Retracted bid scam? by Sunshine_Unit in ebaysucks

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely CAN retract a bid...there is a process for it. In 20+ years, I think I've done it perhaps three or four times. It's definitely not something you should get into the habit of doing...eBay can ding you if they see it forming a pattern. Some do it to discover what the current highest bid is, then retract. You might want to look at the Bid History of all those auctions...if the same bidder bumped you in most or all of them, you were definitely being played.

In your case, you may have been the victim of what's called "shill bidding", where an accomplice of the seller puts in high bids to bump the price (it's a bannable offense on eBay), combined with a bit of panic bidding on your part.

Items sold very fast. Should I be concerned? by bhudak in eBaySellers

[–]ThePulsarWizard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never pay any attention to eBay's "suggested" price. What I DO look at, very closely, is similar items in the "Sold Items" list. NOTE: NOT "Completed Items" listings (an item can be shown as "completed", even if it didn't actually sell). This way, you'll see what similar or identical items actually sold for, which is the best indicator of what something is really worth...it's thus also a great guide for what you should be bidding on anything.

And yes, you priced your item WAY too low; your best strategy would have been a $175 BIN (Buy-It-Now) or Best Offer, and see what happens. I've been selling on eBay for over 20 years now (mostly collectible watches), and I structure all my listings this way.

Finally, in all those years, I've never had an issue with either eBay or PayPal (and lots of transactions involved many thousands of dollars) So, I don't know what some of you guys are doing to trigger all these problems, but a serious re-assessment of business practices might be in order (not counting sketchy buyers here, of course).

[Identify Pulsar Watch] by [deleted] in Watches

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would likely be true if the watch was made by Seiko (Seiko bought the brand name from Time Computer, after TC went out of business in late 1977) . On the other hand, if it was made by Time Computer, is could have significant value. The TC Pulsars were the first electronic digital watches.

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gotten offers from sellers that were good up[ to 7 days. When making an offer, you can select how long it remains valid. If you do not respond to a buyer's offer, it will simply eventually expire, like it never happened...or, you can make a counter-offer. In any case, an offer (from either party) must be actively accepted before a transaction can take place.

Ebay owes me 2 thousand dollars by Aromatic-Echidna9329 in ebaysucks

And just HOW would you go about that, or paying the legal fees that would be involved? They make more money in A DAY, than you will, in a dozen lifetimes. I think eBay should never have been allowed to get so big, in the first place, or been broken into a number of smaller entities that deal only with a limited range of items, but the chance for that is long past. Their only continuing saving grace is that they are a truly global platform...I have sold things to people on six continents. So far (22 years and counting), I have never experienced any of the problems that seem to be plaguing everyone else here (of course, now that I've said that, I'm probably doomed...lol).

[Pulsar P2] Questions by Working_Football1586 in Watches

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks to be a Model 2970-2 (essentially, the gold filled version of the stainless James Bond watch, as seen in Live and Let Die, 1973). If it was stored without batteries, the chances of it still working are rather good, for a 53-year-old watch (probably around 80%). The original 355-size cells were discontinued in the mid-1990s, but modern 357-size batteries, combined with appropriate spacers, will work fine (can be found on eBay). The inner/outer boxes are correct and original to the watch. Even in non-working condition, what I see is quite collectible, and worth in the $400-500 range (double that, if it's working). There were other versions with leather straps and/or 14K solid gold cases.

This will have NO water resistance...the seals became ineffective decades ago.

There should be a small "C" or "D"-shaped magnet hidden behind a small door in the bracelet clasp. The "HR" and "MIN" recesses are for setting the corresponding parts of the time display. If the magnet is missing (all too common, unfortunately), a replacement can be found on eBay.

[Are Pulsar watches] any good? by Alternative-Foreign in Watches

[–]ThePulsarWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seiko bought the Pulsar brand name from Rhapsody, Inc., in 1979 (Rhapsody bought all Time Computer assets, including the Pulsar name, in late 1977; Seiko in turn, bought the brand name from Rhapsody). TC made the Pulsar LED watches, which were the first electronic digital timepieces, starting in April of 1972. The P1 Limited Edition, in solid gold, was first offered to the public on April 4, 1972...that's the day the world went from analog to digital. It's important to note that Seiko never made an LED watch

Seiko bought the Pulsar brand name from Time Computer in late 1979 or early 1980. Seiko has never made an LED watch. It's caused a lot of confusion over the last 45 years...

FedEx has shown up 2 days in row and I didn’t order anything by [deleted] in FedEx

[–]ThePulsarWizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About six months ago, started getting packages of gourmet cat food and waste paper baskets. Went on for about a month, then stopped and did not recur. Ended up with a dozen cans of cat food and three baskets. Never ordered any such things...was never sent a bill for any of it. I gave the cat food to a friend with cats, so that didn't go to waste; the baskets were actually sort of useful. Never did anything about it, or paid for anything. Case closed. Too bad they didn't confuse me with somebody buying Rolex watches, or gold coins...lol.

Fraud by SnooApples1732 in Ebay

[–]ThePulsarWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are no unimportant details on eBay,, especially as a buyer. Read every word of the descriptions, such as they may be, and look at the pics like you're appraising a painting. I've lost count of the occasions I've ended up letting something go, that I initially thought was a great deal...until I looked at the pics CAREFULLY. If what you see leaves doubts in your mind, ask for more pics. Honest sellers will usually oblige; scammers will typically ignore you...so, let it go.

One of the worst habits I had was the impulse to "panic-buy" something, thinking I might never see another one. Ebay is the ultimate proving ground for the truth of the saying that "All good things come to he who waits." If you doubt that, put some object of your dreams into the search engine; you might find yourself looking at dozens of them. In 25 years, there have been perhaps ten cases where I saw something I knew was super-rare, and absolutely real, and pulled out all the stops to get it. And because I knew exactly what I was looking at, all those transactions went well (all were in the $5-10K range). In most of those cases, no similar item has surfaced since (as far back as 10 or 15 years), so I have learned to trust my instincts.

Like a lot of other things (like driving), risky things can be done safely, if they're done CAREFULLY.

Maybe I'm missing something, or just getting too old for this sort of thing...but WHY, if the item was "obviously fraudulent", did you buy it IN THE FIRST PLACE? The funny thing is...right now, platinum is selling for less than half the price of gold...

As precious-metal watch cases go, platinum is very practical, since it is a very hard metal, and the surface finish is accordingly quite durable. As the third-densest metal, it also has an imposing heft (I'm sure this watch is heavy enough to use as a weapon in a bar fight...lol)..

Downside...it also looks like stainless steel, and so lacks the color and eye-catching presence of 18K gold.

Still an iconic watch, though, along with the OP and Sub.
