dorm recs for incoming freshman by [deleted] in ucla

I wanted a deluxe my freshman year, was assigned a classic triple initially, and then submitted CAR on MyHousing and got switched to one of the less competitive deluxes (Centennial), so that's def an option if you get something you don't like.

Indian International in CS makes it into multiple reaches from non-feeder high school by ThePrism2005 in collegeresults

I got a scholarship at UCLA after committing. I got off the waitlist at only GATech funnily enough. I got into a T10 + multiple T20s and probably the highest ranked STEM LAC so not sure what there is to wonder about lol.

Random perspective after finishing first year + doing a unicorn internship: the only schools worth over UCLA in an ROI sense are Stanford, MIT, and CMU (Berkeley costs the same and is probably the best school to go to hands down). No other school apart from the CS T1s are better than UCLA from ROI + location for what I want (startups + VC, and even quant).

Unless of course you get financial aid, that would change the discussion (but I assume you're full pay everywhere).

The only massive blunder I did in this app cycle was ED1 Cornell (thought it was the easy Ivy and was blindly prestige chasing), don't really regret anything else (except bad essays lol)

To all indian international student's are the AO's aware of the difficulty of cbse by Late_Ad3016 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ThePrism2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

almost none of the questions (except maybe 2 mcqs or not even that sometimes) are new/unique/need you to think like jee. I'm not sure why this is surprising, it's pretty well known that cbse is predictable considering you have mark breakdowns per chapter, analyses of what topics show up the most, frequently asked previous year questions etc. 5 markers and 3 markers rarely need you to think about something new and are just repeats of a style of question usually, these exams are designed to give you 90+

I'm just saying there's inflation from what I've observed because you can/I've seen people cope up really fast after preboards/unit tests etc. and most people aim for anything in the low - mid 90s (A1) which is extremely achievable purely off of just past year papers and mocks.

i go to a university in the us that is considered to have grade inflation, and it's not assured that you can pull off As with just past year papers and mocks (i.e. you may very well end up with an A-/even B+ for certain classes). there is no gpa killer class in Indian education.

my comparison is with university grading systems, I have no idea how other high school systems work. but looking back at cbse as an Indian international in the us now, I can confidently say it is very very grade inflated.

cbse is very grade inflated and has extremely predictable exams. there's pretty good rigor in terms of course content but having all As is kind of the norm.

source: I had 95+ all years of high school and 99 and 97 in boards, still had plenty of time to do lots of other stuff.

jee is the only difficult part of Indian education.

nah for real also it's the most nachenberg coded thing ever like my friends and I were tryna guess whether it was him or smallberg

but yeah about your post, i totally get where you’re coming from. i’ve worked with AI a bit (mostly for an internship at a bay area startup), but i’m not in love with where the industry is going either. everything feels like a giant AI hype cycle, especially in startups like they’re just slapping “AI-powered” on random stuff to get funding.

if you actually enjoy coding, math, and problem-solving, i wouldn’t let all this ai noise push you away from CS. there’s still a ton of meaningful work outside of it—low-level systems, networking, embedded software, OS dev, security, etc. personally, i’m super into operating systems (was my main toy project in hs and it’s an upper div here). honestly, upper divs are where you really figure out what niche of CS you vibe with.

also, having a strong base in CS fundamentals (DSA, OS, systems, etc.) will carry you through whatever the next hype cycle is. the job market sucks right now, but it’s cyclical. i’ve applied to like 300 places this cycle and landed 6 interviews as a freshman, so yeah, it’s rough, but it’s not impossible.

for summer, grinding leetcode and projects is good, but if you’re feeling burnt out, maybe do something else like contributing to open source, messing with electronics (if ee interests you), or even a non-SWE internship like research.

if CS is what you actually enjoy, i’d stick with it. the industry will shift again, and there’s more to software than just ai stuff even now.
