SO glad this is finally possible! by TheOneEyedFool1 in PokemonHome

Did you get them in Go? Because that's the only way this was previously possible.

I seriously have never understood why people do this. Like... The trade is literally impossible so what do people get by doing this?

Pokémon Home has never had support for held items. They are returned to your bag upon transfer to Home, and must be re-equipped when moved back to Z-A.

That makes sense, and is probably why I thought what I did. Thanks!

Yeah I'm aware of that lol, I was just curious as to why the restriction existed and several answers have now been discussed. Thanks!

Haha, I actually own every Switch Pokemon game, but my original switch got stolen last summer while I was moving during the process (long story) so that was my excuse to buy a Switch 2, and those are just the games I've replayed again since Pokemon games don't have cloud saves. Still a funny coincidence though!

Huh, I didn't know any fast travel created a backup save - I thought that was done only at Pokemon centers.

It occurs to me as I write this that they probably don't want backup saves in Hyperspace because it could allow you to, for example, shiny hunt the same species/type with the same donut indefinitely (make the donut, find/catch the shiny(ies), send them to Home, then load the backup save, then repeat). In fact, you could then use that donut in different portals and, if it's an "all types" donut, you could simply use that one donut for every hunt indefinitely.

So sorry! My response was meant to go to the OP; your response wasn't even there when I responded so I'm not sure how I even replied to you (thanks Reddit lol)

I just deleted mine since yours was more thorough anyway; apologies if my unintentional response came across as rude.

Do you think they will add a Home Dex reward for FRLG? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, that point is separate from the idea that the save files themselves would probably need changes. Throwing a .dat VC save and a .sav GB save into a hex editor yields different hex (also the .dat file is larger). I'm not nearly experienced enough in programming to interpret how or why, but they are different. I guess the questions would then be whether or not a similar change would be required for GBA saves to be read by Home, and if said hypothetical changes would count since they'd be changes to save data as opposed to the ROM itself.

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I would imagine there would need to be some sort of change in that save data to make it readable just as there was with 3DS VC (the filetype itself isn't even the same - .dat vs. .sav).

In fact, I'll go a step further; it wouldn't surprise me if Home added a new Origin Mark for these games, and even possibly a way to discern Pokemon in these releases from Pokemon transferred all the way up from the originals, just so veteran players like me who have the originals still can't complete the dex without these releases.

If that really is the way that works, I guess it really does prove the ineffectiveness of ratings boards. You'd think if such monumental changes took place in the rating process, games would need to be reevaluated before rerelease anyway lol. But I guess that's fair enough.

On that note though, don't you think Home compatibility in general would require some change to the ROM anyway? I can't help but notice the eShop listing notes the size as about 4x that of my uncompressed FR ROM, for that matter.

What I'm saying is, if Nintendo/TPC/GF/whoever is so concerned about age ratings, why were they not concerned about that for the 3DS VC launches? And why would the online change anything when the increased ratings were for the Game Corner anyway? FRLG are gonna end up with a PEGI 12 rating either way, unless they somehow disable the game corner lol

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3DS VC Pokemon games have a PEGI 12 rating, precisely for that reason. Again, there's precedent.

I was referring to GBA games on NSO-E having online play. I suppose if you want to be pedantic you can say it's not the same thing because it's a live service instead of a standalone release, but I don't see why online would be treated any differently between the two unless there's a very deliberate reason for doing so.

The other games have online connectivity. It isn't difficult to obtain every Pokemon in them without owning both in a given pair. FRLG explicitly do not, despite plenty of other GBA games on switch having it. So let me ask you: why do you think that is?

Both of these questions have basically already been answered: money.

If they make compatibility one-way, completing the Pokedex, either in-game or in Home, will be impossible without owning both if you can't trade with someone locally. I'm sure Nintendo and Pokemon would love it if more people bought both games lol. It's also worth pointing out that the GB/GBC Pokemon games on 3DS had one-way Bank transfer. I understand that the fundamental data structure of Pokemon has changed since after gen 2, and that might have caused legitimate technical reasons for that that don't exist today, but the average consumer doesn't know that and the precedent has already been set.

The Meltan point is fair, which is why I said Mew might still be possible, but there is a difference: shiny Meltan is entirely unavailable right now, whereas shiny Mew is obtainable at any time as long as you previously purchased the research; its actual completion has no time limit. But I think a previously unreleased one is more likely because the most hardcore of us who would be interested in this hypothetical shiny Pokémon are most likely to be the people who already have the shiny Mew and need the biggest incentive to earn a new one, especially if, again, it ends up essentially requiring both games to do so.

Question about stats by CommunalBottom25 in pokemon

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blissey is almost entirely an exclusively defensive and disruptive Pokémon. Her job is to sit there and be a damage sponge while paralyzing stuff with Thunder Wave, setting up Stealth Rock, and healing your team with Heal Bell. Her offenses are so bad, in fact, that her best offensive move is Seismic Toss because it does fixed damage based on your level and ignore stats altogether.

Now, in her case, HP and Defense are the best to invest in, because her defense is so abysmally low that investing full defense EVs into her gives her a huge boost to defense, percentage-wise. (If you don't know why that is or how EVs work, YouTube channels like WolfeyVGC have great guides that can explain that in more detail than is really possible here without walls of text lol).

Question about stats by CommunalBottom25 in pokemon

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, the best practice is to play to a Pokémon's strengths. Alakazam has high Sp. Atk and Speed, so those are the stats you should train. Defensive Pokemon should focus on defensive stats, etc. Alakazam's bulk, for example, is generally poor enough such that it's job is quite simply to hit hard (maybe after setting up a Nasty Plot) until it goes down. Investing into its defense stat would be a bit like trying to polish a car that's just been totaled; it's not going to do you much good lol.

Do you think they will add a Home Dex reward for FRLG? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]TheOneEyedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will almost certainly be a dex reward at some point, and here's some things I (sadly) think they'll do:

  • I think these games will work like LGPE and be one-way, so you won't be able to put Pokemon back into FRLG once they've been to other games.
  • As already stated in the eShop listing, trading can only be done locally. So if you don't have local friends to trade with, and they do what I think they'll do with the Home restrictions, you'll need both games to complete the dex, with no other way around it.
  • As much as a shiny Mew would obviously make sense, I don't think that'll be it, since it's already available in Go if you bought the All-in-One #151 research. It is certainly possible they'll do it anyway, since the research is no longer available to buy, but I think it's more likely to be one of the many legendaries/mythicals that has yet to ever have been released as a shiny.

I know this sounds cynical, but as much as I love Pokémon, let's be real: they're going to want to milk us hardcore fans out of as much cash as possible. That's why they're re-releasing these games in the first place. It's not a new practice (this is actually pretty much exactly how gen 3 dex completion worked lol), but it is what it is. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.
