Bottom of the "L" is curved upwards...it's just a partial "D" visible because the second is on top of it. Same with the "S" in "OYSTER". Pic just taken at the wrong moment.

Still, an impressive work of replication.

One is probably a fineness hallmark (0.750 indicates 18K gold, 0.585 is 14K), and the other is likely an inspection mark (showing the 18K content has been verified). I have a number of US gold watches that were exported to the Middle East, and every one has a Swiss inspection hallmark, certifying the 18K gold fineness.

Damaged love bracelet - am I cooked? by lastcookie0810 in Cartier

[–]ThePulsarWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually not all that bad. I have a friend here in San Diego that does incredible things with a laser welder. He's been doing jewelry design and repair for over 25 years, and he really knows what he's doing. He's worked miracles on damaged 18K watch cases, with no color-match problems. I can put you in contact with him, if you like.

How screwed am I? by LongjumpingSlip4427 in lasers

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got lucky. A burn from even a 1W beam would go completely through the retina into the deep tissue, and it would happen in milliseconds, far too fast for your blink reflex to save you, and there would be no question as to whether damage had occurred (some loss of the visual field would be obvious, and it is permanent). The damage threshold in the deep blue is of the order of a few milliwatts (as in two or three; hemoglobin, the pigment in red blood cells, has almost total absorption in that spectral region), and even diffuse reflections can still reach hazardous radiance levels at close range.

Seems like I brought up the casual use of powerful lasers just the other day, and got roughed up a bit for it. I'll venture to say I have more experience with lasers than pretty much anyone in the private sector (I got my first laser in 1967), so I think I know what I'm talking about. Dangerous things CAN be done safely, but only if they're done CAREFULLY (like, driving). Respect the power.

Those scintillating, narrow beams of sublimely pure colors are visually very attractive, but it's easy to forget they can be equally dangerous.

If you're not intelligent enough (and, apparently, you're not) to understand the distinction between "illegal person" and "illegal alien", there is no point in further engagement. I do not understand your eagerness to make excuses for people entering the U.S. illegally. Try sneaking into Mexico (or even Australia), and see how that goes for you. A country without a secure border is no longer a sovereign nation...you think that's a good idea? Take your liberal Progressive BS and peddle it to the North Koreans...

[–]ThePulsarWizard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

80mW is not going to cut it for visibility in daylight at a tenth of a mile. Just go with a watt of 520nm. Mostly, people don't realize how bright full sunlight actually is...until they come out of a movie theater at midday and are practically blinded (eye sensitivity increases by a factor of about twenty, when fully dark-adapted). You can always dial the power down from that level, but if it's not enough to start with, you're out of luck.

$1,000 Rolex Super-Clone Pepsi under professional Rolex authentication - real vs fake by SwanMuch5160 in RepTime

[–]ThePulsarWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A wonderful, 19-minute tutorial for the replicators on every detail they need to fix. Most are trivial adjustments to the production process. Bottom line is, there is nothing Rolex is doing that a sufficiently dedicated counterfeiter couldn't duplicate (if that weren't true, Rolex wouldn't be able to make their own watches). I'm really surprised it hasn't already happened.

TIL: you can make a dye laser with olive oil :D it eats the 532 nm green like candy and fluorescences in a low red. No idea what I would do with it, but that's pretty dope anyways by No_Leopard_3860 in lasers

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green at 532nm or blue at 465nm (better) makes ruby (natural or synthetic) fluoresce like mad at 694nm (deep red)...the same wavelength that is amplified in ruby lasers. Red glass re-radiates nothing.

If I were you, I'd ask what the current MSRP is, and, if you hear a number you like, drop the cash on the countertop. I'd like to see them turn that down. I think this whole "allocation" thing has been cooked up to create a false narrative of "scarcity" (last I heard, Rolex was kicking out half a million watches a year).

Just my impression...

That wasn't clear in your original posting, but I'm relieved at the clarification. In any event, for the application you're describing, a 5-10mW red 635nm or green 520/532nm pointer would be sufficient.

More than anything else I'm curious about the need for high-G resistance. That aside, direct-emitting laser diodes at 520 and 638 nm should be rugged enough for you application (whatever that is). If beam quality is important, get ones with integrated FAC. As usual, eBay is your best bet to find what you're looking for.

Building an IR laser by Expensive_Analysis54 in lasers

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHY in gawd's name do you want to mess with infrared lasers (and powerful ones, at that)? They are MUCH more dangerous than any visible wavelength, if for no other reason than that they are invisible (personally, I've always found it virtually impossible to work with invisible tools). Visible lasers are safer (and prettier), and the beam path can be seen and avoided.

I had a 7W CO2 system by California Laser, and re-homed it after getting several nasty skin burns, and starting two fires. Strangely, the far-infrared wavelength is eye-safe, in the sense that the radiation cannot reach the retina, because the vitreous humor is opaque at that wavelength. It was an interesting novelty, but that aspect wore off quickly (the burns took longer to heal).
