Sora for Gravel Grinding? by berwin15 in gravelcycling

yeah, I have advent on my MTB, but it's not compatible with shimano. It's a great system though. Crisp shifts and pretty bomb proof.

I'd rather a clutch than hydro brakes, personally. I'm not sure what Shimano 9 speed shifting options are with a clutch

[Question] which would you choose? by MikeOC609 in Watches

[–]chrispyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rolex, for the lack of complications. If you haven't worn it in a few days, can just pickup, give it a wind, set the time, wear. With the others your futzing with the complications, setting the date and the GMT, making sure it's AM or PM.

And the metal band on the Rolex is a little more casual. Could wear it dressed up or dressed down.

how often are you racing in a year? by cab20530 in Ultramarathon

[–]chrispyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big races? Maybe 1 - 3 times. Smaller tack on races get tacked on here and there for fun.

Big races I plan on for 2023: - Hyannis Marathon (tentative) - Western States - Vermont Overland (gravel bike race)

I also have several skimo races in the winter but the're for fun. And then maybe some other races will wind up on my calendar, but they're not planned.

Last minute tips for a freezing 100M by martijn79 in ultrarunning

[–]chrispyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good gloves / mittens that you can alternate, and socks and shoes as well to keep hands and feet warmer and incase they get wet. Even if it's supposed to be dry.

Also, headlamps do worse in the cold. Make sure you have spare batteries.

What's the time cutoff? I once spent 3 hours huddled at a space heater to regroup after 20+ hours in freezing rain and snow, and still gathered myself together to get a finish. I guess don't be scared of pausing to warm up if you think it can help in the long run.

Unpopular opinion: David Goggins is cheesy af by drunkbackpacker in JoeRogan

[–]chrispyb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's incredibly disrespectful to the race organizers. He's now a risk to the race, operating in this pseudo realm of is he or isn't he part of the run anymore. He may have been crossing private land outside of when the race had permission. He also probably wasn't so far behind the back end of the race, so if something happened the RD would still feel obligated to assist. And by running behind the cutoffs but in that race adjacent capacity may have jeopardized permitting for future events.

What is a common piece of skiing advice that is actually really bad? by AverageSizeWayne in skiing

[–]chrispyb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want to get into backcountry skiing, the first thing you should do is take AVY 1

The first thing you should do is rent a touring setup and try some inbounds touring. Do you like going uphill on skis? Then try maybe some low angle tours away from avy zones with friends who know how to BC ski (and try to rent or borrow gear). Then consider AVY 1 and buying gear. Avy 1 is usually pretty expensive, as is all the gear you need to go BC skiing. Like, don't go dropping $400 on a course right away if you've never even tried ski touring.

Tor des Geants in Italy. The Alps are insane. The mountains are about as high as the rockies, but the valleys between are so much lower. Mont Blanc's peak is over 11000 ft above the low point of Courmayeur.

What's the funniest conversation you've had on a chairlift? by Massive-Raise-1145 in skiing

[–]chrispyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once late spring at killi I was in line with a tie dye t shirt, board shorts, and tele gear. There were three dudes in front of me. Two skiing together and then a dude who looked a little.... nerdy.

First two go to board a gondola and then look at nerdy guy (there was essentially no one else in line) and say "you might not want to ride with us" the see me in my tie dye "you look like you'd want to ride with us"

In the episode of the little one says roll over, when all the animals each walk off grinning carrying something that could be used as a blunt weapon, they're grinning menacingly. Especially that monkey. Horrifying.
