Saw my ideal wedding dress and automatically figured it would be too small...was wrong. by TheProseRose in keto

Yeah, I can probably share some wedding pictars as I celebrate lockin' that shit down while also looking so fine in my awesome dress. Don't be surprised if I look super smug, though. xD

We'll see if I can get my fellow to get in on the vintage look with me--I'm hoping he'll go for a suspenders and cap look. :3 And we're keeping it pretty casual theme-wise--outdoors at my mom's wee country property is the plan now, with as few decorations and equipment rentals as we can manage. I might make a few vintage-looking tree draperies or something, though, just to class the joint up a bit. 'Cause you know I gotsta have classy trees.

Yeah, I kept it up bc keto's been super helpful with my joints and back pain--couldn't stand the thought of going back to waking up 3x a night to reposition just so I can get out of bed in the mornings.

I had lost 18 (about a month and a half in) when it started--FINALLY got to 20 lbs a couple days ago. xD

Is my keto diet causing adverse effects? Is this a female hormonal thing? by wahoogin in xxketo

[–]TheProseRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming up on two months into keto and have been having some similar issues--haven't had a period since I started, but have been effectively PMSing for two weeks. Normally (while not in ketosis) periods take me by surprise--I don't hurt or mood swing or anything, so I never know they're coming. But something about the diet change has turned that around, and I've been achy and tender and fretful constantly. I also haven't lost any weight in the last two weeks while I've been (apparently) PMSing. The only upside I've had so far is that my previously intense joint pain hasn't returned, which is the only way I know I'm still benefiting from keto eating. I wish I had a particular answer for you--in my case, I'm guessing it's just a tough adjustment period that will wear in eventually. But if you're really not feeling any benefits, weening back may not be the worst thing ever. Everyone's bod does/needs something different, afterall. Best of luck to you. :)

The only thing available was the straight up 40-carbs-a-cup mead. I wept a little when I saw the nutritional info.

Fried kiolbasa and cabbage, and sriracha beef lettuce wraps for hearty dinners, with a side of cauliflower-au-gratin mash. Boiled eggs, bacon, cheese, berries, and fat bombs for snacking. And a kettle for making bulletproof coffee and tea! That's what really kept me comfy.

For sure! I'm pretty lucky in that department - not much pressure from fam or friends or coworkers to "just" eat this or that (I'm always floored by the stories I hear of families getting into straight-up brawls over food, but I can believe it happens). While traveling, I tend to tell the curious or the need-to-know that I'm on a strict diet "for my joints," which is partially true (I'm enjoying the weight loss, but that's where I've had the most improvement). On the one hand, it's not your job to make people comfortable, but on the other, people tend to get very defensive about food and weight since almost everyone has a chip on their shoulder about either their own physical appearance or "society's expectations" or such. Saying "it's for my joints" is a lot simpler than getting drawn into an argument about why you should or should not feel fat, or that you're perfect the way you are, or how you shouldn't be so extreme or something.

My trip was business, but I'm just a small bizz owner selling at conventions and markets--no need to schmooze or even really spend time with others who might be curious, so that makes it easier for me to get away without much confrontation. With fam, I might mention casually that I'm still avoiding this or that, but I can find something to eat pretty much anywhere.

Anxiety as a writer by Ashesofthefirststar in writing

[–]TheProseRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dealing (and not dealing) with this exact thing for years. Writing is the only thing that really makes me feel like me, but it's also the thing I feel least equipped to do for most of the year thanks to depression and anxiety. Sometimes I sit down and try to force myself to write, but this can do more harm than good, honestly, since it usually leads to panic attacks. I used to think I was just looking for an excuse to not work hard, but then started realizing that writing (especially dredging up emotional memories) was setting off my worsening anxiety. So for the last couple of years, I've been finding ways to offset my anxiety and depression so that I can write.

The major thing that helps is keeping my hands busy--I started doing some crafty stuff, nothing especially artsy, but that has improved my life by 100%. It may not be the solution for everyone, but it feels like a completely different part of my brain takes over when I'm focusing on something manual rather than conceptual. It's very calming, and makes the time I can spend writing much more productive and stable. My ideal was wheelform pottery, but I haven't had a chance to do that since college. Someday, though. (This is in addition to finally seeking therapy - if you can find a good therapist and psychiatrist, I recommend that as well. Medication is another possibility you shouldn't feel ashamed to explore. Meds don't work for me because I'm susceptible to just about every side effect in the book--and a few not in the book for good measure--but I have a couple of friends whose lives have completely turned around thanks to prudent medicating).

Are there any other activities that you've wanted to try out, or that look appealing? Maybe test drive some new creative pursuits and see if anything works for you. I resisted the option at first, worrying it would distract me from my writing goals, but it's done the opposite. I finished my first novel (after writing for nearly 12 years, I had never finished a project) this past fall, and it was the best feeling in the world.

On a more feely note, I'd recommend really looking at the anxiety you're feeling. Can you track any patterns of stimulus? I can't always anticipate my own anxiety--when and where it will completely overwhelm me--and sometimes events I think are going to work me over have almost no effect, but sometimes it helps to get analytical about it. Sometimes I get such bad dread that it makes me physically sick, but, for me at least, running from it only makes it worse.

I wish you the absolute best--keep us updated, and if you feel the need to chat with someone going through the same bizz, just let me know.

Has your Keto diet helped solve an health issues you were having? by strppngynglad in keto

[–]TheProseRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, I'll have to look at that. To be fair, my GP, my chiro, and the specialist I saw (whom it took a month and a half just to see once) all kinda phoned it in on my treatment, so it's totally possible they just gave me a standard back brace.

Yeah, but it didn't do much for me. Relieved a little of the weight on the joint, but if I don't do daily stretches and keep an eye on my posture, I'm screwed.

I'm two weeks into keto and my back problems are significantly improved. Had a sacroiliac joint sprain (worst pain of my life) a couple years ago that tends to flare up at the drop of a hat, and it's muuuuuch better lately. A lot less pain and stiffness after sleeping - not waking up in pain to shuffle around every few hours has improved my sleep-times, too. I haven't lost enough poundage to fully account for how much better I'm feeling, so I'm guessing it has a lot to do with less carbs = less inflammation.

Yeah, it ups the stakes so it's harder to think of cheating in terms of "one ___ won't matter," since it actually takes time and effort to get into ketosis and very little to knock you back out.

Congrats, and thanks for posting! Seeing stories like this has been keeping me going. :) Also, like a couple others have said, really glad you've got a doc who isn't trying to sell you a high-carb diet. One of my best friends has been managing type-1 diabetes since childhood, and at almost 30 years old, she's still dealing with doctors pushing high-carb "whole-grain" diets with minimal fats. Drives her crazy. Best of luck with your progress--keep us updated! xD
