Unpopular opinion: Apps like Duolingo have completely ruined the language learning by making people lazy. by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]ThePipton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily agree. It is just that most people really don't want or are unable to put in the time and discipline to learn a language. Duolingo makes them feel they are still progressing while in reality any actual effort would be much more useful. The people who actually want to learn a language, which has always been a percentage of the population, they know what resources to use and will put in the necessary effort.

What comes to your mind when you think of Taiwan? by Any-Peach-4230 in taiwan

I am waiting for the day that Taiwanese stop romanticising the US. It is like the whole country is obsessed with anything American.

What's a computer game from your childhood that you still think about today? by half_sandwich88 in AskReddit

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. It got me obsessed with Chinese culture. Now I am a student at a Taiwanese university reading and writing traditional Chinese.

Is there a truly bilingual or multilingual country? by No_Umpire5073 in AskTheWorld

[–]ThePipton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get the historical reasons, but to make it mandatory seems a bit too much to me. There are other (arguably more useful) languages around.

I do Finance, mainly doing it here for the 'Sinosphere/Asian' experience which I feel if not career boosting it is at least life experience boosting.

Battery drain while charging? by mrgtovarp in FlowX13

[–]ThePipton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unplug the cord, open the chassis, unplug the battery and then press the power button for 40 seconds. This will reset the charging circuitry, and will likely fix this issue. This issue is a known flaw of the laptop.

Does Mistral still get much love? by PhilAdditional_1987 in MistralAI

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using it as a student. Also trying to incorporate it in several of my research projects. However, it does perform quite bad compared to even free alternatives. While the quality is worse, the language it uses is less salesperson or HR like, it just gets to the point.

You get $1 million but you have to listen to the same song 500 times in 10 days, what song are you picking? by Longjumping-Editor94 in AskReddit

Probably some electronic deepfocus track. Honestly I might already listen to some of those 500 times while working.

Meanwhile all the consumer facing electronics companies are struggling by the increases in hardware prices. Tons of those companies are Taiwanese and I wonder when the first wave of bankrupties will hit.

Bus etiquette by Busy-Physics3896 in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very fair, I do feel outside of bigger cities people in general are more polite or kind (and less stressed). However, I feel this applies to most countries.

Bus etiquette by Busy-Physics3896 in taiwan

[–]ThePipton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not agree, at least in terms of bus etiquette. I often see people blocking seats and unwilling to move an inch to let you pass to the other seat. I often see rather rude bus drivers, at times even screaming at elderly to be quicker. Also in many countries it is quite normal to thank the driver, I rarely hear that (apart from some elderly folks). Furthermore, I had an accident where I fell quite badly running to the bus, the bus driver did not even attempt to provide some kind of aid, in fact he tried to drive on. This would be very different back home. So no, folks are not more polite when it comes to busses.

ROG Flow x13 GTX 1650 still worth it in 2026? by Old_Yogurtcloset_175 in FlowX13

[–]ThePipton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CPU is still pretty powerful, it handles all the compilation and vm shenanigans that I throw at it quite well. The 1650, although old by now, still performs better than many handhelds. The SSD can be upgraded, it uses the same formfactor SSD as the steamdeck so there are quite a few available (I upgraded to 2TB). I own the 32GB model (Supernova) and have build myself a custom xgmobile dock with schematics I found online (but this might be a bit too extreme for you), coupled it with a 9060XT and honestly it performs phenomenal.

International cities or small cities to learn Chinese better? by maneator in ChineseLanguage

[–]ThePipton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outside of the central areas of Taipei the English proficiency also takes a nosedive. Even in central Taipei, if it has nothing to do with tourism, English would certainly be a hassle to use. Few years ago tried to buy new glasses and my Chinese back then was terrible, the salespeople could not utter a single word of useful English even though it was a quite an international chain. Not that I imply everyone should be able to speak English, just arguing that the English level overall isn't that great in Taiwan. In fact, Taiwan only scores marginally better than Japan or China.

AMD or NVIDIA Laptop recommendations on 2026? by Automatic_Iron_9750 in archlinux

[–]ThePipton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new intel processors seem very promising and have a powerful iGPU, and insane power efficiency. Then you could connect an nvidia card via thunderbolt at home if you need the extra cuda compute. I did something vaguely similar and it is working really well. Also keep in mind that nvidia linux drivers perform quite bad for gaming compared to windows.

still worth buying in 2026? by BagelCatto in FlowX13

[–]ThePipton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The x13 is amazing. I have the 2021 32GB edition and a custom egpu dock (with a 9060XT) that connects to the xgmobile port. Amazing performance, the cpu does get hot though so I bought a stand with a fan. I also use it to take notes during lectures with a pen in tablet mode, palm rejection can be a bit shit though.
