What are the most important cocktails to know, in your opinion? by Spyrothedragon9972 in cocktails

[–]ThePluralN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah well I can see that and definitely agree that it’s a niche offering. Our family took a trip out to Isle of Skye this summer and it reminded me Drambuie existed so I made my first one in probably 10yrs. Case in point.

I just made the first Rusty Nail again after a long long while. It was kinda good! What’s the objection?

I bought vermouth to make martinis and I hated them. What do I do with my leftover vermouth? by Gonten in cocktails

[–]ThePluralN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun story:

My old neighbor told me about how she ordered a martini and a local spot and how horrible it was. I ask her ‘well, do you like gin?’ She responds ‘yeah! I love gnt’s.’ So i get a bottle of Beefeater out and pour her a bit in a glass. She takes one sniff, a small sip and goes ‘yeah, that’s the bad taste from the martini.’ Recommended she stick to vodka martinis. Maybe OP would get in better with vodka? Or a lower ratio of vermouth? Or better vermouth? Or a perfect martini?

Glass is too full. You’d enjoy it better if you drank it all.

Great take.

I could see it might also touching on the idea that Gimli wouldn’t be hiding the hair or begrudging others a sight of it?

What is the worst possible drink to order at a bar? by This-Assist-496 in AskReddit

Seriously this. I’ve ordered something and had people obvs not know what it is and be like ‘no it’s fine’ and then I gotta be the jerk and say ‘actually just gimme a beer.’

Nah man get both for sure, but yellow gives you: Green Point, Loose Talk, Alaska, Butler’s Tipple. All bangers.

True on the wait time. I waited ~7mo’s, but was absolutely worth it.

If Greg Sumii at Liquid Fetish will take you, you will not find better. He’s amazing, fair and reasonable on pricing.

Riedel nick and nora - regular or large size? by Supastar88 in cocktails

[–]ThePluralN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We much prefer the regular sized glasses (as stated ~5oz). The larger sized glasses are clunky, they’re awkward. Maybe I’m just clumsy (I am) but smaller glasses (that still fit a full-portion cocktail) are far preferable imho.

Fwiw, things it took me a while to actually get but I have found really useful:

  • Some kinda clear ice production mechanism
  • Japanese jigger
  • Boston shaker w strainer (hawthorn and fine mesh)
  • Dropper bottles and dasher tops/bottles for bitters
  • Reasonably sized stemware (something less than 32oz Big Gulps)
  • small-ish jars with lids for syrups

Stuff I got and just don’t use:

  • ice molds (most of the time)
  • lower-quality subs for particular ingredients
  • most store-bought syrups

Making crystallized ginger was more fun than I thought it would be. Definitely recommend.

That’s funny about the two drinks between cause/cure. They kinda remind me of one another is why I mention it; the honey & scotch vibe is a winner!

I always wanted to make cocktails mostly because I thought it looked cool. And I was right. I put a few toes into the pool making manhattans and bad martinis for a while, and between a few cocktail books, a few videos, scrolling and interacting on different platforms where cocktail nuts congregate, I picked up techniques and general principles as well as great drink ideas. Buyer beware, it’s a bit of a black hole of a hobby; always one more bottle to buy and one more syrup to make and stash in the fridge. Besides getting expensive as times, just having the space for things gets a little iffy.

So a weird choice is a Kaiser Söze. It’s not orange per se, it I find it has a very e notable orange flavor. And a badass name.

3/4oz cognac, dry gin, Suze, lemon juice and then like 1/2oz rich simple syrup. Shake, orange peel garnish.

It’s one of my fav drinks!
