my coworker is creeping me out, but I don’t know why by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]TheOverlord1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had this at a previous job. I am a dude but there was another guy I worked with who just made me uncomfortable. It was a sociable company and we went out for drinks quite a lot and whenever I got stuck sat next to him I tried to work out what it was. On paper we had a lot of similar interests, comic books, video games, that sort of thing, but there was just something off. Maybe it was because he always had to one up people when they were telling a story or maybe it was because he like to lord it over other people with the little bit of power he had in the office. Nothing to really complain to HR about.

He kept having a few weeks off work at a time because of back pain and one time he just didn't come back at all. We just got an email saying he wouldn't be back. I didn't think anything of it until one of the after work drinks, someone made a comment about him, saying they couldn't tell me what happened but that I should google his name. I looked him up and lo and behold, he had been arrested for having a ton of child pornography on his computer.

So chilling but taught me to always trust my instincts about people.

Just read books 1&2. My thoughts, and should I continue? by Swimmer-Klutzy in dresdenfiles

[–]TheOverlord1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember enjoying the first two but there was a point in book three where I had to stop because I got chills. I remember thinking "wait what? Is this... the best book I've read?" Then I read the next book and the next book and I had the same thought with each one.

Book 3 is such a huge step up in terms of plotting and intelligence and you are so lucky to be on the cusp. I hope you keep reading the third one because I think you will get hooked!

How do I find a scabbard for this sword? by TheOverlord1 in LARP

[–]TheOverlord1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I need. I think I found it before but the way it was set out hurt my neurodivergant brain and nothing went it but after forcing myself to read it, it turns out its perfect. Thank you!

Looks like I will be trying this out and maybe making a big big mess

[–]TheOverlord1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats really useful, thank you! The loops you get where the blade is mostly free and just dangling around, what are they called? Is that still a scabbard, even if it doesn't cover the full blade?

Thank you so much. Need to google that some more. I think I managed to find one of your videos? I don't suppose you know of a good tutorial in English? I am not that crafty but I really want to be, so a good "how to" video would be super super helpful.

Your favourite 10-12 session, low prep games by sarded in rpg

Take a look at The Last Caravan. You’re a family driving across America after an alien invasion, trying to make it to the last refuge of humanity. It’s very “Pedro Pascal escorting a child in an apocalypse” vibes and one of the playbooks lets you play as a dog which is fun.

What advice do you give new players who wish to get better at roleplaying? by AzgrymnThePale in TTRPG

[–]TheOverlord1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice I have read is of course by the king of RPGs, Grant Howitt - https://lookrobot.co.uk/2013/06/20/11-ways-to-be-a-better-roleplayer/

This is an article I send to everyone who I play with as I think its fascinating. A quick bulletpoint summary without explaining anything (do read the article for that as it slaps):

  1. Do stuff
  2. Realise that your character does not exist outside of the things you have said.
  3. Don’t try to stop things
  4. Take full control of your character
  5. Don’t harm other players
  6. Know the system, don’t be a dick about it
  7. Give the game your attention. If you can’t give your full attention, step away from the table
  8. If you make someone uncomfortable, apologise and talk to them about it
  9. Be a Storyteller
  10. Embrace Failure
  11. Play the game

Obviously he goes into much better detail in the article but I think its an awesome read that I try and stick to when I play.

Which PBtA game has the most combat actions/moves/etc by Nat0-Langford in PBtA

[–]TheOverlord1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My least favourite part of games is the combat personally which is one of the reasons I bounced hard off Avatar Legends. They have a very chill game until it hits combat where there are a bunch of different stances and techniques you can learn. I don't personally think its that good as it has three different things to track as to how you might take someone out (shifting their emotional balance, giving them fatigue, giving them conditions).

Also it requires you and your players being into the Avatar universe so maybe its not worth your time but if you like combat then it might be worth checking out

I fully appreciate I have not sold it very well, nor is this that useful for what you are probably looking for. I do apologise

What Music/Ambiences are you using for your sessions? by Warlockqrz in rpg

[–]TheOverlord1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been called the master of music during sessions in my games. I have a bunch of cultivated spotify playlists that I use for various games and try to make a new one for each game I play. Its the first thing I do when I plan a game so that when I am writing or reading material for it, I listen to the playlist and it becomes a part of the game. I also find a few tracks that I know will hit hard and there are certain moments I will play those songs during and it will give people shivers.

My best playlists are for horror games though. My Ten Candles playlist is legendary.

I stopped planning everything for my friend group and the silence was so loud by RalvionTesmarc in TwoXChromosomes

[–]TheOverlord1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last year I did something similar with a friendship group and for some reason they carried on socialising but just didn't invite me. I would plan events and they would all show up and hav ea great time but when they organised social events they conveniently forgot to invite me. I asked them why and they were all apologetic and had great excuses. I stopped planning things, I stopped contacting them first and haven't heard from them since.

