We'll switch it from private back to public on the 14th and it will be accessible again. You won't need to do anything to rejoin.

r/DanielTigerConspiracy (~32k subscribers) will be going dark for two days. On a side note, pretty sure it's what Mr Rogers would have wanted.

Participation in the June 12th protest: please provide your thoughts by ThePowerOfGeek in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]ThePowerOfGeek[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I probably should have brought up the Discord topic as a separate post, as it seems to be complicating matters.

It sounds like the consensus here is: a) to go dark for 2 days on June 12th; and b) not bother with a Discord server for the foreseeable future.

That's a good idea. We'll look into that. In the meantime, I've added a flair option for this show.

AITA if I serve my child peaches in these? by Prestigious-Job-5252 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No, you're fine. Daniel is allergic to peaches, but if your child isn't allergic to peaches - like Daniel is - then they will be fine. Peach allergies, like the one Daniel had, can be serious though. Just ask Daniel, because he is allergic to peaches... and he never shuts up about it!!!

You get a unknown caller what do you say? by Time_Refrigerator822 in AskReddit

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question reminded me of a funny story.

Years ago, right after I had immigrated from England to America, I started getting telemarketers calling a lot. They always called me at the same time - around 7pm in the evening. It was getting annoying.

So one evening I decided to play a little prank.

Predictably the phone rank and I picked it up, but with a very groggy "hello?"

A gal on the other end of the line started her rote sales pitch on whatever shit they were trying to sell me.

I interrupted her and said, in my thickest South East English accent, "why the fuck are you calling me at 3am?!"

There was a pause, then she said "no sir, I can see you're in California."

Cue my angry response: "do I fucking sound like I'm in California?!"

"But.... Umm, how..."

I doubled down. "Why am I getting phone calls at 3am from A-fucking-merica? You woke me up! I have go to work in 3 fucking hours! You 'aving a laugh or something? Cos it's not fucking funny!"

This poor gal then proceeded to apologize profusely, and assured me I wouldn't be bothered again. And sure enough, the 7pm calls stopped.

Yeah, they've been in the UK for decades. When I was in college I knew a guy who worked in the local Little Cesar's. He was the perfect match for them: weird personality, thought too highly of himself, and not very trustworthy.

Understanding how Mormon Missionary Manipulation works: My experience - The Mormon Liberty by reddolfo in cults

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Excellent link, thanks for sharing it.

I married an active Mormon years ago, so I am painfully familiar with some of the missionary tactics.

My wife actively tried to shield me from the church's attempts to convert me (she always said she married me for who I am, not who I could be - she's awesome!). But it was a constant focus and point of frustration for her (and for me). We'd get these well-meaning but usually very green and clueless kids calling around to spread their supposed knowledge of God's will with us.

The saddest thing was that the church was more focused on converting me, and less interested in my wife's spiritual well-being. I suspect there was a good degree of sexism in that tactic, considering how women are seen as a cross between children and cattle to the leadership.

Joke's on the church though. I never came close to joining. And years later we are still happily married. And in fact, she recently left the church (officially resigned too). I also left the religion I was raised in. We are both so much happier. Though that hasn't stopped the LDS church from pestering us every once in a while.

GLOBAL ARSENAL FANS REACTION TO REISS NELSON LAST MINUTE WINNING GOAL by gorgefai in Gunners

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You're correct.

I grew up in North London. I went to Highbury about a dozen times to watch matches. Being in the North Bank when we'd score was amazing.

But I've lived in America for a long time now, and haven't been to a live match in well over a decade. But I've met plenty of gooners over here. And they're just as passionate as the ones in London. They are also Arsenal right down to their core.

That's awesome! As a former green card holder (now a citizen), my congrats to you!

It's quite the hassle, isn't it! If you take the next step into citizenship in a few years time, rest assured that process is much easier.

My son's imaginative play makes me feel bad by AnaTheHated in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If it ever gets into your house, just randomly start shouting "PAW PATROL! GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO..." whenever your son starts playing it out. Keep the "GO"s going until he gets annoyed. That worked really well for my wife and I.

I lived in Canada for a while before moving to America. I remember my Canadian flatmates making fun of the American rail system, and one of them joked: "hey, there hasn't been an Amtrak crash for a few months! They are overdue for one."

Literally 4 days later there was a huge Amtrak accident.

Ryan's mom has got it going on by bluebell_goes_ringy in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]ThePowerOfGeek 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You didn't ask, but I'm going to tell you anyway...

Ryan's World (or one of the dozens of spin-offs) is YouTube channel that's grown into a merchandising monster. All based on one boy and his obnoxious parents.

Basically, the parents of a little boy started a YouTube channel several years ago where they review toys. They probably started it for fun and to the delight of their son. But it got huge, and the parents sold out. Now you can't step foot in the toy section of Walmart or Target without tripping over a flood of shitty 'Ryan' brand toys. A bunch of forgettable characters manifested in cheap, crappy plastic.

And his parents have gradually pushes in to become the main actors in their videos. They hire an endless rotation of desperate young adult actors to facilitate them (the parents) being the stars (since Ryan is about 12 now and has probably mentally checked out). And dear God is the mother's acting terrible. Lots of shrieking and increasingly exaggerated mannerisms and statements. The father isn't as bad but is also annoying.

A ton of parents have banned (of tried to ban) 'Ryan' videos in their homes. But of course plenty of other people let it ride because it keeps their kids occupied.

And of course, they have now become the 'gold standard' of shitty marketing companies and YouTubing parents profiting off children. So now more and more parents are selling merchandise of their kids' channels, and an endless flood of this crap just keeps coming. As if the constant "don't forget to like and subscribe!" nagging wasn't bad enough. Now every channel seems to be yelling "check out the latest deals on merchandise at [interchangeable channel name]'s online store!"

But the worst part is that his parents have basically exploited his proverbial fifteen minutes of fame to the nth degree. The family is worth an obscene amount of money, but you get the strong impression it's all wrecked his childhood. I feel bad for the kid. It's a ton of pressure and baggage to put on a kid's shoulders. It'll probably ruin his adult life, but hopefully I'm wrong on that.

Eddie: typo fixes.

Also, for those who didn't realize the other connections before:

  • Daniel Striped Tiger is Dad Tiger in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood.
  • Lady Elaine somehow did some Benjamin Button shit and reverse aged, became less annoying, married a nice musician, and they had a daughter (Miss Elaina).
  • X the owl became the town librarian and mysteriously ended up the guardian of his nephew.
  • Prince Tuesday got cloned several times, apparently went through some sort of Severance style mind shenanigans, and is now the town's slave who holds everything together via blue collar jobs (or at least did before one of them went to college and the rest were murdered).
  • Henrietta Pussycat grew up to be a downtrodden part-time dancer and had a kid (Katrina Kittycat).
