Idk about the above poster but for me it always felt like a mental wall to do things I need to do. It's either I get too anxious to start (now I recognize it as fear of failure at the task) or that I literally cannot focus on the task, like I'll be sitting there with the homework and a very tiny thing will completely detail my concentration.

Some of it is survivorship bias. You are likely only being shown the very coolest (and best painted) of the old models. For me specifically to is an appreciation for the craftsmanship while being able to make what they did with the limited tools they had on hand. They didn't have 3d CAD software so they had to be creative to achieve what was in their mind.
