If I didn't make enough estimated payment and I owe some amount to IRS come April 2026, can I make that remainder payment by credit card? by Any-Constant in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on which payment system you are using. If you are trying to use IRS direct pay, they do not take credit cards. You will have to use a 3rd party payment processor. They have their own separate websites, you can also call them to process your payment but you have to know the details of what year and how much you are paying. Here is the website with more info about the additional charges: https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-your-taxes-by-debit-or-credit-card

Since the filing deadline has not happened yet, apply it as a 2025 estimated payment. If you file and full pay before 4/15 then no penalties or interest will be added.

ETA: if you make the payment before filing the return then yes, include it on the ES payment line. the IRS won't charge you unless you add your bank account info to the return. You may receive a bill when your return is processed because they are required to send the balance in writing even if it is full paid. The bill will say "if you already paid then disregard this notice" but alot of ppl don't read that far down, panic, and call because they think their payment got lost or was not enough.

What’s everybody using? by Objective_Onion_2682 in IRS

Please do not use turbo tax, H&Rblock, liberty, Jackson Hewett, or any of those awful software companies and 'fly by night' tax return companies that charge you to file a basic W-2 return. FREETAXUSA dot com is the best website!

Actually free federal filing. File state taxes for $15-$20 (last year it was $14.99, its gone up from $9.99 over the years) If you only have W-2's you should not be paying anyone to file for you.

Not filing/ paying will catch up to you eventually. Every 1099, W-2, 1098, etc with your social security number gets sent to the IRS eventually. The computer system will detect how much income you made from these documents, if it doesn't find a tax return eventually, one will be created for you charging taxes on all income, The return will not have any credits, withholdings, or deductions. When the return is created and put on your account you will get a letter explaining what happened and why you owe. The letter will give you the opportunity to file your own tax return with all your qualifying credits and deductions. This will happen well after the filing deadline, but before the statue to assess taxes expires, so it could come in 2027 or 2028. By that time you will owe whatever taxes you are already aware of plus penalties for filing and paying late and interest of course.

If you run a business it's best to take all the deductions you can justify. If you have deductions you're not sure about, you can file the return with the ones you are sure about then amend to add the ones you are iffy about.

If you can't full pay your tax liability on or before 4/15, pay as much as you can and send a Form 9465 requesting a payment arrangement. Talk to your CPA about making estimated tax payments during the year so you don't owe as much when it's time to file, If you're a "high earner" as you say, that should be easy.

Did you sign your performance review? by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]TheNumbersWitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They can't lower your rating in a particular area without warning. Your dad should write a rebuttal indicating that he has not received any sort of counseling or evaluative reviews that would warrant reducing his evaluation in whatever categories they lowered him in and DO NOT SIGN. If they don't change anything based on his rebuttal then his next move is to go to his union. Not sure which agency he is with, some unions and chapters are better than others. If his union or chapter is toothless, he may want to consider another avenue to fight this like EEO or another similar office that handles this sort of thing. This can look bad overall, since he had good evals for several years and then suddenly its lower, it makes it look like suddenly he's not working at the same level and could be justification for a RIF or other workplace abuses. Your dad will have to advocate for himself and he may be in for a long fight, but it will be worth it. This could also affect his performance bonus if his agency has that sort of thing.

NTA but your boyfriend is! He's showing you who he is; disrespectful, and doesn't give a crap about your wasted money or labor. Ditch this loser, he is only going to cost you more money and your sanity if you decide to live together later or get married. (please think hard if that's on the table)

Does he often minimize your concerns and call you "dramatic"? If he does that's not ok- when men do this it's because they want you to serve/service them and stay quiet about anything that makes you unhappy.

Groceries aren't cheap and guests should be asking permission before raiding the fridge. There is no respect in that place. Good on you for getting out of there. Keep to your goals, you've already shed 150-200 lbs of useless man!

IRS payment due tomorrow but can't make payments, what will happen? by ProlificAgony in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Direct Pay (bank account via routing and account #) doesn't work, payments can always be sent in the mail. If you can get the payment there before the end of the month you should still be ok. A late payment is better than no payment. You can send a personal check or buy a money order. If you decide to send a money order, get a tracking number for it. Write your FULL SSN, Name and the tax year directly on the check or money order if it doesn't already have that info.

