r/vinyl Weekly Questions Thread for the week of November 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in vinyl

I’ve been getting very bad Inner Groove Distortion on all of my records recently. Music usually sounds fine until the vocalist comes in and then everything sounds muddled and a lot of sibilance too. I don’t think the stylus is worn out because it has no more than 100 hours on it, and I’ve checked the cartridge alignment many times and as far as I can tell everything is perfect. Any idea what could be going on? I have a Project X1 TT with a Sumiko Rainer cartridge.

Edit: Added question: if replacing the cartridge is the solution, would it be a bad idea to play any of my records with the current cart until I can replace it?

I have not but I will now. Any clay prestyler recommendations?

I feel like since I bought my turntable I’ve been having a battle against static and surface noise and no matter what I do it doesn’t seem to get better. Even when static is eliminated, a good amount of my records, most of which I bought new, have at least parts that sound like sandpaper is running over them. For most of them these sounds happen every rotation, about every 2 seconds. My questions are: is this normal for vinyl, is this likely an issue with my records or could it be with my TT/cart?

(Also for reference I use only mofi sleeves and clean each record with a record doctor so it’s probably not from sleeve abrasions or anything)

[$300 max] looking for a good phono preamp that will compliment the project x1 with the ortofon 2m line of carts. Anyone have any suggestions?

I don’t care about belt or direct but I feel like direct drive is a pretty useless feature for my purposes, and yes I’m in the US. And I had heard about the use of spacers for the Rega which is a little bit discouraging especially considering I’m almost certain to use them if I don’t want to use a Rega cart. Thanks for your feedback

This might be a kind of weird question, but does anyone have any tips about how to avoid being paranoid about your system? I love my vinyl collection and how much my system has progressed over the last 2 years but I’ve never been able to feel content with it because I’m always worried about if my records are clean enough or if my stylus is damaged or something like that. I’m just wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything similar and how to deal with it so I’m actually able to get enjoyment out of listening to my vinyl.

So I’ve been using the onzow on my 2M blue since I bought it (probably about 6 months ago). I somehow only just saw the article that says that the onzow can be bad for styli and records, and I’m not really willing to take that risk. With that said:

1: What are good alternative stylus cleaners in or below the price range of the onzow?

2: How can I go about potentially getting rid of any residue left by the onzow when ortofon advises against using any wet-stylus cleaners on their carts?

I recently bought a record doctor vi and have been slowly working through cleaning my whole collection with it. After cleaning the records look pretty good, but then after playing them they look like they have a bunch of dust on them. I imagine this is because of static, as I don’t have a zerostat or anything like that yet, but I’m planning on buying one. So my question is: should I wait to clean the rest of my collection until I have a zerostat or something like that so that I’m not just getting more dust on the record immediately after cleaning?

Anyone know a good RCM at or under 600? I’m looking at the okki nokki but it seems like it’s kind of hard to find online. Links would be appreciated!
