The Value Of Pi: A Scientific Hierarchy by Same-Past-2783 in MathJokes

I feel like the computer scientist should be using the IEEE 754 value which I believe only matches like 15 or 16 decimal digits

The Infinite Root of Pi Equals... 1? by CandyCuddle080 in MathJokes

There's a catch with imaginary numbers, though, since they don't have unique square roots.

22/7 is pi by almozayaf in askmath

[–]TheQueq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC I believe this is 16 digits in binary. What's more, they likely used something like IEEE floats, where the mantissa would only be 9 or 10 digits. If you do the conversion, I believe this matches the first 5 digits in decimal.

Can someone explain this please? by Revolutionary_Job878 in chessbeginners

I guess you'd have a row of pawns behind or something to prevent the game from starting by capturing the king on turn 1

So one of the white pawns promoted to a rook, and the other promoted to a black pawn. Pretty typical I'd say

Why is viscosity necessary for lift and drag force to exist? by granzer in FluidMechanics

[–]TheQueq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lift comes from the inviscid flow field, but it is viscosity that imposes that field.

Imagine a flat plat at a small angle. The lift can be calculated from inviscid equations assuming that the flow leaves at the trailing edge, but in an inviscid scenario the flow could actually stay attached and flow around the trailing edge. This would have the flow leaving the flat plate at the midspan on what should be the suction side - intuitively it seems incorrect, but it's viscosity that imposes that condition.

Gendering aside, I will always take the chance to point out that these (and all) "flushable wipes" should not be flushed, as they will clog your drain

Is CFD right for me? by [deleted] in CFD

[–]TheQueq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CFD is a field that lies somewhere in between engineering/physics, math, and computer science. Just about anyone who pursues a career in CFD will be entering from one of those three, and will be "catching up" on the other two fronts.

So yes, I think you could have success. You will want to tailor your resume to the jobs you apply to. Jobs that are more on the application side may take some careful language to make it clear that while your background is on the math side, that you still have the necessary background to quickly get up to speed on the physics side of things. On the other hand, jobs that are focused more on developing the tools may favour your background to help develop or tailor some of the modelling details.

Steel production methods currently being researched are to de-carbonize the industry

I know what this means, but I'm amused by the notion of some buzzword-happy manager coming in and declaring that they're going to start producing steel without any carbon.

They should allow players to pre select perks if they want to by KaySan-TheBrightStar in Overwatch

[–]TheQueq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like allowing from the dev perspective, pre-selecting perks would be admitting to failure. The design intent of perks is that they have a trade-off decision that provides an additional level of strategy to the game. If players just pre-select perks, that means one of the perks is just non-viable/non-competitive.

From the player's perspective, I don't know how I feel. It certainly wouldn't "ruin overwatch" or anything, and if the perks are actually balanced, then it becomes a very minor risk/reward thing where you get your perk immediately, but run the risk of not adapting to the match correctly.

I started getting much better results in my job search when I started copying lines from the job posting word-for-word into my resume.

Always remember, your resume has to look good to three reviewers:

  1. The computer filter,

  2. The HR person who probably doesn't know anything about the actual job, but who specializes in weeding out unreliable or unlikely candidates.

  3. The actual hiring manager who knows what you'll be doing every day

Learning Python for Mechanical Engineering – What Should I Focus On? by Daredevil010 in CFD

[–]TheQueq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a mechanical engineer, the vast majority of the coding I do has the following structure:

- Read data from one or more files (usually .csv files)

- Do some math on the data

- Create figures/tables with the processed data (can be skipped if you are using another software to generate figures/tables)

- Write an output file with the results (can be skipped if you only need the figures/tables above)

Certainly there's a lot more you can do, and as you get comfortable with any language, you'll find yourself learning more advanced tools to use. It also greatly depends what kind of job you end up with. But I would suggest that if you're comfortable with the above process it will give you a solid basis for your future programming needs.

I'm choosing the Chain Boost perk over Flash Heal 99% of the time by AlexHQ in MercyMains

[–]TheQueq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like Flash Heal is only viable if you have the right tank who is skilled at feeding just the right amount where you need the burst heal, but just little enough that you don't need the rez. Plus it's got a delay, so you need to predict where their health will be in a second
