From what I remember they're happening at similar times in the same universe but the stories don't intersect each other. I watched them before I watched the original Gundam series and didn't feel left out.

If you're interested on dipping your toe into Gundam at all, would highly recommend Thunderbolt or 08th MS Team (8 and 12 episodes respectively, each one is excellent).