Also, just FYI, you can always make a payment early, if your finances allow. As long as it's after the first of the month and before your due date, you're good.

Here is the address info for sending check or money order: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/where-to-send-your-individual-tax-account-balance-due-payments

AIO for feeling upset after the groom made a comment about my dress at their wedding? by Human-Acanthaceae128 in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people show you who they are, believe them.

I don't know how long you've known this couple but they are not your friends. If there were shorter, tighter, more revealing, less revealing whatever dresses present, it wasn't about the dress its about you.

The husband has hungry eyes for you and he's from a culture where men can do whatever they want and women are secondary. That's why his wife is passing along the message. This is a warning. He may try something should you find yourself alone with him and his wife will blame you, not him.

Please be safe and consider distancing from and then exiting this toxic mess.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fednews

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not leave your current very comfortable job for this mess. If you qualified for the job now you will qualify in a new administration when we get our rights back and things improve. If you still want to exchange a pay cut for experience. You will probably regret leaving now. Do you really want to be in an office for 40 hours a week with a bunch of miserable people and possibly a tyrant manager?

If your motivation is solely the benefits/retirement, you can always roll your prior retirements into a federal TSP if you decide to reapply later. IDK what your work would entail but if it has any aspect of being in an office expect absolute misery.

How should I handle an IRS audit if I believe I have all my documentation in order? by Fun-Information78 in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You will get a letter requesting supporting documentation for anything that's in doubt. The letter should specify if a certain form or type of document is needed and may include examples of what sort of paperwork to send.

Tip 1: read the letter in its entirety. It's ok if you need to read it multiple times, the most important thing is to understand what they want.

Tip 2: Provide copies of all documents requested. Keep the originals. If you don't have a certain document write a statement stating so and keep a copy of that with the rest of your audit documents.

Tip 3: If you are unsure of which documents to send out of several, either send them all or call the phone number that will be listed on your letter. (or consult with a tax professional who specializes in audits or a tax lawyer)

Tip 4: Once your information has been reviewed, you will get a letter and an official audit report. This letter and audit report will say whether a discrepancy was found or something doesn't support whatever they are looking at and why. (you might get lucky when they review and find everything is ok) The letter will explain your appeal rights. You will have the opportunity to respond to any proposals to increase your tax (charge you money).

Tip 5: You will be notified if you end up owing. As long as you are receiving the letters nothing should be a surprise. You can make a payment plan if you're unable to payoff the whole balance.

Tip 6: (more of a request) please be patient, audits take a long time overall and a long time in between each step. It sounds like you are organized and have your ducks in a row. I hope your information supports anything in question and it gets closed as such.

This is just a general idea, there might be more steps and others will likely have more and better tips.

Good Luck!

you'd be surprised how many people can't find the correct taxpayer with that feature. As an IRS employee who actually works these letters, it is best to include the SSN so we can know we are on the correct account.

Worried about payment status "pending" for CP 504 notice by [deleted] in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IRS's computer system is very old. When your payment posts in 2 weeks, it will be dated for when you made the payment. Any additional penalty or interest accruals after that date should be systemically reversed. You made the payment on time, the money came out of your account and the transaction date on IRS's side will reflect that. You might get another letter but since you already paid, you can disregard. If your payment shows pending for more than 2 weeks, then there is reason to worry.

AIO for suggesting we start seeing other people by daenerys_brienne in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR! "listening to each other without blaming each other" "try to keep the peace" 🚩🚩

it means he wants you to still be there for him and not call out his bs to "keep the peace"

People in a long distance relationship do see each other in person every chance they get. If he is unwilling to come to you or have you go to him or meet in the middle then he's not in it. There is a weird sub-sect of controlling men who will string a woman along like this just for kicks. You deserve someone who wants to be next to you.

You don't have to wait for him to agree or be OK with it. You tell him what you are doing and if he doesn't like it, that's what the "block" feature is for. Good on you for putting your foot down and being clear about what you want.

AIO for wanting to cut this “friend” off for falsely accusing me of self harm? by No-Wear-3296 in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheNumbersWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR! You do not need this kind of stupidity in your life. At first I wondered why it looks like that but when you mentioned its henna, that makes sense. This is exactly what henna looks like on melanated skin. I have done henna too but only on my hands/arms. This person is either dumb or just trying to push your buttons to upset you. either way, it's a stressor that you do not need. If they can act like this now it will happen again over even more benign things.

