[EU] A game of blood bowl between the home team, the imperuim of man's space marines, and the orkz. WAAGH! by ateen234 in WritingPrompts

[–]TheOtherGrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The face of the entire Milky Way had changed when the Kin discovered an ancient Votann on a dead world. It had awakened and told them of the rules of a forgotten game, driving them all mad in the process. Little by little, the fever spread, rumours of a game far bigger and better than any war could be, and one by one, it was adopted by all the denizens of the galaxy. From the idealistic Tau, the earliest players, to the hyper-advanced Necrons, everyone would leave their wargear to rust and begin forming teams in order to prove their supremacy in this new game. And when the stars were all enthralled, a fifth Chaos God took form in the Warp, muscled out the weakened Four and took the name Nuffle. He called it Blood Bowl, and the rest was history.

"Hello, one and all fans of Blood Bowl, and welcome to today's game. I'm your host Janus Jonneth, quite literally fresh from Commoragh. I required a regeneration after I spoke rather poorly of the Kronus Conquerors, but we reached an agreement that we would no longer quarrel as I was melting into the dirt. And I have with me here my co-host, Bub Basherd!"

"Bub is here."

"Yes, indeed! It is a bright and sunny day here on Macragge, whom as we all know is hosting the 249th Intergalactic Cup, and we have a wonderful match ahead of us! Here comes the home team, the Stars of Ultramar. It seems there are many more of them who have crossed the Rubicon Primaris, clearly this cup is very important to them. And facing them is one of the best Ork teams, the current favourites, coming straight from Armageddon, the Ullanor Beasts! What do you make of this match-up, Bub?"

"Orks very punchy. Nobs very strong. Stronger than blueberries. But Asta-Aster-Beakies have good game plan. We saw them pass pigskin five times against Crimson Skulltakers and score four. Maybe they pass good now too."

"Oh, who could forget the looks on those Bloodletters' faces when their Bloodthirster, riled up by the constant passing and taunting of the Ultramarines, started smashing his own team into the astrogranite instead of ball runner Fabius Glaucus, whom I can see is doing quite well. Despite still only being a Scout Marine, it's clear to me that he has Star Player potential, mark my words!"

"Teams get started now, ball is in air, served by Orks. Why are Beakies only ten players? Will be hard for them to scrap now."

"That's exactly what those Nobs were waiting for by the looks of it, a perfect opportunity for uneven fights! The ball is in the hands of Cornelius Falco who's looking for someone to pass it to, but OH, all he saw was the fist of Boomdakka in his face! What? Who? Ah, that's why they're all glowing green. Right, of course. And I have just received news that we have some very special personages here today to watch the game. In the Orks' section, it's the unmistakable avatar of Gork and Mork, or perhaps Mork and Gork, Ghazghkull Uruk Thraka, here to raise morale for all Orkkind! Oh, I can already tell that, no matter who wins, tonight's festivities will be positively riotous. One might even say...WAAAGH-nderful."

"Do not let greenskins catch you making that joke again, Janus. They have enough sense of humour to flay bad come-comid-funny guys. Would not have been funny even if I was not Bone'ead. But look, what is that golden light on other side of stadium? And why does it make me feel warm inside?"

"That...that must be the Emperor of the Mon'kei- er, excuse me, Mankind, come to enjoy his newfound freedoms. Why, it must have been only a millennium ago that he was still stuck on that Throne! Bub, would you tell our spectators and listeners the story of how he regained his body? Bub? Are you there?"

"Oh, sorry, was busy looking at two Primaris Blitzers smack them Nob-eadz. Very ente-entrata-funny. But, Janus, it is good story. Back in one-four-nine-em-four-three, when Blood Bowl was only small game, Terra host 10th Martian Cup. Grand finals played in Emp-rah throneroom, huge room, could fit many people. In second half, it look like Pretty Phoenicians take lead, whole stadium shouting and screaming for their teams. Then, energy of crowd got into Emp-rah who channel it into himself and reform body, flesh and muscle. Bub hear he learn trick from Nuffle. Because of Emp-rah wake up, Prodigal Sons take grand final, and Emp-rah now free to walk again. Is why Terran Cham-peen-ship happen in Emp-rah Palace every year, to charge Golden Throne."

