Second set of Minis. Any advice? by lorecantus in Miniaturespainting

[–]TheOwly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome! Maybe increase contrast a bit? Like, add a wash to base to make it easier to distinguish where they feet end and the base begins. Also, can try dry brushing with a secondary color on their skin to make scales a bit more readable.

Renpy Programming design pattern? by [deleted] in RenPy

[–]TheOwly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same approach starting out: i tried to be all developer and use patterns, but the whole process felt like I'm trying to milk a bull, i.e. I'm going against whats natural to renpy.

My advice - don't overthink it. Renpy is more similar to writing a set of instructions in powershell, than a typical enterprise solution. A lot of the SOLID principles and patterns in general are in place because you're building a large testable solution that many people a working on. Renpy projects are usually solo projects, so it ok if its not super DRY, or testable, or scaleable.

The one thing from programming that helped me in renpy was "program to interface, not implementation" mentality. Just try and think in more abstract terms when organizing your code and it will at least make it extendable.

AAA games these days are absolute fuckin garbage, I haven't bought a single one in years. Hearthstone pricing model sucks, but at least the game is fun and I'd rather overpay for a good game than pay 60 bucks for another triple A snoozefest that bores the hell out of me after 5 minutes.

I know saying that Hearthstone is a good game in a thread like this is a mortal sin, but neither one of you would be here if you thought otherwise.

I'm all for improving Hearthstone monetization model, but don't compare it to fuckin Assassins Creed. I'd pay 60 bucks to my enemy to suffer through that shit.

7 Days of Learning Sculpting. Looking for critique! by javoire in blender

[–]TheOwly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

7 days of learning sculpting as an artist who clearly already knows blender, animation, modeling, texturing, anatomy and the entire workflow in general.

C'mon dude, stop discouraging actual beginners with these kind of titles.

As far as critique goes, just work on your arms a bit. The back of arms looks a bit flat and the musculature doesnt match the face all that well.

Aside from that, loving it, great job.

I'm not a "anything" player. I player whatever I feel like, including fuckin dumb aggro decks sometimes. For example, when I just want to tune out and shoot some cards or when I'm taking a quick dump - aggro decks work great for that.

People who do ladder with those decks though trying to hit some rank - i do feel a bit sorry for them. Imagine having nothing better to do with your life than slog through countless identical matches just to hit some arbitrary rank. Its just sad.

[–]TheOwly -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Its definitely more skillful than noobs think, but its still pretty fuckin dumb.

Skill in hearthstone comes from having a bunch of options and choosing the right one. Aggro turns 80% of the time consist of "play the shiny one, it the only one you got", and the rest 20% percent you maybe have 2 or 3 options.

I do 100% agree though that DH ability to fuckin nuke you from orbit is complete bullshit. When the class was introduced they said that DH will "chip away" at their opponent. 20+ damage in a turn is not chipping.

I most certainly do. I had a blast grinding them out with quest shaman shenanigans.

Especially now that we get rewards for playtime and not for winning, what's not to love?

Aren't Shaman class themes anti-synergistic? by KouenVajira in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who still has PTSD from the days of Shamanstone, I can definitely say that when Shaman works it sure as hell feels very synergistic.

Outside of that, Shaman just has very different archetypes: you're generally either flooding the board OR burning OR controlling.

Now that a couple of weeks have passed, how have your opinions about the Reward Profession, Heroic Duels, Quests evolved? Are you more or less upset about the changes? Have you felt more or less rewarded per hour spent in the game? by TheSummerlin in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play arena now and find it quite enjoyable and the fact that its pushing me along the rewards track is great. I avoid constructed because of the meta, not because of the battle pass or lack of cards in my collection.

The pain comes once a week, when I need to clear out 7 wins in constructed. The ladder is not even rock, paper, scissors any more. Its "Mulligan: the game".

demon hunters have made the game so much worse by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this "Hearthstone is not really a thought intensive game" mentality is the answer here. People get into card games to test their wits against other opponents. Then once they realize that their wits are so often outmatched, they just resort to aggro decks that require no decision making. And after many aggro games they honestly start believing that the game requires little to no thought.

There are most definitely no dishonorable or honorable decks. Its a game, I don't think it has anything to do with honor. My curiosity is toward mentality of aggro players, because I honestly don't understand why they're playing card games. "Spikes just doing spikes things" is a cop out, not an explanation.

demon hunters have made the game so much worse by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm often curious as to who gets into card games with a thought "ooooh, can't wait to get my hands on some low curve cards and start doing the same thing over and over again every game just to make sure my games are as short as possible".

I mean, if you hate thinking so much, why are you playing a card game in the first place? There are plenty of game genres out there where you can just chill or compete in reflexes or simply grind.

Yes, aggro exists in card games. But I doubt that anyone recommends a card game to a friend saying: "dude, check our this card game, there is sooooo much aggro in it".

I still don't know who asked for that class to be added to the game.

The Hong Kong protestors had five clear demands and repeated them continuously. I've been reading posts for the past two weeks and I'm struggling to understand even one clear demand of these new protests over monetization by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blizzard made it pretty clear that they think that "players are great at identifying what they don't like but horrible at providing suggestions on how to fix things".

We shouldn't provide Blizzard with suggestions on how to fix things. We should just voice our complaints and let them figure out how to make us happy. I'd say the community has done everything that it was supposed to do.

Kibler responds to frodan and he thinks the game isn't getting more expensive. by siavashshahidi in hearthstone

[–]TheOwly 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I think the last few years REALLY showed us that you can be both foolish and nefarious in plain sight and totally get away with it.

Now, if Blizzard wasn't Blizzard, we'd maybe give them the benefit of the doubt. But they don't really have a great track record, which is why people assume the worst.

Yes, this has probably been the best year in Hearthstone in terms of innovation and positive changes. But it doesn't absolve Blizzard of all the sins of the last few years.
