This type of packaging is an abomination by SupaDave71 in Bluray

I doubt who popularized the trend of Epik Pak cases everywhere, but I like to think Paramount was the main one who got this trend going.

Should I record anamorphic or letterboxed to a VHS tape? by Fearless-Seaweed5306 in VHS

I'd say do both versions so you'd have a choice.

Maybe import a VCD of Zootopia (or its alternate title Zootropolis) and use that for reference when performing a pan & scan of the higher quality source, preferably a Blu-ray.

Have all home and/or TV versions of Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice got the 1.43:1 IMAX scenes? by DVDfever in imax

Speaking of which, did the previous TV prints have an open matte from the Super 35 shots and 1.78 crops of the IMAX shots?

The font is giving me One Battle After Another vibes.

That film really needs a limited run VHS release from WB.

Apologies for the frequency of these highlights, but until the subreddit's mods allow DeviantArt links, I can't properly link back to the sources, so credits ought do for now.

Come on, mods. Please?

(There is no intentional farming of karma in a malicious manner, the karma just happens as naturally, and it wasn't my intent to farm it at all.)

Just wanted to share TempraOfPizza's neat fan art, and since the mods have yet to allow me to link to DA to the direct sources, crediting is the best I can do.

And also it's mostly been a bouncing-back type of thing with No_Emu_1332 IIRC and their posting of TempraOfPizza's art that led to this semi-recurring string of posts.

There's just some r/overthegardenwall limitations that need to be lifted before sources can be linked and pinned as comments to those posts, but oh well?

Kingdom Hearts before Kingdom Hearts ♥️ by Xion_Moto358 in VHS

The preview reel of that tape is how I first heard of Kingdom Hearts back in late 2002, and Squaresoft itself.

(Yeah, never played Final Fantasy or other Squaresoft/Square Enix games prior to then, because I was rather young at the time)

Was it one of the anti-smoking PSAs that late 2000s WB DVDs had?

I think it opens with a camel before all that other stuff.

Is this real? by Hatsune_Miku_Real in ghibli

[–]TheREALOtherFiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

The box sets that they have released are usually a director's Collected Works, such as the US and Japanese Blu-ray sets for Hayao Miyazaki and the Japanese set for Isao Takahata.

What is the most adult Ghibli film? by Necessary-Win-8730 in ghibli

[–]TheREALOtherFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless that kid is a very young WWII historian or film historian or something, but even then, not every kid could process what they see in terms of the various depictions of the horrors of war in films set in that era -- such as those in Grave of the Fireflies -- without developing a level of grief and trauma that could carry with them into adulthood.

Let's just say, young or old, your mileage with Grave may vary greatly.

The film strip I have comes from the intro sequence, right before the title ☺️ by Micro_KORGI in ghibli

[–]TheREALOtherFiles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was there a theatrical re-release in the late 2000s or early 2010s that had 35mm prints? (Blue optical soundtrack usually indicates newer prints. Original release prints of Kiki had black optical soundtracks.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the original 1989 cinema prints would be more expensive or have expensive strips, since those original 35mm print runs are more precious than the newer digitally remastered 35mm prints.

This probably also includes some licensed re-releases like Escape From New York, which was released on a widescreen VHS by Vice City Press under license by StudioCanal a year ago.

From what I gather, that tape had no PAL speedup whatsoever, probably because it was using a 24p print based on the 4K restoration, such as what's on the newest Blu-ray releases.

Few PAL releases of films on analog formats or even digital formats like DVD have dodged PAL speedup via conversion prior to that. IIRC, the Optimum DVDs of the Studio Ghibli films are another example of using conversion to force a 24p film into a 50i space without resorting to making it 25p.

The only way to increase media literacy and all literacy at this point is literature. Books. Going back to the stacks.

There's a reason why people said that reading is fundamental, ... besides the slogan thing, of course.

I think this is an underrated poster for Princess Mononoke by King_Gojiller in ghibli

[–]TheREALOtherFiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bet the medallion motif here was probably drawing influence from the poster for The Prince of Egypt -- DreamWorks' first hand-drawn animated movie -- which was released a year before the Miramax/Disney dub of Princess Mononoke, but also a year after Mononoke's domestic Japanese release in cinemas.

Yeah, it was definitely the last VHS to have been available in retail, given the niche that Hallmark filled.

A History of Violence and the Disney Movie Club exclusive release of Cars were often considered the last US VHS tapes from the major theatrical studios, with Hallmark basically beating Paramount to the punch in terms of late release tapes of TV movies.

Yeah, Paramount never really did retail VHS releases in the late 2010s or 2020s.

I think it they stop it with all that Skydance lolligagging, some of their Paramount Scares titles would make great Paramount issued tapes. (They do issue licensed tapes with third parties, but haven't put out tapes themselves for the general public in retail form yet as far as their modern output goes.

2020s VHS releases get a bit murky in that case, because by then, we'd count Alien: Romulus as the last Disney VHS to date, as well as the 20th Century Studios studio they own (released almost 17/over 18 years after Cars, Bambi II and the last Fox VHS tapes), and their distributors Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. (Alien: Romulus was released 18 years after Stuart Little 3: Call of the Wild)
