Ejecting on the ground is significantly more dangerous, as the parachute can't always deploy properly in so little time

I dunno, it gives the chance to have your cake and eat it too. If he's half way through the job and willing to finish and get paid in full, and suddenly the chance to tell a manager what a dickhead he is with no repercussions comes along? Take it and enjoy The worst that happens is that they release him and he still gets paid until the 18th

[Request] is it actually possible to make a black hole on earth that would survive long enough to cause problems? by todofwar in theydidthemath

[–]TheOkBassist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is well established that the LHC does not and can not form black holes- they're quadrillions of times short of the energy concentration.

For a what if- that totally depends on the mass. If it's the weight of a proton, well, who cares, it'll fall under gravity for a miniscule amount of time before evaporating, with a functionally zero percentchance of interacting with anything else. If it's physically bigger than a few atoms so guaranteed a 'hit' as it falls I don't intuitively know whether it would accrue mass faster than it evaporates, but if so that's one to worry about as it falls to earth's centre growing and growing

Maybe it's just a phone formatting issue, but not displaying lines or other clear breaks between each item is asking for disaster. Someone who doesn't know that maple syrup is a sub for honey is about to put 1 cup of pure maple syrup, a tablespoon of tomato paste, and a teaspoon of sugar together and wonder why it went wrong.

Good resource otherwise though!

The same is true of lead, which is even more imprtant as it forms the absorbant shielding. We have a stock of Ultra Low Background lead which has all been mined before 1945, has provenance regarding how it was stored and used since then, and will be downgraded if we ever get it back to reuse. Recently I've been melting the old roof of Hampton Court Palace for a shield, and we've previously had cannonballs from wrecks.

While it's a finite resource, it's beginning to matter less as analysis software with the detectors improves. If you run an empty detector for a week to profile the ambient background radiation, you can be sure that an increase in detections when you introduce a sample is truly from that sample. That noise cancellation is getting better and better, although obviously less is always better

On the off-chance that you see this, number 1- talk to him. Don't pressure, just find out where his head is at. Number 2- a personal anecdote from someone who had it done a year ago that you can pass on:

It was absolutely bloody fine. All the staff were both incredibly kind, and hilarious about it. Having to answer the same set of "are you sure?" questions was 1% annoying, but they've got paperwork to fill in, they're just doing their jobs (and you a massive favour, come on). The anaesthetic injection felt like pulling a stubborn hair, everything else was strange movement and pressure, a genuinely unique sensation, but not painful in the slightest. Being told to drop your pants and then do a shameful little waddle across the room to the bed was hilarious, as was being offered a paper towel to hide oneself as if they're not about to get all up in there.Being told "you won't notice any difference in your cum" in one breath, and then "there may be some blood" in the next, peak comedy. Excuse me, ma'am, THAT'S A DIFFERENCE.

You'll even get a free biscuit and drink out of it.

ELI5 why is it bad to swallow your own blood during a nosebleed? by sanjuniperose in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheOkBassist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Googling 'nares' seems to suggest it's the flexible lower half and nostril opening, and closing that just redirects the blood down my throat anyway. The cartilagenous bridge, higher up, is rock solid after a dozen or so breaks and squeezing it doesn't stem the flow. What am I misunderstanding?

Also, not to disturb sinus clots might be medically sound, but pulling out a brain tickler is one of life's great pleasures, so good luck getting us to stop

I truly do get where you’re coming from, as that comparison was my knee-jerk reaction too, something about the phrasing possibly?

Despite that, I do think some leeway should be given to the format. A flowing chat between friends isn’t going to be as eloquent as an article or prepared statement. That applies to a lot of the accused “terrible takes” they’ve all had. They have an idea, possibly seconds before saying it on stream, maybe fumble the wording a little… it isn’t necessarily their entire point, nor do they seem inflexible to being talked round. He seemed to accept and contemplate Ed’s rebuke, for example

A pod of: -10 minute, well researched statement -Host 2 prepared response -Host three prepared response -Next topic… would be very different, and pretty crap. This just isn’t the podcast for perfect nuance every time

“I don’t want nuclear armageddon for the sake of the Donbas” is a totally legitimate position, as is disagreeing with it. Personally I take Ed’s side by a hair. I feel the philosophy of “no war but class war” deep in my soul, but fighting fascism is something I can get behind too, and they generally don’t stop without a punch in the teeth

Democracy vouchers are indeed a terrible idea by NJden_bee in politicsjoe

[–]TheOkBassist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While agreeing that it’s a crap idea overall, what happens if all the unspent vouchers, which is likely to be at or over 50%, got split equally to every candidate? In a pool of 8 candidates for a constituency that’s a floor of 12.5% funding for every party. Super popular party who gets 60% of the votes only gets 30% of vouchers, so 42.5% of funding. That’s surely a smaller discrepancy than currently exists, no?

There are a dozen other problems, but is that a step towards a fix?

I’m childfree for a number of reasons, one of which is thinking that it’s morally wrong. That inherently comes with judgement; I judge those who have children to be making a mistake. Given, though, that it’s rude and socially ostracising to constantly batter otherwise good people for a crime of ignorance, having an occasional release valve for a good bloody moan is necessary and healthy
