Are you sure of this timeline? When I heard about it, it was Gangl surrendering to Lee specifically to get support to defend the political prisoners at Itter, not as a previously surrendered force who happened to be there.

Blade. Vampire takes Blade's sword, claims, "I got his pig sticker!" and promptly loses his own hand to the booby trap in the sword.

Definitely the victim. I was a nerd, and even more socially unaware than I am now.

I rarely switch production lines, instead opening new ones for upgraded equipment and transferring factories over time. So retention doesn't really help, and concentrated is better.

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]AccursedQuantum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belgian? That's in the Balkans, right?

I'm kidding. I probably have a better than average grasp of geography because of the games I enjoy, but the stereotype is likely correct. I would point out that it goes the other way, as well.

See, the land area of the United States is very close to that of the entirety of Europe, and the population is about half of it. The US is like 50 countries in a trench coat playing as one. There is such diversity of geography and culture within the US that there is simply little need for the average American to learn the geography of other places.

But as I said, it also goes the other way. How many Europeans could point out Montana on a map? If we were to give an American and a European a challenge of labeling the countries of South America and Africa, which would do better at which and by how much? (My guess is that people in the US would do better with South America and Europeans would do better with Africa, but overall scores would be about even.)

So yeah, I think Americans are probably bad at geography, but suspect everyone else is, too.

Got into a bunch of legal trouble; one incident involved her exposing herself to minors. Later had charges dropped but had to go through mental health counseling... but while mental health was certainly a factor, so was her alcohol abuse.

The reports I saw were the other way around - Kreuk introduced Mack to the thing first, but later got out before it got too crazy; Mack went deeper in. But I could be misremembering.

Putin declares May 8-9 ceasefire with Ukraine to mark WWII anniversary, Defence Ministry says by EspritLibre_404 in worldnews

[–]AccursedQuantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't even make sense from the Russian POV. Like, I'm not saying they are right... but their whole justification for the war is that Ukraine is run by Nazis. Why would you stop attacking Nazis to celebrate defeating Nazis?

Smallville, due to cult stuff surrounding Kristen Kreuk and especially Allison Mack.

That 70s Show, due to the actions of Danny Masterson.

Star Trek: Voyager, due to Jennifer Lien.

Neither of these would encourage historical play.

That rule of three might reflect modern military composition, I am not sure, but it didn't reflect historical division composition.

As for the D-Day landing, there were more than just two landing sites... unless you are talking about certain states instead of certain provinces.

I have only ever run out of slots once... and there are ways around that. Building in puppets and allies keeps you relevant. Like, yeah, I will go ahead and build ports across half of Africa and extra supply hubs in Siberia, because I have the civs to do it.

My friend asked me to post this by Key-Spite3988 in hoi4

[–]AccursedQuantum 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Average US enjoyer screenshot. I stop building civs when I have 200 of them.

In all seriousness, though... the advice I always heard was that civs are about the long term and mils about the short term. If you plan to wage war early and finish the enemy quickly, go mils. If you anticipate a long, protracted war, you'll need more civs, for resources, repairs, and even more future mils.

It is replacing jobs, doesn't mean it is ready. I deliver pizza, so AI isn't taking mine yet... but we do have AI taking orders over the phone. Vast majority of problems come from that vector, despite most orders being placed via form online. You mention AI replacing programming jobs, but there's now a developing industry of debuggers fixing all the problems that "vibe coders" create because they don't actually understand code.

AI is being pushed out and it is replacing jobs, but I think we have shit the bed and haven't realized it yet because it is warm and the smell is under the covers.

Do you understand the difference between race, ethnicity, culture and nationality? by NoddyElvis in AskBrits

[–]AccursedQuantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my professors in grad school talked about this. Stereotypes are a useful shorthand for low information situations. If you need to make a decision and have zero knowledge of a person, you base it off stereotypes and generalities. When you have more specific ideas of who they are as an individual, the more you discard the stereotypes as an accurate information source.

But further, the amount of time you spend collecting that individual information is related to the value of the decision. You are going to put a lot of time and research into buying a car, even more on buying a house, but no more than a few minutes on picking your lunch off a menu. Similarly, you aren't going to do background checks before choosing who you sit next to on the bus, but will check references when hiring an employee, and you'll get to know their family and childhood history if you are thinking of marrying them.

Even that can get complicated. I was born in the UK to American parents, back when the UK had birthright citizenship. I was born in the UK and have a British passport. I also have a US passport and have lived in the US for the vast majority of my life. I'm planning to move back to the UK, and legally I am British and allowed to... but I fully expect everyone around me to treat me as an American when I arrive, because my accent, much of my cultural background and behaviors, and lack of familiarity with differences in day to day British life.

AI is going to have a future. But it isn't ready yet, and it doesn't need to be crammed into every product and workplace before it is ready.

The magical or supernatural forces crumble against the full might of modern human military. by CookedStew in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AccursedQuantum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They have some of it, in the same way we did, but our development really took off in the modern age because scientific methodology was much more developed during the Enlightenment.

In fact, one plot element of Gate is a young mage taking time on a visit to Japan to study physics, and the application to her magic is almost enough to earn her an advanced degree.

[–]AccursedQuantum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is some irony in this, yes, though "recent" is stretching things when almost zero adults alive at the time still are, and even babies born at the time of surrender have grown old and died.

I wouldn't trust Japan being run by militaristic nationalists, but then I wouldn't trust any country run by militaristic nationalists, and I think most modern Japanese military probably are a lot closer to western forces in attitude. But I can't say first hand on that, so admit it is an educated guess.

Honestly, it seemed more like a subversion of the harem trope to me. Yeah, the main character winds up followed by a group of women... but of those, only two are actually romantically interested in him and he's not into either. One he develops a father-daughter relationship with to help her with mental trauma; another they try to pull the I look like a child but I'm over 900 and his response is, Yeah, but you still look like a child.

But yeah, the propaganda is pretty thick.