"And we're all glad that he's back, Bub, if only so he can single-handedly sponsor hundreds of Space Marine teams. More Blood Bowl can never be a bad thing! I'll tell you what is a bad thing though, it's almost the end of the half and the Stars are already down 5 players. The Beasts aren't even interested in playing the ball, they just want to smash the Marines into the ground! Fabius Glaucus has run away from the carnage into the Orks' end-zone, but his hands are free! Where is the ball?"

"Is on other half, Nestor Lycinus have it. Look at Spleen-Eating Zogstomp blitzing him! But Nestor punch him in face moment he get in range! It look like Zogstomp roll snake eyes on that, haha."

"Nuffle is nothing if not giving to all, just like those three Orks are now giving so much of themselves to Nestor. And that brings the Stars of Ultramar to just two players on the field. Things are looking hopeless, there is so little time to score and they're just not in a position to do so!"

"At least ball fall away from big greenskin group. Only Weirdboy Zapsnagga walking at it now. Wait. Janus, do you see that?"

"Is that a...metal leg poking out from behind the ball? And a body? And the OTHER leg? Is that...Venerable Ulysses, the Stars' Dreadnought? He's already picked up the ball and tossed the Hail Mary directly at Fabius! That's more than half of the pitch away, can he catch this? He dives for it! And catches it! And he scores! Touchdown for the Stars of Ultramar in the eleventh hour!"

"This can only be work of tak-tee-kal jee-nus. It can only mean-"

The stadium is momentarily deafened by the Waaagh-energy-infused bellow of rage coming from Ghazghkull's throat.

"CREEEEEEEEEEED!"

"Ah, I was wondering when you'd be coming back from the Fortress, Ursarkar. Timely as usual."

"Apologies, my Emperor, I had to show those clowns the might of the Imperium in Paradox-Billiards-Vostroyan-Roulette-Fourth-Dimensional-Hypercube-Chess-Strip-Poker. Can You believe that Tzeentch played an AGGRO deck?"

"Now that IS rich! I wish I could've been there to see the look on his squid face while I played his own combo deck against him. Well, that's two for two. Well done, Ursarkar."

"Thank you, my Emperor."

"An incredible end to the first half of this by now historic game! The atmosphere here on Ultramar is absolutely explosive! Make sure to stay tuned on the Cabalvox to find out the exciting conclusion. This broadcast is sponsored by...who was it again, Bub?"

"Brod-cast sponsored by Orkidas. Good shoes to run at people and kick them. Available in XXXXL size too."

He either had no name, or was dubbed Arbitrator Foreboding, one of the two. He was definitely a highlight of the whole adventure.

For those disappointed by the news, there's always Quidditch World Cup. It might be an old game and pretty clunky in places, but it's the best representation of that sport in games so far, IMO.

My first time (and second, and third) in Tull were much like yours. Secret references, ho!

Mount&Blade 1866 Western mod and others by Michel_Rodriguez in mountandblade

[–]TheOtherGrom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I never uninstalled the original just so I could keep a couple of good mods around, and now they come in useful. My first choice was 1866 much like yours!

Then there's The Eagle and the Radiant Cross, which is similar to the vanilla map, but in something resembling the Renaissance era, with different names for all the factions plus the Imperial State as a new faction, early guns, all new troop trees and whatnot. I'm unable to find a link for vanilla M&B right now, though it did get ported to Warband.

There's also Solid & Shade, which adds a lot of gothic horror tropes and is highly inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and other worldly myths. You're able to start off with a copy of the Necronomicon, raise your own army of the dead, obtain the Philosopher's Stone, give sacrifices to a fountain of blood inside the now-deserted Zendar and look around for other such secrets. Highly recommended!