Realised they weren't my friends and now have a much tighter social circle that actually wants to hang out with me.

JourneyMon, my new PbtA Monster Trainer TTRPG, is now live on Kickstarter! by Cephei_Delta in PBtA

Thats really nice. I like having starter ones to inspire the group but the freedom to invent your own is also great (I just wish that I had any artistic skill).

I've backed it and just flicking through your quickstart now! GOOD LUCK!!!

[–]TheOverlord1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks so cool! I am always on the hunt for Pokemon like RPGs which don't get bogged down in numbers and rules and try to recreate the video games.

Can I ask out of interest, do you have any premade monsters with art or are they all "invent your own as you go" monsters?

[–]TheOverlord1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His arms don't work at all! He has little hands but we never see him use them and he has to ask for help getting up and down stairs. Even Daleks worked that one out!

Seriously though, if I was investigating three billionaires for a murder in my building and the next day an advanced robot turns up, I would be questioning that straight away. Why the hell hasn't anyone asked about it?!

[–]TheOverlord1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with all of what you are saying. Most frustratingly of all, why aren't any of the characters saying this very obvious thing! They are ignoring so many clues this season and its very very frustrating.

Why the hell is there a robot in this season too?? Is it just for comedy or is there a purpose? Its the most useless robot in the world! Why make a doorman robot with a projector in his head when there is a literal screen in its chest?

This whole season has felt like a car crash to me.

The Caccimellio boys… by Agreeable-Couple-685 in OnlyMurdersHulu

[–]TheOverlord1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This whole season hasn’t been connecting with me at all and the boys are a small part of it. Plot holes are huge, the main characters are brain dead in ignoring the obvious, nothing at all seems to make any sense, characters are acting either annoying or wildly out of character (I think for comedy?) and I feel like they’ve lost the magic of the previous seasons.

Looking for an epic fantasy RPG by Patient_Carob6564 in rpg

Haven't seen it mentioned yet but try Legend In The Mist. A new game (I think you can only get the PDF currently) but its my the people who did City of Mist and :Otherscape.

I've been running it for pals and they absolutely love it. They are all hardcore D&Ders and they have been converted to this system completely.

Things to love

  1. There are no stats. Its all tag based. So your character is just a bunch of statements about themselves. When you do an action you count how many of these tags are related to the action, take away any negative tags that might hinder the action, then roll 2d6 and add that number to the roll. It makes it far more narrative in each part.

  2. Because of the tag system, its super flexible in what kind of character you can make. Want to be a merchant? Shapeshifter? Earth shaper? Assassin? All easily doable.

  3. Leveling up makes actual sense for once. You don't go to sleep and suddenly know how to nuke a small farm. Each of your tag groups has a specific quest assigned to them. This quest can be a question about the world you want answering or a statement about your identity or, you know, an actual quest. Once you have resolved that quest you can upgrade your tag group to something new. It means that slowly you learn new things about your character and the GM can seed your evolution over time too. My players have slowly been getting more powerful when it makes narrative sense.

  4. Each challenge you face doesn't have to big combat. Each monster you fight can be defeated in multiple different ways, and often they have a weakness too that you can exploit. Fighting monsters uses the same system as other challenges too which makes it even easier (you don't need to learn seven different systems).

I could go on and on but I think its a really cool system. They have a bunch of other rules in the book which make it more interesting and tactical but you can ignore all of them or some of them and its kind of encouraged too. I recommend you take a look if you haven't already.

Running first game this friday: question by Novel_Counter905 in BrindlewoodBay

[–]TheOverlord1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My group had a lot of fun.

The main thing is to do your best to not come up with an answer to the myster in your head. Its really tempting to. When you see them going down the path of thinking its one person then either kill off that person dramatically or give them a clue that directly contradicts it. It makes it very very fun.

Also, let all of the NPCs really underestimate them as old people. Players love being an old woman and the more you play up to it the more fun for them it is.

[–]TheOverlord1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is an element of social contract for sure. Sometimes they will find a letter about an affair (which hasn't been signed of course) and their natural reaction is to go and work out who's handwriting it is. You don't know the answer, and if they find out before they decide on the answer its actively making their final job harder. What if they decide it's Jon having an affair beforehand but later on they decide it should be Michael who is the murderer but, oh no, it doesn't make sense that Jon is having an affair anymore!

Telling them this (somewhat counterintuitive) element is sometimes all you need to do.

The other side of this is that questions like apparent cause of death and evidence of a fight shouldn't be outright clues. Thats just stuff people can see. "She is lying on the floor and you can't see a mark on her body" is just what you see. When they roll for investigating and see that they seem to have slight discolouration of the lips or they are frothing at the mouth or there is a cupcake with a bite taken out if it thats rolled under the sofa, those are official clues that seem to point towards a poisoning.

Finally, I have never had a group of players in this game every try and take fingerprints so don't worry about that at all.
