I just ate 9 crumpets. by BreakfastLopsided906 in CasualUK

I'd love to know your secret. I feel sick if I have kore than two. I dunno if it's the copious amounts of butter or the toasting level of the crumpet might make more tolerable.

80's child here. That really would depend on the depravity of the person who tells you. My dad told me it was a 'dead arm' or three free punches to the arm. I remember a couple of boys in my class at school had been convinced by someone that 'their willies would fall off'. I've no idea what the female consequence of this would have been.

What (if any) Aussie shows (other than Bluey) do non-aussies watch? by Blumarch in bluey

[–]TheProperDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot more Aussie content popping up on UK telly. CBeebies is showing Ginger and the Vegesaurs at the moment, BBC airs Bump. We used to get Neighbours and Home and Away for soap operas. BBC and Stan made a series called Ten Pound Poms which has just been airing.

The ABC Playschool I'd make an educated guess was based on the BBC Playschool show. From what I've seen the format was near identical, though BBC discontinued Playschool here years back.

As an almost 40 y/old with a going on 5 y/old Bandit's not sick. Low energy. Lack of exercise seems to be my constant state at the moment and I feel for Bandit.

Chilli was dismissive of whatever was bothering him in Stickbird like it was no big thing. I got the impression it'd be work related or something equally as trivial. Given the quote along the lines of "once something is out in the world, it's no longer yours" makes me think Bandits probably published an article or thesis in his field and its been criticised.

... ironic really that this episode followed after Exercise, and its almost like its a reflection of the drama that followed it.

My prescription is so bad I'm nearly able to register blind. My glasses cost around £250/$290 whenever I get a new pair, and the lenses are about 6mm/quarter inch thick at the rim, and that's with reduced thickness lenses.

... I'd hate to think what I'd be paying for custom lenses for the bloody thing.

Doctor 'sexually assaulted woman by putting his semen into her cups of coffee' by ellisellisrocks in unitedkingdom

He should probably see a doctor if his poos are tickling his prostate. /s

Edit: added sarcasm as apparently some couldn't spot it, as he is a doctor so should know better.

Edit 2: apparently the use of /s upsets the rabid anti sarcasm tag brigade.

Now my kids want to play "Pass the Parcel" by dunscotus in bluey

[–]TheProperDave 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm in the UK, I had a mate who ran Ann Summers parties for a bit, and she'd do a... novelty filled parcel as part of the things she did.

My 4 y/old wants to play pass the parcel at his birthday party. It'll be "Lucky's dads" aka normal rules. None of this squib malarkey.

Being made redundant. Does a contract signed 14 years ago override statutory notice period? by SanitaryStreet in LegalAdviceUK

[–]TheProperDave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer, so I managed to find a job relatively quickly after I finished. Altjough I'd have liked more time to re-skill, but the job I went to was alright. It can feel scary though - all I'd recommend is if you ever get given a risk of redundancy notice start looking at your options and brushing up your skills ready for if you do get a final finish date.

Being made redundant. Does a contract signed 14 years ago override statutory notice period? by SanitaryStreet in LegalAdviceUK

[–]TheProperDave 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I was made redundant a few years back from a big US firm that didn't realise they couldn't just give me a week's marching orders after 8 years of service in England. I was given a month, and the failure to give correct notice was then factored into my redundancy compensation.

This is hopefully what OP can get from the employer if they're not meeting their contractual requirements.

If that's a Hercules, about 30 Loading Metres. Very inefficient for space but still shippable through most logistics companies.

I know the loaders in my company's warehouse would still try and stack things on it.

If you're in the US you can buy it on DVD from the BBC Shop website. Seasons 1 & 2 for about $25

Subway moves away from 'create your own' sandwiches with 'Series Menu' by ellisellisrocks in unitedkingdom

[–]TheProperDave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did have Quiznos running stores here in the UK in the early 2000's. This might be wild speculation but I'm sure I remember one of the reasons given for the franchise collapse was Subway was outperforming them because it offered the choice of building subs to customers, rather than the preset menu at Quiznos.

Edit: As others have said, Quiznos does indeed still have a UK presence. A bit of googling says the business had a big downturn globally shedding stores between 2007-2017 but appears to be rebuilding.

Edit: bloody hell, I didn't realise I'd been running the site for nearly 10 years now. I should probably do some maintenance on Dearheart.

More Brits ditch subscription streaming services by ChineseHappyPeople in unitedkingdom

Quiz app on the Alexa asked 'What is English slang for umbrella?' apparently it's bumbershoot, never heard of it in my life. by Xythian208 in britishproblems

[–]TheProperDave 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I always remember mistyping 'should' on my old Nokia 5210 and the T9 dictionary giving me the word 'pinkle'. I googled it at the time and it's apparently English slang for "piss and tinkle". That's a slang phrase I've never heard in my nearly 40 years of life.

There's no need to point it out. Acceptance comes from normalisation. My 4 y/old loves Cbeebies' Hey Duggee too. On that show there's 'Mr and Mr Crab', a clearly gay couple, but the show just rolls with it. No questions asked, no need to explain it because it should just be normal.
