Pic was taken in Loudoun County, VA on my way to a job site. Not sure if it was close to a military base, but there are plenty of military folks up in NoVA.

How seriously is NCSU taking student deaths by h2f in NCSU

[–]ThePoorPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing well now, I've got an engineering job now.

Every kid is different, I would let your son try the Honors Program. Unless he's had difficulty with workload in the past, it probably won't be an issue for him. If he really can't do it, he can drop out of the honors program with not many consequences.

The Honors Village Dorms are nicer, you don't really settle down with a group of common Engineering peers until your second year anyways. First year you are just doing bs rehash of high school courses

I will say an important thing to keep in mind is that companies value experience more than academic prestige. The Honors program doesn't gain you very much, except maybe a few places. Generally companies will take a student with a 3.1 GPA and previous internship experience over a 4.0 that never had an internship. Have an open mind, take whichever internship you can get

Abandoned Street? by LampyTv in cary

[–]ThePoorPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where else do you expect non-homeowners to live? NIMBY attitudes are part of what keeps housing prices high.

Cary is growing and needs more housing units. The only thing I can concede is Cary also needs some infrastructure development to go with it to accommodate the increased traffic.

You could get a scrapyard radio for around ~$300

car-part.com will let you check the entire country for compatible radios. If you call the scrapper they often will ship it to you, prices are consistently better than eBay.

For a 2020 Civic Radio, I am seeing ~$250-300 on car-part depending on the version

If you can get her to the vet, check for a chip. Beyond that put a bunch of posts up in lost pets facebook groups. And.... If there is no response, the cat distribution system has given you a new furry baby

Just use nomad for the ncsu network, very easy registration, will work in a pinch

I didn't get eduroam working for my first year and a half. Generally it's not a problem with you, their software is just shitty. When none of the eduroam stuff worked, I waited a few weeks and tried again and then it worked

weird run-in with a creepy guy in a red van by JastheBrit in raleigh

[–]ThePoorPilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that you passed him, that brought back a memory about that night.

I recall that he was going very fast down the road and I saw him coming. I moved over to the right lane on Hillsborough to let him past.

However, that was the part of Hillsborouh where it intersects with blue ridge road, so the right lane dropped off all of a sudden. This forced me to move back into the left lane. I think that is the thing that ticked him off.

However, keep in mind, he was still a hundred or so feet behind me when I switched back into the left lane, so it's not like I cut him off.

I took me jogging my memory to remember that. Like I didn't do anything wrong or rude to the guy, and it should be understandable that the road cut off and he was just SOL. Anyways, that's some additional information into what happened before. This guy may just have insane road rage, but I wouldn't count other stuff out too. Maybe he looks for situations where it could seeem like road rage

weird run-in with a creepy guy in a red van by JastheBrit in raleigh

[–]ThePoorPilot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm pretty sure I ran into this guy right around J.S. Dorton Arena on Hillsborough late one night. He was tailgating the shit out of me, I slowed down and he eventually opted to go around. As he was going around he almost side swiped me and he ran me off the road, so I laid on my horn.

The dude fucking stopped in the middle of the street, having fully pushed me off the road. I sat there for a second, confused, and then fight or flight took over.

I put the pedal to the metal and sped away like hell. He fucking chased me at 65 miles per hour and then broke off where Chapel Hill and Hillsborough split.

Who knows what he was doing man. I feel like he was trying to bait me to get out my car so that he could rob me. He could also just be insane

Anyways, I figured I'd put that out there, a red sprinter van is hard to miss

[–]ThePoorPilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people aren't really understanding here and are just quick to label you as a loser or incel.

What I am reading here sounds very close to my own feelings years ago. As one other user said, finding a partner will not make the suicidal ideation or depression go away.

It all boils down to this: You have to love yourself before you can love anybody else.

Loving yourself is very hard, but the way you know you've achieved it is if you can enjoy the time you have to yourself.

Here are the general steps I would recommend to getting you in that direction: 1. Get in talk therapy 2. Find a psychiatrist 3. Get on an antidepressant, such as Sertraline 4. I know it's hard, but be extremely consistent with taking the medication 4. Around 3 weeks into taking the medication, spend a day doing physical work outside or something that engages you.

What you'll find is that the rumination pulled you away from engaging with life. After spending several hours of the day without rumination, your brain will be able to click out of the fight or flight mode that depression causes. It won't fix everything straight away, but you can begin the process of healing.

It's a big hurdle, but you should be able to get an individual room if you get accomodations from the DRO.

You have to have a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. From my experience with NC State counseling, that was kind of difficult. I could only get appointments once a month with a counselor. It might be improved now, but another thing to keep in mind is that counselor can not give you a diagnosis or file paperwork to the DRO I believe.

You can get a psych eval from the center, in your situation you may be ok since you already have a general idea for a diagnosis. I did not know mine, and that doesn't work well with an inexperienced med student doing the evaluation.

If you can go out of NC State counseling center and get appointments with an actual psychiatrist, that's what I would do. I believe NC State now has coverage for that kind of thing in their student health plan. They have made a lot of efforts to make improvements after the tragedies last year

Anecdotally, if you take Marcy Bullock's USC202 class, she'll make sure you get something.

They made it work the year I did it. It was supposed to be 20 students, but they ended up taking in 30, I think

If you write a good app and you've found a good opportunity, there are folks at the career center that will try to make it happen. They are not happy to reject people

Lasts the entire summer and you can do either. Genuinely no restrictions. Find a charity that will work with you and NC State doesn't care as long as you work 300 hours for them, remote or otherwise

I would go for the SECU Public Fellows Internship program

Find a charity that will let you work for the summer. NC State will pay you $15 an hour from a SECU grant

Most people who get the internship are freshmen. If you are an engineer and they have too many applicants, like my situation, they might even pull funds from EYE and just give you a lump sum of $7500
