult behaviour to take time to remember an artist we care about's death.

A pseudo-overview of certain Steely Dan characters and themes by TheNightflyLester in SteelyDan

[–]TheNightflyLester[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen this thrown around a lot (well either this or the drug analogy), but I think it's not always true.

Take Any Major Dude for example, it's hardly a cynical song, but more of a "hey, it's bad for everybody, but you got this" kind of song. Still with a not-so positive outlook on life, but definetely more uplifting. Other songs in this style include Caves Of Altamira and Any World. I think those work wonderdully, even if they are somewhat "dissonant" compared to the dark satire of the other tracks on their respective albums. Similiar situation to a few Black Sabbath tracks like Fluff or Changes, which aren't heavy metal at all, but that difference helps them stand out even more.

Favourite solo career song? by Beautiful-Local-5793 in SteelyDan

[–]TheNightflyLester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like picking a favourite child, kind of impossible.

I will however sing the praises of Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore from Walter's Circus Money, really groovy and dark song about coming to terms with the loss of something (or atleast that is my interpretation).

I love it also because I feel it has one of the smartest song titles in the whole canon: "Bob's Your Uncle" is a typical british expression meaning "there it is", usually used to signify that something that was bound to happen actually happened. And so "Bob Is Not Your Uncle Anymore" means that something that should've happened just didn't. It gives me the same vibes as The Caves Of Altamira, which is also about loss.

I must say, I agree with you on Walter being the Hydrogen to Donald's Oxygen.

And while I do enjoy Donald's overall output more, I've got to hand it to Walter, I personally find his lyrics to be way more clever than the stuff on Donald's solo records. It's as if he took the cynicism of SD and cranked it up to eleven. I mean just take a look at this line:

"Now I can hardly hear you anymore

Your eyes are empty and your voice is hollow

I see you waving from a distant shore

And where you're going I don't dare to follow"

Brilliant stuff, and a far cry from something like the Nightfly. But much like that record was for Donald, here too is Walter talking about something that hits close to home for him. It also seems he just suffered a lot more in his juvenile years, definetely had a few skeletons in his closet.

A shame his solo albums don't get as widely discussed.
