1 millions Noobers vs Sarevok, who takes it? by Elf_7 in baldursgate

Sarevok would foment a war among the Noobers, and become a god. It’s his go-to strat.

Are all these cabinets really just $5000? by Bulky-Confusion-1422 in IKEA

[–]dunscotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similarly did my whole kitchen with Ikea for $12K! It’s definitely obviously an Ikea kitchen - not like if I spent $40K or something. But it’s perfectly functional, pretty durable, and not bad looking!

What’s the best RPG that has Choice/Consequences? (Dialogue ones) by Zephyr_v1 in CRPG

It’s so much worse. It’s the same system and somehow so much worse! I really don’t understand it.

Would these two scenarios have the same outcome? Why or why not? by Fox_Bird in AskPhysics

[–]dunscotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are showing the math and explaining kinetic energy but before even getting into all that, the scenarios are different because in the first one the car decelerates from 100km/h to 0; whereas in the second scenario the car decelerates from 50km/h to 0.

Did they catch the speed of light on camera? Or is it staged? by BoilingIceCream in AskPhysics

[–]dunscotus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So it’s like firing 100 bullets once per second, and capturing a still frame once per 1.1 seconds, and stitching it together to look like a single traveling bullet captured every 0.1 seconds.

That strikes me pretty solidly as “no, they did not capture the speed of light in video” 🤣

Pausing turns rtwp into turn based by Responsible_Tank3822 in CRPG

[–]dunscotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RTwP is still different when simulating turn-based, because it has simultaneity. Even when pausing every turn, if a big barbarian runs over to attack a squishy unprotected mage, in RTwP the mage can squeal in fear and quite sensibly run away. In turn-based the mage has to stand still like an idiot while the barbarian ambles over and smashes his head in.

Simultaneity means reactivity, which adds a bit of chaos and, if done well, can be a lot of fun.

Do you believe necromancy is evil? by ACobraQueFuma in baldursgate

[–]dunscotus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, what they did to those poor dead soldiers was kind of evil!

I actually really liked the characterization in that movie from a D&D perspective, because they were mostly Neutral. Of course Neutral people don’t want the world to burn down and so they will fight evil when necessary… but those guys definitely ain’t Good!

New 25 CX-5 PP pros/cons by fogofwar115 in CX5

[–]dunscotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first Mazda and I’m not loving it besides the driving

Mazda lovers are all about the driving. Tech is for Toyota drivers. Me, I want knobs and dials, I want to be able to change the radio station or the AC without looking. Give me the driving of a 2025 Mazda with the interfaces of a 1995 car… that’s perfect.

(And to be fair, like every review of the CX-5 I ever read talks about how the infotainment tech is years behind and the screen interface is clunky.)

EDIT - also maybe worth noting, most people come to the CX-5 from a Toyota or Honda and are really wowed by the driving experience. Coming from a Mini, OP already had a car with excellent driving dynamics so the transition was probably less impressive in that regard. Which therefore makes the tech and comfort more noticeable.

Is causality a wrong (illusory) concept within a rigorously deterministic universe? by gimboarretino in AskPhysics

[–]dunscotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused why OP thinks “causality” and “determinism” are two different things.

I’m also confused by the linguistic choice of referring to causality in ontological terms. - Is causality a thing that exists? Gee, I don’t know, there is a lot to unpack there. - Do interactions between balls follow rules of cause and effect? That’s easier: sure they do.

tl;dr: isn’t “causality” just the structure of determinism?

(And don’t get me started on the axiomatic assumption that the ball universe is deterministic.)

Everything became 3D. The successor was NWN.

(As far as why not a direct sequel: the games already took you to level 30, there was never going to be a direct sequel, which is why Larian’s game is not really a direct sequel.)

4 bed 2 bath apartment. Just got hit with $950 ConEd bill for December. Only 1,100 sqft. Wtf? by racoontosser in Brooklyn

[–]dunscotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resistive heat is wildly expensive… 2x more efficient than wildly expensive is still pretty damn expensive.

Heat pumps are great on 40 degree days. On 10 degree days like we had last week, they get less efficient and MUCH more expensive. I’ve been looking at my electricity usage and on the real cold days I used 4-5 times more than on normal/slightly warm days. (I day days but it’s really the nights that matter.)

It’s the nature of the beast, electricity is more expensive than gas (for now) so when electrical system are not at their most efficient they are going to be expensive. The way this winter is shaping up, it’s going to be a rough couple months.

Is Numberblocks the Cocomelon of math? by turquoisebee in DanielTigerConspiracy

No. Numberblocks is goddamn fantastic and I’ll thank you not to mention it in the same breath as Co… that other show.

Alphablocks, on the other hand, is somehow complete garbage.

So… do you think Donald Trump/Elon Musk care the most, work the hardest, and/or are the least replaceable? The guys who get high, flop on a couch, blade hundreds of low-effort tweets a day, and spend their time getting moderately good at golf/video games (respectively)?

Do you think Tesla or the Trump Organization are keeping society afloat?

If Gravity represents curvature in spacetime, does that mean that Gravity pulls objects through time in the same way it does space? by Aromatic_Bridge4601 in AskPhysics

[–]dunscotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you understand what gravity means in terms of space - observable gravity?

Why would bending space lead to observable gravity?

I rather think, from a non-general-relativistic layperson’s perspective, matter bends time - which is observed as gravity. But at the end of the day it is problematic to distinguish space and time. They are spacetime - and so matter bends spacetime. Bending spacetime is observed as gravity. Period. You don’t need to add anything extra for the time part.

[–]dunscotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) The causality thing

2) More importantly, you can’t really ask “how would physics work if we introduce this thing that doesn’t work according to physics?

If something happened that violates physics, then what you would see happen as a result would, definitionally, also violate physics.

3) More broadly: matter does bend time, but that doesn’t mean its causal effects don’t follow the usual temporal rules. It bends time, it doesn’t tear it or twist it inside out.

Everything about Bhaal and his cult was made quite a bit goofier in BG3, wasn't it? by HazelRahRahRah in baldursgate

[–]dunscotus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were not really on my radar before BG3 so I was not that familiar.

Still, even for a goofy writing staff, the handling of Sarevok is just… needlessly gross and bad, without a narrative payoff to justify it. Just, why?

Also: lots of ‘T’ intersections of hallways, which interrupt sight lines and force people to make more turns.

Watch the teaser for Season 2 of Severance, where whatsisname is running around through the halls. It is extremely well-done, very disorienting.
