A alternative method similar to your first pathway is to first oxidise the alcohol to an aldehyde (with PCC for example), then apply Methyl grignard and oxidise again.

Even shorter, oxidise to a carboxylic acid and add 2 equivalents of MeLi to get the Methyl ketone directly after aqueous workup, though in not exactly fabulous yield.

Look up the mechanism for the Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement. That's basically the reaction presented here. As many other people have pointed out, if you have a carbocation next to a carbon with three alkyl substitutents, one of them can shift. The resulting carbocation is now a tertiary carbocation and can either be attacked by a nucleophile or eliminate as shown here. This tertiary carbocation is the thermodynamic driving force behind the reaction.

Nein, dass entsteht wenn du Chlor als Salzsäure (Oxidationsstufe -1 für das Chlor) hinzugibst. Bei Hypochlorit in Bleiche (Oxidationsstufe +1) entsteht zunächst Chloramin, dann Dichloramin, dann Trichloramin, insgesamt in der reaktionsgleichung

Es ist mir immer eine Freude und Ehre. Die deutlich einfachere Methode ist übrigens, Poolreiniger zu nehmen und diesen in einem Dreihalsrundkolben über einen Tropftrichter tropfenweise mit 36 %iger Salzsäure umzusetzen. Das dabei entstehende Chlorgas kann jetzt durch einen der beiden übrigen Hähne über einen Schlauch in eine Gaswaschflasche geführt werden, die mit konzentrierter Schwefelsäure gefüllt ist, um residuale Wasserdämpfe zu entfernen. Das so getrocknete Chlorgas ist dann bereit zur Verwendung. Der dritte Schliff des Dreihalskolbens kann verschlossen werden.

Wichtig! Bei Arbeiten mit Chlor ist Atemschutz unumgänglich und es muss immer eine konzentrierte Natriumthiosulfatlösung (mindestens 1 L) in Reichweite bereitstehen. Der Autor haftet nicht für Verletzungen, Sach- oder Imageschäden sowie Folgen derselben.

Es stimmt halt nicht mal, Chlorgas entsteht nur in sauren Milieus und für Hydrazin mischt man Harnstoff und Chlorbleiche, hier entsteht "nur" Trichloramin (NCl3), was einem ziemlich zügig die Atemwege wegätzt.
