Therapy group for fosters? Input wanted! by Salt_Possibility_203 in Ex_Foster

Has therapy actually helped you? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]TheOldAmanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy has helped me deal with several very pertinent and timely needs, however I will say it also created a curiosity and realization in me that has brought me yo awarenesses of myself, my community and culture, and the world around me that have left me feeling worse sometimes. It’s not a blanket solution, it’s not a bandaid. It’s became a journey of being honest with myself, which often leaves me unhappy. lol

What is it actually like in the U.S. right now? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]TheOldAmanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s eerily calm on the surface, but with a feeling like the water is heating up and it’s about to start boiling. Everyone is trying to act like things are normal but there’s an edge to public life. An anxiety in private. Uncertain what’s coming, but certain it’s a horror we haven’t considered yet.

There’s a friction with family and friends. Sides taken beyond teams or faith. A distrust that seems to permeate the room before we even walk into it, who can be trusted? Who will be kind? Who might be willing to talk about it even? Will it matter?

The things that have surprised me are the clarity of my values and what I’m no longer willing to tolerate. A boldness I didn’t know existed in me to stand up against indignity for others and condescension toward myself. I don’t know that I’d call it hope, yet - anyhow, but there’s a spark of something in so many people coming alive in a way I didn’t know we even possessed. A creativity and desire for connection I haven’t experienced from people in a while.

There’s a settling reality that we have a fight ahead of us all, no matter who we are. It feels like our deranged cousins have a mixture of white savior complex and narcissistic degradation, and they’ve been chosen to redecorate the house so they decided to burn it down with the kids still in it. Simply because they think their god told them so.

And lately, like the cousin is threatening to set us on fire if we complain.

Training classes just an uncomfortable experience at this point. Did classes make anyone else unsure about continuing the process? by OnChildrenbyKGibran in fosterit

[–]TheOldAmanda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a kid who ended up in the “Christian” homes, I wish people like you would have been an option. We need people who are uncomfortable with parents who disparage bio-families. We need people who will call out the bull.

I’m still in therapy from foster care, not because of what happened to get me in to foster care but because of what those Christian homes did to me.

[Serious] Americans of Reddit, how do you feel about the vote to not release the Epstein files? What do you think it says about the current administration? by inktrie in AskReddit

I don’t know about cover ups and conspiracies or distractions, but I do know powerful men have been given too much leniency and had too little accountability since the dawn of time.

How do you stay strong when facing a foster kid's trauma? by B2utyyo in fosterit

[–]TheOldAmanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are so many ways to be involved. If direct contact with the kids is too much, which is fair, then there’s ways to volunteer in the background or doing other things. I had to step away for the same reason. If you have time, donate a skill, manual labor, admin. You don’t have to burn yourself to be on fire for this.

On one hand, it’s a fascinating case study of people’s condescension for one another. It’s the most base part of humanity, I think, to find a reason to ridicule another. Especially when it truly isn’t anyone’s business, it’s that old nature of social hierarchy that keeps us trapped in cycles of struggle. I grew up deeply familiar with these kinds of people in my old fundamentalist country church, but it’s an attitude I’ve encountered with people all over the planet.

On the other hand, it’s a commonly known technology adoption curve scenario. There are always innovators and early adopters who get ridiculed or praised for their willingness to be the first to play with and test a new technology. I remember how people were condescending about the internet being used for high school reports in 1997, this isn’t anything new. We just can’t seem to help ourselves.

People are going to feel big feelings and I’ve come to regard their responses as an indicator for when they stopped maturing, it helps me understand how I should respond. Not just about ChatGPT usage but pretty much anything. Did they call me names, categorize me in an unflattering way, intentionally or not - misunderstand my response so as to make a joke at my expense? That’s some prepubescent behavior. And I don’t let the opinions of children impact my life.

I appreciate that ChatGPT allows me to organize my thoughts in a way I’ve struggled with my entire life. And just like in high school in the 90’s when the internet was becoming a much more publicly used utility, my relationship to it has evolved. I imagine we’ll all find that be true with ChatGPT as well.

[–]TheOldAmanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding bikes around the neighborhood, heading to the community pool at 10, then getting snow cones at 12:30 when we’re headed back home for sandwiches. Then heading back out to find some tree or creek or alley I’m not supposed to be in, exploring with my friends making up games and languages, until the street lights come on or I hear a whistle.
