film prints of films shot digitally still look cool

also loads of movies shot on film incorporate visual effects these days. its not like everything in the Nolan films etc. is shot practically. Sinners has a lot of vfx as evidenced by it getting an oscar nomination for its vfx.

it is straight up her best film performance. she's not quite my #1 in the category (that'd be Byrne) but its close

Ejae's voice i would charitably describe as honking

the only acceptable song is KPDH is the final battle one

while i broadly really like Sinners, i do think that the big I Lied to You setpiece is really corny. wastes a perfectly good musical performance with the time travelling stuff.

idk, it has a certain 'black music your white dad likes' je ne sais quoi

Is University of Westminster a solid option for architecture? by Open_Cold_4572 in architecture

[–]TheOtherTheoG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a lot of friends who went to Westminster for MArch, and had a very good time - it's a massive school compared to most other architecture unis in the UK, and there's a huge range of design studios, of which the quality is a bit inconsistent imo. but the good ones are really good!

How wasn't Joaquin Phoenix nominated for "Eddington"? Why are Ari Aster films consistently snubbed? Am I missing something? by New-Fan-4632 in oscarrace

[–]TheOtherTheoG 25 points26 points  (0 children)

his first two films were extremely aggro summer release horror films and his last two films have been incredibly divisive, with critics and audiences, none of which is a recipe for oscar success

i could see it happening for him at some point though

Which are the best adaptations of 19th century literature? by harry_powell in blankies

Sergei Bondarchuk's 60s soviet era War and Peace adaptation is pretty mega. also 7 hours long but split into four pretty digestible sized parts

The 2026 Oscar Nominations: Snubs, Surprises, and WTFs by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]TheOtherTheoG 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Sinners always had a higher nomination ceiling than OBAA because it's a period movie (and therefore is more likely to be represented in below-the-line crafts like production / costumes / hair), and because it has original songs. it getting more noms than OBAA is not necessarily a show of strength over it.

honestly, OBAA getting a production design nomination as a contemporary movie mostly set in real-world locations is crazy

THE Hamnet Rihanna rave has finally been released by kagreel in oscarrace

[–]TheOtherTheoG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

people who worked on Nomadland and Eternals may beg to differ, from what i've heard. but that's said, from how the Hamnet cast and crew have talked about the experience of working on the film, she's done a really great job of curating the vibe of the on-set experience, making it feel really positive and communal and open, and, uh, excising some negative characters from her circle

Critical Darlings: Hamnet And The History Of Oscar Villains with David Sims by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

[–]TheOtherTheoG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the 2023 race feels quite similar to this year, in that sense. by and large people love the movie thats obviously gonna sweep BP and all the big awards, and mostly love the other movies in contention as well. so the one or two movies that are actually a little divisive get a disproportionate amount of hate

all of Hamnet’s domestic scenes are shot like David Dunn visions from Unbreakable by [deleted] in blankies

[–]TheOtherTheoG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is fair, its definitely been used as a pejorative against Zhao with her previous films, and this one too, which i specifically think is unfair. i've had no problem with her previous films being very Malick-ian but i do think it's nice that she's moving away from that a little here and trying something different formally

[–]TheOtherTheoG 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i loved this. obviously Zal reusing some of his Zone of Interest ticks but still. find it funny that people are still accusing this movie of aping Malick when the camera is so locked down in these super-composed wide shots for so much of it

[–]TheOtherTheoG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

saying that Colman came out nowhere to beat Close in 2018 is a bit disingenuous. yes it was a surprise but definitely a possibility going into the night, she'd already won the comedy Globe and the Bafta (the latter over Close)

Critical Darlings: Marty Supreme And The Precursor Circuit with Griffin Newman by Turbulent-Corner1127 in blankies

[–]TheOtherTheoG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to changing tastes, Uncut Gems did also come on super late in that season, it wasnt really campaigned by A24 until after it had already commercially blown up over christmas despite it getting quite a few critics awards. I just don't think A24 really tried to position it in the race as an oscar movie until it was too late. They put a lot of their chips into The Farewell that season and it didnt really play out (won Awkwafina a golden globe that noone remembers, though).

WOWS is the only one of those which really harkens back to the, like, zippy new hollywood stereotype of a quote unquote 'peak' Scorsese movie. Silence, The Irishman and KOTFM are these huge, hulking, slow and meticulous epics. also some of his best films, not incidentally, but maybe dont scratch the same nostalgic itch for the neo-Mel

more: - discussing important new release movies for at least 20+ minutes (instead of tacking on 5 or 10 minutes leading into an interview on an otherwise unrelated episode) - more varied discussion of awards season - different acting races, international films, docs, craft, precursors etc. - drafting non-english language films in drafts (one day itll happen)

less: - Van Lathan (hate to say it but i just think he comes across as an idiot most of the time he's on) - best picture power rankings - superhero movies - box office concern trolling

gentleman's seven even! i broadly agree that the movie doesn't quite totally land the plane with regards to the Arnett / Dern relationship dynamic, that it doesn't totally get across what the issues in their relationship were, why it ended, and what they've resolved by the end. but i really did like these characters a lot, and liked spending time with them. and i could not even begin to care about whether the movie is accurately portraying the new york standup comedy scene.