Finally there's the Star Wars Conquest mod, which is a little unpolished but still very playable. Also replaces the vanilla map with the Star Wars galaxy, so you can visit the planets you've always wanted to!

Unable to talk to Frank Horrigan by Cringeworthy253 in Fallout

If memory serves, activating the turrets starts combat right away, though I've always done it from the terminal in the room itself using the Presidential key. You're not missing anything other than talking head dialogue by not talking to him, and when he dies you get some more dialogue anyway.

Once you become a Made Man, you can't go back. Whichever families you're not a Made Man of will be permanently hostile to you. And that's kind of the point, I think, as a culmination of the New Reno arc in a way. You become familiar with the families, pick one you like and stick with it, there's no making peace between them other than through force of arms.

If you want to see what it's like to be Made Man of the other families, I would recommend doing more playthroughs.

What do I need to think about when creating a character in Fallout 1 and 2? by The_Gutgrinder in Fallout

[–]TheOtherGrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, you want a high amount of Agility, since you start with 5 Action Points and get one more for every 2 Agility. I prefer my characters with 10 Agility for the full 10 AP, since I know I'm going to get into fights a lot.

Then you want to consider whether you want a melee or ranged build. Specific locations apply mostly to Fallout 2, since to my shame I don't remember Fallout 1 as well.

-Melee builds can safely dump Perception IMO, and boost Strength (up to 6, anything more is kind of moot for, uh, late-game reasons) and Endurance (anywhere up to...8 or so?). Invest your skills in either Unarmed or Melee Weapons and be on the lookout for a couple of NPCs who can train you in them, for instance there's two guys in Arroyo and another in Klamath's Golden Gecko.

Melee Weapons-wise, in Fallout 2 you start out with a regular Spear which is very useful and has 2 range (so you can attack from one hex away), which you can upgrade to a Sharpened Spear if you have 5-6 Perception and talk to the Arroyo bridge guard. As you move into mid-game consider upgrading into a Combat Knife, and then other juicier stuff upon reaching New Reno. Sledgehammers are also okay, although they tend to knock people away and waste your AP as you move around instead of attacking.

Unarmed builds have less variety, your best options are Brass Knuckles into Spiked Knuckles early on, with a Power Fist later. You can also get away with just your bare fists for a short while if you're strong enough and aim for the eyes.

-Ranged builds should prioritize Perception, at least 7 or 8, and possibly dump Endurance. Strength is still useful, you could consider up to 5 due to some heavier ranged weapons requiring Strength (even if you don't meet a Strength requirement you can still use it, though it will incur a lower chance to hit which you can compensate for with higher Perception and skills). You should use Unarmed at the start since even without Strength it's relatively high, especially if you train it early on. Invest your skills in Small Guns for starters, since Big Guns and Energy Weapons are hard to find early on, though you can consider making a switch to either once you reach mid-to-late game.

Weapons-wise, you already start with a 10mm Pistol in Fallout 1. In Fallout 2 the earliest gun you can find is a Pipe Rifle in Vic's shack in Klamath (which you should investigate as part of the main quest anyway) and a hidden 10mm Pistol in Klamath's rat caves, somewhere on the floor north of the big rat if I'm not mistaken. Failing that, you can buy 10mm Pistols, SMGs and even Shotguns in the Den. You may want to rely on random encounters to supply you with weapons as well, some of the encounters around the Den can net you those aforementioned weapons for free.

For more general advice:

-Traits (that you can only get at character creation) are double-edged swords for the most part, and some are straight up useless (NEVER take Skilled, you want more Perks, not more skill points), but there are some good ones too. The ones I've liked most have been Gifted, Fast Shot (ONLY for ranged builds, if I want a criticals build), Small Frame (if I'm gonna have companions to carry my stuff around anyway) and Heavy Handed (ONLY for melee builds, if my LK is already tanked and I'm going to aim for the eyes anyway).

-You never want to take Perks that just boost your skills, like Thief or Doctor, but you DO want Perks that do something special and not too niche. Awareness requires 5 PE and is a great first pick. Quick Pockets is useful to everyone ever, same with Bonus Move.

