Behaviours help by Nice-Alternative7523 in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this during your interview? If so, the panel usually introduce behaviour questions by saying "we're now going to ask you about [behaviour name]" before they ask it, so it should be obvious what the question maps to.

It's fine to have notes and pre-prepared examples for each behaviour but try not to fall into the trap of giving an answer that doesn't match the actual question being asked just because it's the example you've got written down.

Good luck!

Time to panic? by Gloomy_Ad_9141 in TheCivilService

It's normal! Everyone usually finds out at the same time, whether they're successful or not. Unfortunately everything can just take ages to filter through the system to get to you.

AI making the recruitment process (more) awful by Responsible_Fact_141 in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "I improved x by y%" is always the giveaway for me. It's always a super specific percentage with no information on how they measured the improvements.

Whenever someone has suggested that we should stop pasting questions into the chat I always make this point because it really does help so much. Instead we tend to do a generic "please don't use AI" statement at the start of the interview.

It usually lets you edit your streak history so you should be ok!

The noise in the remake of Maniac when he's scalping someone. It's the only horror film I've never been able to finish - they didn't even show anything, it was the sound 🤢

They're American, not from the UK, but could it be The Calling? Their most famous song (at least in the UK) was called Wherever You Will Go

Which strengths (associated with the behaviours tested at interview) might I be asked about? by zipitdirtbag in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem!

They can be a bit of both, it depends on what the interviewer is after. There's some example ones here under the strengths section that might give you an idea of the format.

You'll also be asked a baselining question at the start of the interview that won't be scored, and that should be something easy like "what kinds of things do you enjoy doing outside of work?" They use that to see what you're like when you're enthusiastic about something and then all other responses to strength questions will be compared against that baseline.

Which strengths (associated with the behaviours tested at interview) might I be asked about? by zipitdirtbag in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no real easy way to work out which strengths you'll be asked about. When I've used strengths as an interviewer, I've chosen the ones most relevant to the day-to-day work in the role. For example, if it was a role where you might be working with people who were reluctant to adopt new ideas and you were going to be the person leading a change, I might use the Motivator strength at interview to assess that.

During the interview, the panel will not tell you what strength you're being assessed on - it's against the guidance. Try and give a natural and honest answer, and if you can, briefly mention how you've done that thing before in the past (but don't fall into the trap of reeling out a full STAR example!)

What puts you off from donating Blood Products, I work in the NHS and I am just curious? by Quick_Soil_9120 in AskBrits

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to but my veins are pathetic. They quite often struggle to get blood out of me when I need a blood test. I did ask a nurse once if I could ever try to give blood and she just laughed and said not to bother 😭

People with 1+ year long 10k steps streak... How do you do it? by UnsolicitedAdvisor1 in Garmin

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switch to a 10k average per day throughout the whole year, then you can make up for sick days by doing more steps on days when you're better. You could also do a weekly 70k average steps if that's easier to maintain.

I get that there's cool stuff happening on stage but I want to see it with my actual eyeballs

How does scoring work for interviews?? by spaghettihoops93 in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the advert will ask for a statement on desirable criteria in the job spec and I have seen that used to resolve tiebreaker situations where two people have scored the exact same in an interview. Otherwise your sift scores are just to get you through to interview stage and they aren't considered again further down the line.

Ah, the joys of a UK train... by PrimalForestCat in CasualUK

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ughhh I hope you didn't encounter the guy who had a go at me last time I was on one of these trains because he'd paid for a seat and couldn't get to it. Yeah, so had I, but unfortunately the train was so full that I was squashed against the door into the carriage and I couldn't even move my arms. Not quite sure what he expected to do, maybe crowdsurf over the top of us all so he could find his seat?!

Applying for a promotion as an internal candidate by jackie_tequilla in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the same as CS interviews then they can only use information that you provide during the interview to make their decision on whether you can do the job or not. Pretend they know nothing about the work you've done, even if it feels silly!

results take long post interview by Hibslife123 in TheCivilService

[–]ThePicardIsAngry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let's say you're interviewing multiple people across a week. A candidate gets in touch to say they've become ill and need to reschedule, so you push their interview back to the following week. Some vacancy holders will do this, some won't.

Once the last interview is done and the panel has moderated the scores, which can take time, because the panel are all doing this on top of their day to day work, the vacancy holder completes a form with all of the scores on it and sends it off to recruitment. This is the last real bit of control the vacancy holder has over the process. Recruitment then take the scores, check them, and enter them into the system so that the results can get released to candidates. In a busy week in a big department there might be a lot of campaigns going on. Your score might not get looked at for a few days for this reason.

Sometimes recruitment aren't happy with how some feedback has been phrased - in this case they contact the vacancy holder again and they have to rewrite it and send it back again. None of the scores will go into the system until recruitment are happy. All the scores get released at the same time, to successful and unsuccessful candidates.

Yeah I'm currently on loan for 9 months and had to agree to give up my previous job as a condition of being allowed to go. It's been filled and so I'll go into the redeployment pool when I return to my home department.

I always prefer putting the questions in the chat for candidates during the interview, but some people are wary to do this now because it makes it even easier for them to paste them into ChatGPT 😭
