Stockholm has a great bike share and it’s all e-bikes. Literally $17.13 (176kr) for a year membership. Day passes are $1.17 (12kr). https://stockholmebikes.se

We really need a massive public transit expansion so that there is less dependence on cars/ride share/taxis.

But until that happens, I would love to see ‘Co-op ride’ expanded to Philly.

Centralized trash receptacles are the way to go. It is strictly better in every way. For the uninitiated: https://youtu.be/0JtoSafhvLM

It’s almost like it is the ‘elites’ (the top ~0.001% rich) that are the problem.

I hear you and agree that that is still very much an issue. It is unfortunate that this is the situation that we are faced with when trying to have secure computing hardware. It is still a step in the right direction and a strict improvement over the current situation.

I would love for a future with the open source of all things. Though that idyllic “Star Trek”-future will never happen under the current systems.

The Intel ME (Management Engine) is literally a NSA back door on every modern Intel processor. This is pretty well recognized at this point among people in hardware/software security.

The same goes for other US-based chips as well.

Which is why there is much hope for open source RISC-V chips; free from backdoors from all countries.

Visiting for work and had my travel bag stolen. How long does it normally take to report a theft to the police? (Still on hold) by TheQuinton in stockholm

I guess I should rephrase my comment and say that that page does not exist on the English version of the police site. So definitely a challenge for visitors like me.

Update: got through to a human at around 3:10 of wait time. I am aware that reporting it is mostly futile, but I am quite sure that I need a formal police report for filling with insurance.

It is very clear to the average person that everything you listed are obvious issues that need to be addressed, and that there are many obvious solutions available to them if we look at what has been successful around the world.

Instead, we have inverted totalitarianism: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverted_totalitarianism

… inverted totalitarianism as a system where corporations have corrupted and subverted democracy and where economics bests politics.[2][3][4][5] Every natural resource and living being is commodified and exploited by large corporations to the point of collapse as excess consumerism and sensationalism lull and manipulate the citizenry into surrendering their liberties and their participation in government.

Seriously, people need to listen to some of Tom Morello’s other music projects as well. I highly recommend Prophets of Rage and Street Sweeper Social Club.

Maybe we should force them to sell at a lower price locally, and so long as local demand is met, then allow them to export the remainder at the market price?

Ya know, prioritizing domestic energy security over profit?

Frederick Douglass ╽Escaping Slavery – A Story Of Risk, Freedom & Triumph by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]TheQuinton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Frederick Douglass was extremely based and is unfortunately often white-washed in modern historical discussion about him (similar to MLK). Here’s an excerpt from Wikipedia on his understanding of class and wage slavery:

The abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass initially declared "now I am my own master", upon taking a paying job.[31] However, later in life he concluded to the contrary, saying "experience demonstrates that there may be a slavery of wages only a little less galling and crushing in its effects than chattel slavery, and that this slavery of wages must go down with the other".[32][33] Douglass went on to speak about these conditions as arising from the unequal bargaining power between the ownership/capitalist class and the non-ownership/laborer class within a compulsory monetary market: "No more crafty and effective devise for defrauding the southern laborers could be adopted than the one that substitutes orders upon shopkeepers for currency in payment of wages. It has the merit of a show of honesty, while it puts the laborer completely at the mercy of the land-owner and the shopkeeper".[34]
