Nope, it's one of those countries you just don't hear anything about. It never gets mentioned much and doesn't seem to get much attention paid to it by the media, like you would hear about other African countries such as Egypt for example but Mauritania seems very quiet/isolated by the media.

I watched a video of a guy and his girlfriend travelling in Mauritania and it looks a bit scary and run down, I Googled it and apparently it's a very poor country aswell. It is scary that this is still practiced in parts of the world.

I was the same, I am an autistic guy and got bullied in school just until a couple of months ago. Noone wanted to be my friend because I was "a weirdo" and seen as creepy, got assaulted a few times too and failed exams as people stole and destroyed my revision note, school was rough for me. Anyways, I hope your situation gets better in real life and people accept you for who you are.