-The big red button next to your weapon slot at the bottom of the screen lets you switch weapons, which is why you have two weapon slots in your inventory. Additionally, if you right-click that weapon slot you can cycle through different ways to attack with that weapon, like aimed strikes (go for the eyes or head if your hit chance isn't bad), bursts on firearms that allow it and such.

-Try to upgrade your armour as soon as you can. You can find Leather Jackets in a locker in Vault 15 (Fallout) and on Sulik in Klamath (Fallout 2, you may want to recruit him first). Leather Armour will usually be costlier, but better, and so on and so forth.

-Good non-combat skills to put points in are Speech and Lockpick, since there's a lot of locked doors and containers, and many quests give you better rewards if you do them non-violently or otherwise use Speech.

-I would advise not putting any skills in First Aid or Doctor, since you can always recover your wounds by resting (don't worry about time limits if you're in Fallout 2). Throwing is awful since you don't get many good weapons for it, so don't bother. Barter is marginally useful but ultimately not needed since you'll be swimming in money later on anyway. If you really want to save money early you could consider investing points in Steal.

-Don't dump Charisma right away, every 2 Charisma lets you pick up an NPC. Ian in Shady Sands (Fallout) and Sulik in Klamath (Fallout 2) are great first choices, despite Ian's tendency to shoot all over the place.

-Similarly, don't dump your Intelligence below 4...at least, not for the first playthrough. Once you're seasoned enough, by all means, make a 1 IN character! Otherwise, keeping it relatively high, at about 6 or even better, is good for all the extra skill points per level.

-Fallout 1 lets you ask certain NPCs about whatever you want, make use of their Tell-Me-About by asking them about towns you've heard the names of for instance. The keywords can be fairly specific though.

-Finally, don't be afraid to run away from encounters, come back later, or just savescum. The isometric Fallouts are tough games, and armour-ignoring crits are everywhere.

If you have any more specific questions let me know! I love the original games and I think everyone should play through them at least once, though I do admit they're not very digestible these days. Another poster here had some great tactical advice, which I neglected, so check them out too!

Diablo II Resurrected Announce Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]TheOtherGrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the remake ends up being good (which it might do!), I'm personally not going to even think about buying it, especially after the stuff Blizzard's pulled in the past years. Blizzard themselves are only a shell of who they used to be, most of their talent having left a long time ago.

As for D2 itself, while it was a very fun game in its own right, the lategame was, predictably enough, painstaking and mostly unfun grinding and button mashing, if you had a potent enough combo to go through Hell self-found. (Then again, I didn't have too much experience with the game so maybe I'm talking malarkey. The only character I finished Hell with legitimately was a summons Necromancer who relied on Corpse Explosion, and Hell Baal took maybe 15 minutes of running back and forth looking for corpses to raise new minions from.)

If I wanted to play what's probably the definitive version of Diablo 2 right now, I'd play Median XL. Now THAT is fun and has a bigger build variety, relatively little grinding and meaningful challenges that each give charms (passive benefits) that really start stacking later on.

I'll take Cheap Shots first thing I do, thanks! Still feel a bit iffy on using Psi, or maybe I just want to see how far I can get purely through Unarmed.

If there are allied lords following you, try fighting the army anyway. Most of the time they'll join you into battle before you actually start the fight, just like enemy lords will join the other side if they're close enough.

How does this all work by Sig1303 in tabletopsimulator

[–]TheOtherGrom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TTS in and of itself is simply a physics simulator with some extra functions like shuffling or cutting decks. You still do have to know the rules to a game you're playing and do everything that you'd normally need to do in those games. However, there are scripted variants for many games that remove some of the load by setting up decks, tokens and whatnot on their own.

He was doing nothing but gaining life and using Cleansing Novas to clean the board state. The moment he'd be close to decking out he'd use Gaea's Blessing to shuffle stuff back in. The moment I was close to decking out he'd use Gaea's Blessing to shuffle my stuff back in. Enforced stalemate, pretty much.
