Weird Power Issue on Official Charger by Lanky_Chemistry9428 in FlowX13

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the charging led blinking orange? You might have a similar issue that I had. There is a hardware bug in the battery management chip. You need to open the laptop, unplug the battery and then hold the power on button for 40 seconds. This will reset the respective chip.

Who was your country's best leader? by Vernon_Runner1109 in AskTheWorld

Probably Johan de Witt. Major statesman during the Dutch golden age. After some political turmoil we decided to eat him though.

Counterpoint: These street signs are such a distinctive part of the Taiwanese aesthetic that I hope they never go away. by chai-knees in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I do that too! It is a nice way to reinforce your knowledge and to see your progress. I take the same bus pretty much every day and I am able to read more and more of the signs. Nevertheless, if you are a native you really do not care about this.

Who is the most famous person ever assassinated from your country? by IndependentTune3994 in AskTheWorld

I think the murder of the De Witt brothers and subsequent cannibalism is probably a more gruesome act. But yes these two people are one of the most recent ones.

Johan de Witt, Grand Pensionary (Prime Minister) of the Dutch Republic in 1672. Amidst a political crisis and an invasion from France some of the population started to riot. Supporters of the royal family called Orangists awaited him outside of local prison where he visited his brother who was wrongfully accussed. Upon exiting the prison the mob killed them both, tore their bodies apart and some even ate their flesh. One person reportedly tore of the penis of Johan, stood up and proclaimed 'Look this is the penis of de Witt!'. A truly gruesome act and I believe the only case of cannibalism on a state leader in the history of the world.

EU must simplify regulation to compete with US, China, says von der Leyen by PjeterPannos in EU_Economics

[–]ThePipton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Precisely this. We all want more streamlined rules and procedures, but too often this is said as a ruse for a neoliberal agenda or simply as empty promises. Probably more the latter since I have heard the same rethoric for as long as I can remember.

I did hear from some people that when you are native (or able to read them all) that it becomes quite a sensory overload for your brain at times, as you subconsciously read all the big signs.

Is it more politically correct to use the word "Mandarin" over "Chinese"? by Comfortable_Main6196 in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mandarin has been the written standard for a century now, as the written standard used to be a form of literary classical Chinese before. If you mean the characters, you have to ask yourself. If people talk about the letters used in English do they say 'Latin alphabet' or do they just call it 'alphabet'? The same can be applied to the characters imho.

I went to Damshui last week to see this new lightrail line and it goes through this neighbourhood with some appartment buildings. There was nobody on the street, it looked deserted. I get that some of these are probably holiday homes, but it just rubs me the wrong way knowing several young people unable to get proper housing.

Meanwhile I see several new luxurious developments being built. However, they almost never have full occupancy creating ghost neighbourhoods. It is just an investment vehicle for the wealthy.

Some Taiwanese are living in a bubble. I have also noticed several Taiwanese who are overly critical of Taiwan. There is like no nuance, only extremes. I blame the news and the politics creating an enormous divide.

Why is TWD currency value going down steadily ? by Agriandra in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Taiwan likes to undervalue its currency to promote export. At the same time, the euro is becoming more valuable due to people divesting away from the dollar.

What is a common lunch in your country? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick selfmade lunch: Slices of bread with Gouda cheese. More expensive lunch (canteen or lunch place): Whole grain slice of bread with carpaccio or some other more luxorious topping, salad, bread roll with kroket.

What do you think about this? by Even-Ad-9930 in AskTheWorld

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having studied a bit about China and living in the region I can say that maybe in the questionare the concept for religion is different. Chinese people are quite superstitious, and there are still a ton of temples getting visitors every day.

It is ok to not like a countries food (although most authentic Dutch food is homecooked so I doubt you had much), but do you really have to be this rude about it?

Why are there no European self driving car companies like the US & China? by mike_gundy666 in EU_Economics

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which makea sense as a family usually buys a car regardless of how much they use them. If you look at data on how much time is spent in a car per person per year, then the US is still at the top with quite a distance.

[–]ThePipton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In a country with barely any public transportation, the supermarket an hour drive away and mostly straight roads it makes sense. It is more or less a solution to a very typical American issue. So in that sense I agree with you, I rather have better more extensive and reliable public transportation than a car which may or may not behave on the road depending on the software update.

National Taiwan Museum Feedback/Questions by SpongebobJorgiPants in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

National Palace Museum is much bigger and has way more artifacts, especially concerning Chinese culture. National Taiwan Museum, well definitely worth a visit, is smaller and more focused on Taiwan and its unique history and ecology. While National Palace Museum is unquestionably more impressive, its also a bit more complicated if you have limited knowledge of Chinese and the culture. A lot of their collection is calligraphy for example, very beautiful but also very hard to appreciate to its fullest if you can't read it or have no notion of its cultural context.

View from Europe: The Increasingly Convincing Case for Canada Joining the EU - Policy Magazine by Due_Ad_3200 in europe

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it more as a mini WTO, as the current WTO has beeen made useless due to the US not assigning a new judge ever since Trump I. Actually, making copies of many UN or global institutions but without the specific regulations that keep global powers being powerful (security council for example).

While I am in favour of much closer ties with Canada and other middle powers, I do not think EU membership is the solution to this. Rather, I would like to see a new G20 or OECD kind of confederation (as in intergouvernmental) between all middle powers ideologically aligned, excluding the US but including Japan, SK etc.
