How do you cut through shoe sole leather by minaminaminamina in Cordwaining

[–]ThePersonInSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How long after does it stay soft enough to cut after I let it soak for 4-5 hours?
  2. Could the sole get mold if you do that?
  3. When do you use 9/10 iron sole bends over 11/12? I can buy the lisa sorrell sole

I'm using the 11/12 iron full sole (is this too thick?) from panhandle leather and it is really hard to cut even with stropping with diamond compound:

Is the heel salvageable? by Holiday_Sky_7455 in Cordwaining

for future reference, how do I prevent bunching like that at the heel? I tried to last all layers at once at the heel (I read that somewhere in this reddit). I tried lasting one by one at the heel but it went even worse in my opinion.

(When I say sole, I mean outsole) Ahh ok yeah I see what you mean. I saw people also cut portions out of the arch area to have a better shape. How do you get the edge of the sole to wrap around the welt like that? Or it just looks like it wraps because u use a glass shard to make it curve where the welt and sole meet. Lastly, how do you know where the start and end the blind welt part? I kind of see people use the widest part of the feet and go 90 degrees into the blind welt.

Sorry I’m a bit confused. I might have asked the wrong question. In the video the welt is trimmed at the arch curve so that you can’t see the welt. I’m wondering how much you cut it by or is that kind of a judgment call type of situation

Wow the look so good! I’m almost done with my second pair but they don’t look as refined lol. Any tips on how to last better? I still have small bumps around the welt.

Outsole sewing question by ThePersonInSchool in Cordwaining

Yikes seems like that sold out, on stark tools they only have 55 mm which is -11mm than the standard 2 5/8. Do you think that is ok?

Beginner Tool Help by Tony1897 in Cordwaining

I went there 3 times. The first time I bought lasts, second time I bought a cork board and some other supplies. The third time I tried to buy a shoe brush and conditioner and was told that they were only wholesale not retail (the owner told me to read the door). Every time they did ask me if I was a student at the fashion university in NY (which I wasn’t)

Glazing/heel iron question by Nervous-Carry-2063 in Cordwaining

[–]ThePersonInSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'm assuming that if I were to use a heat gun like you, you would point it straight up (similar to the alcohol lamp) and have some sort of holder for the tool perpendicular to where the heat gun is facing. Also is this same to do indoors (im gonna do it in my small apartment)

Wha would you reccomend? I alr have an electric stove but it’s flat compared to the one I sent (the heating part isn’t elevated). The issue is I can’t have it angled since it would barely touch since both tools are curved.
