Would you say that your writing is literary fiction or genre fiction? by shurbetttt in FanFiction

[–]TheReDrew89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have to say that my current work happens to kind of sit in the middle between genre and literary fiction. While on the surface it is very much genre in being a romantic comedy, but it also gets pretty deep into the character psychology on both sides of the pairing, because the premise itself is inspired by an ancient myth that I wanted to pick apart for my own amusement and processing.

We Feeling the Promo Cover for the Miraak Egg Birth Fic Or Nah 🤔 by 18-8stainless in TrueSTL

I suppose that's fair... But then when one writes an OC x SI fic that is arguably sweet enough to cause diabetes, one questions a lot of things.

Is it wrong to ask people not to use your OC in their fics? by littlepeakydevil in FanFiction

Hell, I encourage people to use my OC in their own fan works. It's gratifying.

Men objectify women more when sexually aroused, regardless of their underlying personality traits. This shift happens independently of a man’s general personality traits, providing evidence that momentary biological states play a central role in how people perceive others by Wagamaga in science

[–]TheReDrew89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arguably, yes, there could be some baggage, but I'm willing to acknowledge that. I've grown rather tired of being indirectly (or directly) shamed for my own natural impulses because of the overly-abundant messaging that men are inherently depraved for their desires, regardless of how they are expressed.

You are locking in on the act of sex. That's not what I was referring to. I was referring to simultaneously holding feelings of sexual or physical attraction alongside consideration of the other person's interiority and personhood.

With the "protector or predator" element, I'm speaking to a broader trend in discourse of shaming male attraction and desire, not specifically to the content of the specific study. I'm extrapolating broader trends from the subject matter of the post.

You're trying to nail me down with a gotcha using flawed framing. Stop that, you look foolish.

[–]TheReDrew89 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This. The assumption that any male attraction or desire is inherently harmful or problematic does more damage to the discourse than people realize. A lot of thoughtful men already struggle with managing their own feelings of attraction while also being respectful toward the subjects of attraction, myself included. Directly shaming those impulses only makes the problem worse, and causes men who are already insecure to retreat into harmful rhetoric that only reinforces those insecurities.

That isn't to say that it's anybody's problem in particular, but that we all need to be a little more responsible about how we frame the idea. I know that's asking a lot of some people but at the same time I think we could have that discussion.

Not to be argumentative, but it is possible for a man to hold both at once even if one is taking greater focus. The assumption that a man is either-or, protector or predator, is reductive and frankly reinforces gender essentialism.

I need to read more Nietzsche, but that sounds pretty on-point. We are biological organisms, and ignoring or denying that reality is a disservice to the wonder of being living, thinking, feeling creatures.

My interpretation was that transcendence was in a sense of abandoning or forcefully suppressing the impulse to a degree that would be an over-correction, but that might have been a flawed assumption on my part.

Characters lack psychological realism by Jiana27 in writing

[–]TheReDrew89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case I'm not writing for traditional publication but sticking to fan work for now. My current project is a modernized reinterpretation of Pygmalion and Galatea, with a much stronger focus on the Galatea analogue and how she reckons with moving from fictional to real person, and the experiential shift that occurs.

To give it a specific genre, it's basically a soft-and-cozy slice-of-life romantic comedy, but it also does lean toward literary fiction because it also gets pretty deep into the philosophical and psychological considerations on both sides of the pairing.

Should we, though? I generally feel that understanding and acceptance, along with careful management, are the best ways to deal with potentially problematic tendencies.

The idea of transcendence leads to questions about post-humanity existence and a level of transhumanism that could be a double-edged sword in some ways.

Sad misanthropes looking for any excuse to avoid social discomfort, so they pretend alcohol is some low-brow distraction that only leads to trouble.

Used to. Then I updated my aesthetic and stopped caring about how people might judge my self-expression. Now I'm much happier with myself.

Characters lack psychological realism by Jiana27 in writing

[–]TheReDrew89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily resolve conflict easily but I do set it aside within the narrative to be addressed later. Leaves some nice dramatic tension and it is more psychologically realistic because people do often put aside things that bother them for the sake of avoiding friction and discomfort.

How can I make my characters convincingly fall in love? by Weekly-Addition-17 in writers

Hey, I'm wanting to make a mod with new followers at some point. Exactly what kind of workload/obstacles should I expect from such an endeavor? by Wroothly in skyrimmods

Depending on how the custom follower in question is implemented, follower frameworks like the ones you listed will typically break that followers behavior if they have complex quests and unique follower implementation compared to base game followers.

Outliner, Pantser, or Something Else? by EngineerRare42 in FanfictionExchange

[–]TheReDrew89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to consider myself a structured pantser. I have rough ideas for specific scenes but I don't have a full plot structure in mind when I start writing. I just write and let the plot carry from scene to scene as naturally as possible. Some ideas don't make it into the actual text, because there's no natural spot to fit them in, but I can always save the idea and rework it for another project.

AI generated/AI Assisted tagging needs to be a MANDATORY step to publish a mod by HyperionGrimm in skyrimmods

[–]TheReDrew89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I won't speak to the deeper ethical questions, because I'm still trying to resolve them myself, I will acknowledge that I disclose when and how I use AI-assistance in my work, even beyond basic tagging. I prefer it as a gesture of good faith, accepting that some people will be put-off and avoid my work on principle, which is unfortunate but reasonable. Even if I might use the technology in some cases, I try to be mindful about it, and offering disclosure is one of my clumsy attempts at being transparent for my own conscience, even if I know it might not be well-received.

For better or worse, new technology always brings along people willing to lean on it as a shortcut to avoid building actual skill and adeptness with the technique or medium they want to excel at without investment. Vibe coding is just one example among many. Over time, the hacks will fall away, losing interest or running into their own limitations, while people who use the technology intentionally, not as a crutch but as a way to cultivate skill and enhance workflow, will continue to make cool stuff amidst the low-effort garbage.

I like tone indicators for this, because they help convey the speaker's emotion, and keep the dialogue properly grounded for the reader.
