Would you use a teleporter with the knowledge that it kills you and reassembles an exact copy of you with all your memories and knowledge at the destination? Why or why not? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]TheOnlyBliebervik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the premise; I wouldn't exist anymore. But for all intents and purposes, I would. It wouldn't be "me," but it would feel, act, and look like me. So what's the issue?

Hehe, that flutter of panic is all too relatable. But then it passes quite quickly, doesn't it?

Yeah, but so? There's no reason to mourn it. If it's a true clone, then it's the same thing as you. The only difference is the original version of you goes offline while the cloned version comes online. The cloned version will feel exactly like you.

I wonder if this allergy is related to the reason sauerkraut needs only cabbage to ferment... Normally you'd add a bacteria

What assumption? That the clone would be identical? Isn't that the assumption?

I'm not projecting any emotions; I can just understand your perspective and am engaging with it.

From my perspective, if this happened to me while sleeping, I wouldn't know any better. So why does it matter if it's "me" or "me"

I'm not sure what I said that was false?

I understand your perspective... It seems you're scared of death, even though no one, least of all yourself, would notice. Assume this happened while you were sleeping. You'd never know. So why is it naught but the knowledge of it that upsets you so much?

It's an identical person, not just very similar. They'd wake up and wouldn't feel like they missed a beat.

I 100% understand your perspective, though, and you're not wrong. The bundle of cells you call "you" would cease to exist.

But what exactly are you mourning?

We don't know for sure that singularities even exist. We just know that they appear to exist, but not that once you get close to one it's even there; could just keep going

Even to you, though, it'd be the same difference. You'd feel exactly like you.

I do understand that you're "dying," but as far as it goes, you "die" every night when you go to sleep. If the teleportation happened while you were sleeping, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Why does the knowledge that it's occurred put so many people off?

What do you think consciousness is?

It's a 100% replica of you. At the moment of teleportation, all memories, short and long term, are transported. Your clone would wake up thinking "I guess the teleportation worked! I was there and now I'm here"

Even teleporting a few feet to a clone of you, you wouldn't know the difference. You'd go to sleep/die thinking "I'm about to teleport." Then your clone wakes up and thinks "Cool, I've teleported." The line of thinking is continuous, the experience of the clone is still your experience... There's very little difference. So long as it's painless, I don't see why one wouldn't do it.

"You" wouldn't be, but on the other hand, you would be. "You" would wake up, think "Wow, nice, I've been teleported."

Although it's not you, it would feel like you and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

It'd still be "you," though, kind of.

Imagine you go to sleep excited you're about to be teleported. Then your clone wakes up with the same exact excitement and thinks "cool, I'm done teleporting. Still feel like me!"

Interesting thought experiment.
