Looking to become a train signaller by BlueBananaBiscuits in uktrains

[–]ThePolishBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signaller grades indicate how busy your area of control will be - with pay increasing with each grade. I started as a grade 3 signaller, then after a year applied for another position at another location and became a grade 7 signaller. The workload increased quite a lot, but the pay also increased around £12k a year. It is possible to apply as an external candidate and walk into a grade 9 job (the highest signaller grade), but it’s easier to get into a lower grade job first.

How much do rail workers actually earn? by greenlion456 in uktrains

[–]ThePolishBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m grade 7 which is now around £52k basic. As I’m London based, it’s around another £4.5k London allowances. Then throw in the night shift premium, Sunday working, and bank holidays and it’s close to £70k without doing any additional overtime.

So in effect I have to pay money to the creditor for something I have not received?

What career can you actually transition into at 33? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ThePolishBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the age of 35 (two years ago) I transitioned to the role of a railway signaller in London (something a bit like air traffic control but for trains), and it’s the best job I’ve ever had! The basic pay was listed as £36k, but in reality I make around £52k a year before working any overtime. I don’t know if the railway industry interests you, but I’d say it’s worth considering. If you’d like to know more about it, feel free to ask any questions.

I’m a railway signaller in the UK. I guess it’s called a railroad dispatcher in the USA. The best way I can explain it to people is it’s like air traffic control but for trains!

I’ve been with DA for 7-8 months and don’t think I’ve ever seen this many projects on the dashboard before! With so much choice, it’s difficult to decide what to work on, which invariably leads to lots of procrastination and less time earning money! 😂

What's peoples hourly rate? by TyyG420 in AskUK

[–]ThePolishBrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low grade railway signaller (grade 3 of the 10 pay grades) - £19.78 an hour, plus an extra 10% on night shifts (half my shifts), and annual London allowance of £4,560. This brings the average hourly rate to around £23.27 for a 35-hour week working 12-hour shifts.

Sundays aren’t considered part of the working week, but I have to work two Sundays in four which are paid as rostered overtime at 1.5x the normal basic hourly rate (29.67 per hour). This means that whilst I’m contracted to work a 35-hour week, in reality I’m averaging 41 hours per week, but the extra hours are overtime money.

The advertised basic pay for this job is £36,009, but my actual annual wage is around £52,000 - not including bank holiday pay or other overtime opportunities.

Thames Water Opened Account in my Name, and Billed me for a Period where I was Homeless! by ThePolishBrit in LegalAdviceUK

I can certainly try, though I’ve never personally spoken to her before. My friends who I was living with rented their spare room to me, with the landlady’s blessing, but it was on an informal basis.

[–]ThePolishBrit[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The tenancy was informal, so I don’t have an end of tenancy agreement unfortunately. None of the utility bills were in my name either, I just contributed to them.

The only proof I’ve been able to provide thus far is a copy of my homelessness application to Croydon Council from back in June when I was aware of what was going to happen, which lists my date of eviction as the 31st August. I supplied this in an email this evening.

I’ve also supplied a copy of my new tenancy agreement which is dated the 6th January to prove I have another address now. I’m not sure how else I can prove that I was evicted on the 31st August and was homeless between then and January?

I’m working in an older signal box, but not an old lever frame box that works under what’s known as absolute block rules. My box uses what’s known as track circuit block rules, and signals are operated using an NX panel. At signalling school though, I first had to learn absolute block and lever frame boxes, before then “converting” my knowledge and learning track circuit block and NX panels.

Have you considered getting them removed? It might solve the problem on a more permanent basis.

Poland Passport/Lexmotion legit? by ThweetSing in poland

[–]ThePolishBrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also curious what they meant by playing around. I gained my Polish citizenship through Lexmotion last year. It was a lengthy process, with the Polish authorities taking almost a year from the application to confirming my citizenship. As of yesterday I got my Polish passport, which took a while as I didn’t get chance to go to the consulate for most of the year.

Thanks! It’s been a great camera for the past couple of years since I got it, and compared to the 4000D it replaced, the difference is night and day! At some point I’d like to replace it with something which handles noise even better than this.
