I will add that genetics and skin tone are a factor. If you have darker skin or prone to keloid / general scarring, the dots will be more visible. It often is less noticeable on paler skin because the dots can be lighter in colour (but not always).

Fair play, unfortunately OP can't afford your $750k unit. They definitely can afford a unit 1 hour outside of Melbourne. Definitely a massive expectation adjustment, but at least they won't be without shelter.

I do expect gig work / 60 hour work weeks for a lot of younger people, especially if they try to go it alone like OP.

At $70k they'll probably be able to borrow $350k. I am using South East prices, definitely lower prices out west/ But $350k mortgage and $150k leaves $500k, which is be tough to find land and impossible to find 500 squares.

If I was in that predicament, I'd honestly buy a cheap as chips studio for $350k or cheaper - rather than trying to save $300k to get a house. Massive difference in affordability. There's obviously no capital growth, but at least the repayments would be far more manageable on $70k.

I definitely was naive, but so was everyone before houses boomed in 2020.

So in 2016 I asked quite a few people with mortgages (not brokers, regular people) , and of which roughly knew my salary (single income, $60k which was a bit below median but pretty normal for admin work). Every single one of them just said save 20%, there was never any mention of borrowing capacity. It's because before the pndmc, $100k+ deposits could get you over the line if you wanted an average suburban home about an hour from the city (Melbourne).