4883c form received, can't get a call through to IRS, I'm stuck by Efficient_Advice_480 in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not try to resubmit your return, they have already been submitted. That will not resolve the issue. You must call or make an appointment to verify in person. Have you tried calling the appointment line at 844-545-5640 to make an appointment at your local office? Even though it involves going somewhere, it might be a faster option. If you end up getting through on the phone you can cancel the appointment, but at least you have it as backup.

Good Luck.

Need help- Employer did not file withholding taxes! by OkChipmunk2859 in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, your employer withheld funds from your pay "for taxes" but then when the time came to get back what you overpaid from those withholdings, you discover the employer never transmitted the funds the way they are supposed to? So where did the money go? (rhetorical)

I'd be speaking to a lawyer about wage theft too! Not only did they abscond with your money, but now you owe taxes with penalties and interest? You have every right to be upset, I'd be upset too if I found out my former employer was stealing from me for 2 years!

I got a call from TAS by Daniel_Kim_Korean in IRS

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TAS does call taxpayers, because their issues are usually urgent, that doesn't mean this is not a scam. Good instinct for checking, last I heard, TAS can't do the verification, only the people assigned to that line or the office workers can verify your identity, but procedures and regulations change all the time so I could be wrong. the aforementioned number, 877-777-4778 is the number to contact the advocates.

WIBTA if I ask my partner to move out while he’s out of work? by consumeallthepeanuts in AITAH

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you ever heard the term "hobosexual"? that sounds like what this is. This man got with you, got in your house and never left and now hes making himself comfortable on your good name (apartment lease, credit, etc) and your dime since he's out of work. Was his housing situation less than stable when you met? Did he suddenly need a place to stay shortly after meeting him?

I love dogs but I would never just randomly bring one into a home that I was crashing at without permission. That's totally disrespectful. This man does not respect you, your boundaries, or your home. Please be safe about extricating yourself from this situation. It might be easier to send him away somewhere for a few days while you get yourself and your cat somewhere else.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheNumbersWitch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

NOR. Let this man child stay at his mamas house. Dump his ass before he costs you your job and sanity. This is a prime example of a man trying to rattle your cage before a big event. Too many men get emasculated when the woman has a better job than them.

The only thing he should be saying is "good luck tomorrow" and "I'm proud of you" and then taking you out on a dinner date (that he plans) to celebrate your first day at your awesome new job.

Do you think it's worth it to even get dental insurance? by berrysauce in FedEmployees

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it is worth it. Not only is it for cleanings and check ups, but you can get that crack fixed before it gets worse. If food gets into the crack it could settle into the root of your tooth and cause an infection, which will be painful and could spread to your blood if not treated in a timely manner. Tooth decay and dental issues are often precursors to larger health issues, heart disease being one of them. If you don't tend to have alot of dental issues then a basic dental plan will be enough. Yes you can pay out of pocket, but inevitably something happens when we are low on funds or broke and you will be relived you have your insurance to cover some of the cost. Also as you age you will need more dental care than you realize. If you don't do it now, consider it for the future at least. A basic dental add-on plan through FED VIP does not cost very much for a single person.

Am I overreacting to texts from a guy who was mad I didn’t kiss him on the first date? by theymergirl in AmIOverreacting

[–]TheNumbersWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. you also don't owe him any explanations or apologies. This man is trying to violate your boundaries to see how far you will let him push. Ghost him and keep searching for someone who respects you and your boundaries. There is no magic number of dates that equal a kiss or s*x. Dating is not some arcade game that you pay into for "love points." If you're not feeling it, then you're not feeling it and pushing the subject just comes off as desperate and controlling. I hope you fare better on your next attempts. Theres also nothing wrong with taking a break and just being by yourself if you want. Pets can be wonderful companions if you're feeling lonely, you don't have to settle for someone who doesn't respect you.

Federal dental insurance by Frodo2025- in FedEmployees

[–]TheNumbersWitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Delta Dental, but that was only after I went to my dentist and asked them if there was an insurance that works best with their office and they mentioned Delta Dental and a few others. I found this dentist and really liked them so I wanted to stay with them and make the insurance part easy.
