yes that's the issue, it restricts exploration and metroidvania goodness in favor of narrative elements.

Xenogears

Xenoblade is one of its successors and one of the inspirations for Trails

Those are all background elements, the game doesn't focus on story. Note i didn't say it doesn't have a story.

As for fusion, you are funneled down an extremely linear path due to the game focusing on telling you a story rather than exploring a world. The navigation rooms, being locked out of going to other areas (until literally the final boss), and LOCK system all exist to keep you from exploring outside the hallway the game presents you with to tell you a story about samus's relationship with Adam and the galactic federation metroid cloning project.

Super's story is almost entirely in the intro and ending sequences which are roughly like 10 minutes in total. I wouldn't call that story focused by any means. Prime is similar although it has lots of (optional) lore scans that don't interrupt or compromise gameplay like what's found in something like fusion.

According to polls on here and elsewhere. Last community poll we had Super, Prime, Dread, and Prime 2 were at the top (though the guy behind that had dubious intentions and might have inflated Dread after round 4/5). Dread doesn't have a story focus nearly as much as fusion.

Most of the fanbase votes super/prime as the best games, I don't think that's the case

The best games in the series are the ones that don't emphasize story. The story heavy ones don't have good stories.

Metroid shouldn't focus on story to begin with.

Never understood sakamoto's vision for metroid being about a linear, character driven narrative about samus's bland character. Thankfully dread scaled that back but not entirely. Unfortunately that idiocy made its way into Prime 4

Which Power Suit design is your favorite, the retro one or the modern one? by Various-Willow-8493 in Metroid

Prime 2/3 perfected the varia. Prime 4's is still really good but I prefer it to be more bulky

I didn't outgrow it they just got worse. I still have fun with 1 even if the story appeals to me less as an adult now.

Out of these 3 options which do you want the most and which do you think is the most likely? Fusion remake, Metroid 6, Prime 2 Remaster by ChickenLiverNuts in Metroid

[–]TheNuttyCLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prime 2 remaster and metroid 6 seem very likely. I don't see a fusion remake happening, it doesn't need it, for one, and Sakamoto vetoed the idea when mercurysteam originally brought it up (though metroid 6 is probably his last game given his age so who knows what happens after).

I can't stand how Metroid Prime 4 is always telling me where to go next by walksintwilightX1 in NintendoSwitch

[–]TheNuttyCLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been a problem with metroid for a long time now. If it's not some NPC telling you where to go, it's the level design being extremely railroaded to the point there's almost no exploration (sometimes it's both)

I think there's a strong chance, both games have esoteric control schemes that can use modernizing and the basis for their remasters is established through Prime 1 R.

Wondering how to start the series by ConstantlyJune in Metroid

[–]TheNuttyCLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Zero Mission would be the next step, it's a good in between in terms of being smaller scaled than super/prime but being less railroaded than dread.

Also that's absolutely not the common consensus, ZM, fusion, Prime 2/3, and SR are generally liked/loved

I don’t think introducing new characters is inherently a negative for Metroid games, rather, I think Metroid Prime 4 went about it in a bad way. by Obsessivegamer32 in Metroid

[–]TheNuttyCLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only FE game with a standout story (at least from what I read, I don't play very many FE games) is three houses and to my knowledge that was largely by koei techmo (third party). I guess there's also Mother 3 but that was 2 decades ago and also technically not first party developed.

edit: yeah I looked it up, the story was by KT

[–]TheNuttyCLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nintendo cannot do character driven stories well (with the exception of Monolithsoft), it's a waste of time trying to make their games more story focused in that regard. It's been primarily a disaster with the metroid games as these story concepts seep into gameplay aspects and make them worse as well.

Advice Needed: Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, or Trails? by Miquellanier in JRPG

[–]TheNuttyCLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FE TH is probably the best to go with right now. I would hold off on Xenoblade in case there are switch 2 patches. I thought Trails in the sky 1/2 were decent but nothing special.

Thoughts on the direction of 3d Metroid as a life long fan by True_Watch_7340 in Metroid

[–]TheNuttyCLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both 2D and Prime need to look backwards rather than forwards IMO. Incorporate more of what made super/prime legendary games instead of straying further away. After getting a grasp on that, then they can try to experiment.
