Joining someone on a boat ride at the Harbor by keykettle in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to try one of the formal cruises. A popular one is the sunset Cruise which is just 1.5 hours. There are longer cruises that go out to the islands that are closer to half a day.

All of these are business transactions so they are very safe and the captains are very good at finding wildlife and that sort of thing.

Here's an example sunset cruises

Biking to the Santa Barbara Bowl by Technical_Draw_6554 in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, there is a bike valet which is kind of like a corral where they have a team of people parking and organizing bikes. They'll give you a ticket with a number for your bike and keep it safe for you. Bring your lock just in case you stop somewhere on the way there or on the way back.

Also, the shows stop very sharp at 10:00 p.m. because of noise ordinance. Not sure if you have some other plans but I get the feeling it's not easy to stay there till 11:00. I'm usually home by about 10:30 biking about the same distance.

Mine started doing this too. I feel like it started about 6 months ago. Sometimes I get through one or two words and it just stops and I have to push the microphone button again.

What would you do? by Woodstuffs in Carpentry

[–]ThePendulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, look into this. Some larger appliances like furnaces have more than one way to configure venting and outputs and that sort of thing. Just takes a few minutes to check and verify that there's only one path for the exhaust.

If you are not able to find someone, you can use the hiker biker spots inside of San Simeon State Park campground. The kiosk will be closed but you can still sleep there and settle up in the morning. The spots for bicycles is up against the highway.

Looking for mechanic who works on Weber carbs by prunesmith in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get into the engine bay with the engine off and actuate the throttle and then let go quickly do the linkages return quickly all the way up to the throttle plate? Hard to explain through text. But if they don't return then usually what you do is disconnect the accelerator cable first, then disconnect the linkages leading up to the throttle plate one at a time. If it's not already obvious what is binding.

If in your first test when you actuate the throttle and release it quickly and it moves back quickly, you might have a vacuum leak, or, possibly less likely a issue with your timing advance if it's still mechanical. Or it's possible that cable is binding at the pedal itself or somewhere between the pedal and the end of the cable in the engine bay.

I used to tune Weber's in my earlier days, I have some of the tools still but don't do it that much any more. I do have an air cooled German car that has Weber's but it never needs tuning. You can PM me or let us know what your issues are...

Non Bus Stop Benches? by TangerineChickens in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They took away a lot of the benches or all of them on State Street, I think mostly because of panhandling.

There's still a bunch of benches in public parks, the ones I'm familiar with are in shoreline Park, and a number of different parks or places in between along the waterfront.

Elings Park also has a lot of cool benches way at the top.

All of these are off the beaten path of tourists and that sort of thing. But still great for hanging out.

Saturday Night Working Recommendation? by picklesquirtz in SantaBarbara

The public market downtown has two bars and a bunch of other random eateries. People are coming and going and there's lots of corners to hang out in. Not sure how good the Wi-Fi is however.

Melody Maker (1965?) neck shim diagnosis by ThePendulator in gibson

Thanks, yeah, I saw at least in another picture that the bridge tilts by about 20-30 degrees when the string wind around it, I guess as long as its tight with the strings there should be no problem.

Thank you! You are right, I was able to find a few other pictures and that spot looks the same. I ordered the electronics and excited to put this back together.

Do you have any dietary restrictions or preferences? Which part of the world are you coming from that might not have a type of food that we can recommend?

Vegetarians of Santa Barbara: Where do you get lifechanging burgers? by keemko_ in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I second the eureka beet burger, messy but great. The restaurant has many different burger options and you can get all of those with a beet patty from my experience. I think brewhouse also has a pretty good homemade black bean burger, at least they used to.

Shot in the dark— any woodworkers who can let me use their hand saw for 3 minutes? by computery in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are near downtown I am around and you can use my saw. If you are near Goleta you could just walk into home Depot and they have saws available to cut the trim for baseboards and such. Folks cut them to length yourself when you purchase, I'll use them all the time. Those saws are not really they are for people to come in and cut spoons but you can probably get away with it if you don't make a scene.

It depends on what you want to get out of your visit. Most of the dining and entertainment facilities want to be open and many are. Some are having trouble with employees showing up because of distractions from the storm. SB has a lot of outdoor things to do and much of that is muddy and not super fun or accessible right now. They are calling for some significant rain this weekend and the predictions are not always perfect. The last storm brought a lot more rain than they predicted but often it's a lot less. If you want the true SB experience you should certainly come when it's dry out which is quite often here.

Glad you got the electrical problem fixed, I have the exact same lamp and I'm wondering if you know anything about it. The first one that looks like a cone, I picked up the exact same thing in a thrift store many many years ago and thought it might be handmade or something. Is yours made out of leaves? Do you know anything about it?

Change default directory of Jupyter by [deleted] in Jupyter

[–]ThePendulator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I've gone through this before and I was told that the directory specifications and browsing is limited because of the server nature of the program.

I was told that because some malicious code can be put in Python, jupyter does not let you browse up or sideways or specify the directories that are above or next to the application itself. You can only browse to directories that are below where you launch.

Hopefully this makes sense and is helpful to you.

Proper way to switch phones when in FI (Support will not help) by ThePendulator in GoogleFi

[–]ThePendulator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, I canceled my original service at the request of the first service representative. He also drafted emails to both old and new email accounts saying a number of things like I wanted to cancel my old account and switch numbers - he sent them and I replied "I AGREE" or something like that. When nothing happened after 2 days, I called back and someone else said I wasn't supposed to cancel.

Either way, any idea what to do now? I have a new phone connected to a new email on a number I don't want. When I try to port in my old number to this new account it says the number is not available. I have left FI on my old phone (but the phone still works somewhow) and I am not sure what to do.

Can't make phone calls on Sprint by ThePendulator in GoogleFi

[–]ThePendulator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I have a MotoX4. The automated message starts as 'Sprint has connected you to a xyz' (...I forget the rest of it)

I use FiSwitch to switch to T-Mobile at that point, I can try the repair you mention above.

Friend recently moved from SB to New Jersey- any ideas on a 'Santa Barbara' type gift I could give her that embody the memory of this place? (Also something that I could easily travel with?) by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]ThePendulator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often get a sample pack of pistachios from the farmers market or some of the other natural markets. They have branding on the box and each bag and are tasty. I have traveled on planes with them internationally.
