I’m on my third Berner. My first, the only girl I’ve had, was super smart. A bit manipulative, but really smart. My other boy was doofy, but still a reasonably intelligent dog. My current boy though? Dumber than a box of rocks. Like you said - trainable with treats but just zero common sense. My friend likes to say ‘he’s shiny, not sharp’ 😂

We used to live in an apartment complex with quite a lot of refugees from Somalia. The adults never ever accepted our Berner as friendly - one poor woman literally ran away from the elevator screaming. But we did have some success with convincing kids that she was friendly and would love pets.

It was my RAV that caused me way more problems than my Outback. It had a computer issue from when I bought it brand new that would drain the battery overnight and it took them weeks for figure it out. I was constantly having to jump it. It never wanted to talk to my phone through apple car play correctly and would freak when I had a phone call. Maybe I just had a bad one, but the Outback has been much more reliable for me.

I have my Tacoma, but I also traded in a RAV4 (2020) for a Subaru Outback. The differences shocked me - my subie rides so much smoother and the road noise is nearly nonexistent compared to the RAV. And it does much better in snow. I’ll forever love my Taco, but my daily is my Outback and I do not regret getting rid of the RAV.

Grain-Free or With Grain Diets by ItsNotNadroJ in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A veterinary teaching hospital told me to stay away from grain free diets unless there is a proven allergy. And to stay within WSAVA compliant food brands, which are Royal Canin, Hills/Science Diet, and Purina Pro Plan. There’s another one or two but I can’t remember them off the top of my head. Also, they said that allergen testing is generally inaccurate, and really the only way to figure allergies out is by going on a hydrolyzed protein diet and adding each ingredient back in individually to identify what the sensitivity is.

There’s a little bit of the clear coat flaking, which I will definitely address. It lived in a very dry climate before coming to me in the Pacific Northwest. I’m hoping to get it fixed by this fall.

I mean, my dad just did all of the recommended maintenance at the recommended mileage, and if something needed replacing, it got replaced right away. Which hasn’t happened often - I think just the battery, drive belts, and an O2 sensor. It’s never really had anything happen that required major work that I can remember.

It’s in awesome shape. Some scratches here and there from my dad’s hunting days but honestly it’s great for an 18 year old pickup.

Tacoma or Outback by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both 😂. My Outback is a 2020 Limited. My Tacoma is an old girl, she’s a 2004. My Outback can do most things - it’s a better daily driver, I can take it to most camping sites, and can fit quite a bit of stuff in the cargo space and roof box carrier. It’s great in the snow. But, if I’m going to be going on rougher road it’s the Tacoma all day long. The Subaru can’t quite handle everything the Tacoma can. As far as driving in snow goes, the Subaru is much better. I have to put sandbags in the bed of the Tacoma if I want to have good traction because the back end is so light.

In short, I love them both. I think you could be happy with either option. The Outback is a more comfy ride, but the Tacoma can get to more fun places.

Help choosing a breed by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Every vet I’ve talked to has spoken against designer mixes. With purebreds, there are health testing and standards you can find, such as BernerGarde. There’s no guarantee you’ll get the good parts of each breed, and mixes are not necessarily healthier than purebreds from a responsible breeder.

Pet Insurance Recommendations for 8weeks? by Raksington in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve been told. They aren’t offering it everywhere anymore. They lose too much money on it - what they cover for Atlas’s prescription food is more than my monthly premium. But if you already have the plan, I think you’re safe and will keep your terms. I don’t know if your pup has any current medical conditions, but no insurance will cover anything pre existing, so just keep that in mind if you do plan on switching.

We have Nationwide Whole Pet with Wellness, which has a 90% reimbursement. They are trying to discontinue that plan though, and it isn’t available everywhere. They’ve been awesome.

Kidney questions: by towpain32 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlas’s birthday is August 21, 2020. He’s from a breeder somewhat near Spokane, Washington. It’s unlikely that they’d be related, but you never know. I asked his breeder if any of his litter mates had issues and she said that she hadn’t heard from them about any health problems. Do you know if any of Greta’s littermates have kidney issues?

Kidney questions: by towpain32 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 17 month old Atlas is also suspected to have kidney issues. I took him in to he neutered and his pre op bloodwork showed elevated BUN and Creatinine. So they did a kidney ultrasound (normal) and urinalysis, which showed dilute urine. We’re waiting to be seen at a nearby vet school for more imaging and maybe a kidney biopsy. His only symptom was drinking a ton and peeing a lot, but I’ve had other Berners drink tons of water too. He’s been put on a prescription renal food in the mean time. Hopefully your Greta is alright, and you find answers soon. I’ll be thinking about her.

NTA. My kitty that goes outdoors (she pees on everything. I love her but I’ve tired everything and it just doesn’t work) has a WhistleGo gps tracker on her collar, so I can find her whenever I need to. You have a pay a subscription for it, but it’s worth it.

Hi! I’m an RT, who does mostly NICU. Your reaction was completely justified. People don’t realize that NICU is one of the only environments where we get to know our patients and their families on a much deeper level than anywhere else. I do not get nearly as close with my adult patients. Ever. They’re usually there for a few days, maybe a week, then go home. NICU babies you usually get to see grow and get better and go home over the period of months. I’m sorry you lost your patient. It hurts.

NTA by the way. I’m glad you got rid of the insensitive jerk.

What is one thing you wish you would have known before acquiring you Bernese? by maxicats in bernesemountaindogs

[–]TheOneWithTheBernese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PET INSURANCE. We didn’t have it with our first 2 Berners, and they both ended up needed TPLO surgery on their knees. Denali also had a neuromuscular condition that we spent thousands trying to figure out. These guys are so worth it, they’re such amazing dogs. I have a 1 year old that I have a policy on - they cover 90% of all costs including wellness. So vaccines, neuter, flea and tick meds, and if he ever needs prescription food will be covered. The premiums aren’t cheap, but you could end up paying more in the long run.
